Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc preview: First look

10 January 2011
Sony Ericsson is back at it and they are pushing pedal to the metal with their latest unusually curved and unusually streamlined sports car – the XPERIA Arc. Once one of the top three phone manufacturers, Sony Ericsson has been through some hard times, but the company underwent a painful restructuring and it found a way to make its handsets desirable again...

is the difference btwn IPS or AMOLED screens THAT big of a problem?

the screen resolution really makes very little difference **unless you do side-by-side comparison** (And a few bragging rights)

Its like complaining about the lack of 3D in your home television, when its completely unnecessary. All flagship screens are GORGEOUS. Look at HTC DHD.

I think that with their design SE should release WP7 device ASAP, this is one of the nicest devices I have seen recently and believe me I have seen many of them.
With this kind of design language they would sale many wp7 and eventhough I'm not a fan of android this device speaks to me and I'm really thinking about buying it when it becomes available.

How can a flagship phone being made of plastic ?

UI is also laggy despite its 1ghz processor. Exmor are sensors also are not good enough at low light as much as sony tells and at daylight they process unnatural colors.

i will go for moto atrix or some other tegra2 phone.

Sony has its own software for pic processing. Samsung is almost 10x larger than sony in terms of capital and profit. This phone will fail since headphone jack is at the side!!

Anonymous, 12 Jan 2011you talk rubbi*h. Camera on HD is among the worst 8mp pho... moreThe camera on DHD is quite good. A picture taken with it is worthy of being in a 30x24 frame on my wall along with pictures taken by my DSLR. If you or gsmarena's reviewer don't understand anything about digital photography and the solutions to the effects it has over the real image, that's not really HTC's problem.
I suppose by 'lighter' you mean 'cheap plastic', because once you've held alluminum body phone you will never look back to the girly plastic toy-phones. And what's better about the display? the viewing angle? Like you will ever look at your phone that way. The efficiency is important as long as it saves you enough power to last a day. There is no reason why you won't charge your phone overnight (I usualy have ~40% by the time I go to bed). Wanna bet if I will get Gingerbread before the Ark is out? If HTC doesn't provide (and they will), the community will provide it. And community support is the most important thing about a phone you intend to keep for over a year. The UI looks laggy (that plus cheap plastic sounds a lot like SGS, but it's SE this time) in the video and has 5 vs. 7 homescreens for HTC Sense. I don't know if you are familiar with Sense, but it offers much more than just a skin for the phone.
About not being a flagship. We will see when SE will release their supposed flagship. Judging from the X10 experience it will be longer than expected ;)

Camera on HD is among the worst 8mp phone cameras ever made and falls short even compared to many 5mp ones.

Now what the Arc has over HD:
                          Light body.
Real camera, in both video and still mode.
                          Much better display.
Far more efficient display. (said to be 25 more efficient than even the SAMOLED)
                          Android 2.3
New UI which so far receives only praises and is said to be better than sense.

As you can see, SE actually made a huge leap in their game and will provide most up to date android/multi media experience and usability.

And oh, Arc is NOT a flagship.
That role will be given to the xperia NEO, dual core 12mpix beast to be introduced in a month.

                          HTC?
They failed to make the supposed successor better than the now over a year old Desire!
Just check some reviews and expert opinions.

One of the main gripes people had with the X10 when it first came out was the call volume. I know smart phones are all competing on the tech stuff they can pull off but it's enfuriating having to listen so carefully to conversation on a poor phone. Has anyone managed to place a call using one of these yet or will we just have to wait for it to come out (& probably fail). On a similar note is there any signal loss issues as seen on the iphone 4? I doubt any company would be daft enough to repeat that farce but with SE you kind of never know......

This phone seems to repeat the X10 failure, it will be the slowest than the competitors. The old X10 wins only in design and camera, this Arc will be the same. Unless if the price is around $250-300 which is impossible. Im waiting for the Xperia Duo Pro though

i hope that gsmarena will pit its great camera against nokia n86 (latest firmware) whose phone has a wide-angle variable aperture lens. the point is to compare between two camera with both aperture size (f2.4) but with different type (exmor-r sensor vs. variable aperture). then also to other great 8 mp camera phones like nokia c7 and c6-01 (with reduced sharpness), samsung i8510 innov8, and sony ericsson's very own xperia x10 and aino.

why is everybody is bashing this phone because of not having a dual-core processor, it doesn't matter shit haahaha ik work in electronics store. and i sell the toshiba folio wich has the same chipset as that lg phone and it is not faster then the galaxy tab im also selling so my conclusion, it doesn't matter shit even netbook running windows has enough power running on a single core atom processor.
and the thing still dont understand from the other companies is why their phone are so damn ugly and their ui skin so boring and cheap (on the korean phones) it's like buying a kia or hyundai with more power while you can have a choice of buying a less powerfull but much nicer looking volvo, same as in this situation are u actually gonna use all of that theoratical extra power?
