Nokia C7 review: Rise and shine

03 November 2010
The Nokia C7 has no intention of breaking the chain of command. It is just a slimmer, simpler and more affordable N8 and comes with more conservative styling. The well-balanced Cseries have received an accomplished leader. The specs sound cool...

"Here's a demo video of Symbian ^3 running on the Nokia C7." Your demo videos are always slightly sped up, which makes the phones look more responsive than they really are.

Tim, 10 Nov 2010You know, call me weird but I really prefer the resistive t... moreI can totally relate - having grown up with resistive screens I've come to expect precision, which you just don't get with capacitive. (old man voice) these young folk nowadays...(/old man voice) they're all used to capacitive from not just iProducts but touch-screens in shopping centres and at other public terminals as well.

Anecdote in point: the music browsing/playing software on iPhone and N97 Mini are pretty comparable - pick your category (album, artist, whatever) and then browse a long list to get to what you want. Both can be easily plugged into a car stereo vie 3.5 mm jack, and it's fun to give someone else control while you drive.

My sister was accustomed to capacitive, so she was confused at the "unresponsive" N97 screen. I am used to capacitive, so in her car at first I was not amused by the lack of response from the iPhone's screen. I'm a massive nerd, though, so I realised my mistake and started using my fingertip.

Unfortunately, capacitive is just the way it's going to be for such devices thanks to both market demand and some inherent advantages of the tech. It's not all bad, but I will miss the precision and flexibility of resistive. Being able to poke at the screen with a chopstick or use it while wearing gloves FTW! :--D

You know, call me weird but I really prefer the resistive touch-screen of the 5800, etc. The tip-of-a-fingernail precision is so much better than the fat-fingertip press-and-pray on an iPhone or similar.

I think Nokia's problem was that they never explained this to people. iPhone users tried a 5800, and because the touchscreen didn't work exactly the same as their phone they assumed it was borken, and Nokia never bothered to correct them.

I tried a C7 in a carphone warehouse today, and the interface isn't that much slicker. The multi-touch seems to be a cludgy partial implementation (doesn't work in maps), and the capacitive touchscreen is so imprecise compared to my old 5800. I'm saving myself 50 pounds and getting the same again.

I've been doing alot of reading on symbian 3 and competing platforms. It is really sad to see nokia so far behind the competition in terms of web browsing, media handling, ui usability and eye candy. Also why does it take them so long to catch up? It seems to me that the people in charge there are a bit isolated from the competition!?!?! Also why so slow at bringing their products to market? I live in Athens Greece and nobody has either seen or heard of their new symbian 3 devices... HTC and Samsung devices are already here...

Hey GsmArena, someone on facebook compared C7 vs N8 and ask nokia which is better and they replied C7 screen is better than N8 cause it has a ClearBlack display so i asked Nokia on the offical Nokia(Singapore) facebook page, about the ClearBlack display and they've confirmed that the Nokia C7 DOES actually have a ClearBlack display.. The link they gave me- http://www.oled-display.net/nokia-e7-and-c6-01-with-clearback-amoled-display =)

You really should know what you are talking about before trolling. For example in customization there is a gap just as big between Symbian and Android as there is between Android and iOS. When you have compared the basics, how about googling for something like SPB Shell.

Played with C7 in a shop. Looks like S^3 is a bit slower compared to my 5800 with v51. If the lag is on purpose they better fix this with the next FW update.

It is interesting how newer, but lower-grade phones have odd little features that their big brothers don't get. One cool example of this is all the little touches in the X5-01 like spin-to-shuffle and the message-count beeper.

                                  I love this tech!

I have Nokia 5235. Fortunately I found PowerMP3 (a freeware) which can play music folder-wise. Thus Problem-1 is solved. For Problem-2, I got LCG Photobook which allows to view photos folder-wise and shows photos in folders with thumbnails also. Unfortunately it is a demo version. After 14 days, it is to be bought for extended use. So Problem-2 remains unsolved. Nokia 5235 has another drawback too. We cannot view Contact Numbers along with Names. Only names are shown. We have to click on a name and choose 'edit' to view the contact numbers. Nokia 2700 can do all these things, (folder-wise)but it is a cheap phone, LCD size is very small, and there is no touch etc... Cheaper phones have many options which high end ones lack. I don't why they do it. It is the legendary donkey and the grass on a stick.

Noway, 05 Nov 2010Heu...if you try an Iphone, Android, Win7, and then a Symbi... moreI have tried Android and iPhone. Have you tried Symbian3?

And yes you are right, the iPhone experience was pretty much "what the hell, others did this right ten years ago!" Simple things like trying trying to transfer files to your phone or setting an mp3 as a ringtone were absolutely terrible experience and you can't customize anything.

Android is OK, I could definitely live with it, but it is still pretty inefficient and fragmented. For example games like NFS Shift that are available to all platforms run well on N8 and iPhone but are less smooth and look worse on Android devices.
