Bluetooth 3.0 and Wireless N speed test: Something in the air

You see Wireless N and Bluetooth 3.0 slowly creeping on the cellphone specs pages and it was about time we do a dedicated test of how good they are in reality. Every geek loves to get the latest and greatest in mobile tech...

web results are not surprising
given the compact files being transferred you're more likely suffering from latency than throughput (that is, the overhead time of requesting and receiving a 1 byte file)
especially true given it's all just radio waves all travelling at the same speed
the difference really between the standards is just the number, size and correctness of 'data packets' being transmitted
by the look of it n300 has more overhead than n130

the iphone4 large file download results look a little suspicous though
0% improvement of n130 over g:
- did the iphone not switch to g?
- did the iphone not switch to n?
- is the iphone selecting what it thinks the best connection would be given the signal quality? (which would help explain the 'far' results showing little improvement)
... i think it needs more looking in to

802.11 a/n use the 5ghz spectrum

that is, n makes use of both frequencies

Anonymous, 30 Dec 2010The article forgot to mention that these phones run in only 2.4g... moreIs it not right that 802.11 b/g/n all run in the 2.4Ghz spectrum and 802.11a runs in the 5Ghz spectrum (at 54Mbps the same as 802.11g (802.11b runs at 11Mbps))? So to run in the 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz spectrums it would have to be 802.11 a/b/g/n as would your router.

correction needed:
Test #2 graphic - n130 over n300
i'm pretty sure that should read as n300 over n130
(as it is in the previous test)

the notes underneath say:
- n130 8% slower than g
- n300 30% slower than g
if that's true, its impossible for n130 to be 20% slower than n300

i think your missing a point here...when i'm using my old bluetooth headset to my 3gs iphone before it only covers a few feet away from my iphone but when i use the bluetooth from my galaxyS it will cover at least 3x the distance now..it's the same headset by the way...

The article forgot to mention that these phones run in only 2.4ghz spectrum not the less congested 5ghz.

I hope that smartphones would both support spectrum.

ABT, 29 Dec 2010Great work mates!!loved this article. fantastic. Nothing like a test results from a Lab tests to quite those who prefer rhetoric. I am somewhat suprised by the results as my perception is that wireless N makes all the difference in transforming a wireless experience from "dial up like" to "DSL like". I'm curious how some netbooks would perform at this same test.
