Got this phone a week ago. I simply love it. Very smooth. Great out of the box. So far, I only downloaded three apps: Angry Birds, Shazam and Ultimate Poker Timer. Everything else I need (social nets and web browsing) the included apps are more than adequate.
I do not have any problems with the loosness of the hinge. I can see that it may be a problem if you use the QWERTY while lying on your back. That is the only drawback I can see. The QWERTY is designed well with commonly used punctuation marks (@,. and ?) having their own keys.
Battery life will be an issue. I am an extremely heavy user. I need to charge it up part way through the day. Since this is my first week of owning this phone, I am using it more than normal as I am tying out a lot of things. Of course, having downloaded Angry Birds doesn't help. That game is really addicting.
There are a few annoying things. The lack of folders in the browser and the inability to rearrange items in home screen folders are the main things.
Overall, I really love this phone. Note, that I was an N97 user before any almost anything would be a great improvement.

HTC Desire Z is a weak phone considering what kind of muscle is in competitor's QWERTY devices.

The phone seems great. My only concern is GSMArena is too generous in quoting battery life of droids. They said Galaxy S and Desire ran for a day and half, but reality is 7-8 hours of battery life on 3G network (12-14 hrs on a 2G network). If the battery of HTC Desire with a 1400mAH of battery is so pathetic, how will this perform with only 1300mAH battery. Droids are definitely a leap ahead in mobile evolution, but batteries dont seem to support them. For me a phone is only as good as the battery since i am a very heavy user.
For an expectedly poor battery life, average screen, and a completely outdated camera i suppose there are much better handsets than Desire Z (the Desire line up infact). The only plus is Android with Sense UI which work like a charm together and extremely enjoyable to use.
