Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play review: Bring your 'A' game

20 April 2011
With video gaming a sport in its own right, smartphones have no other choice but raise their game too. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play has strong ties to Sony’s gaming rigs, both portable and not, and Sony’s a big name...

Dual-core or not...the Xperia Play is one good-looking, great Android phone.

    Totally Fair Review, Loved it.
I agree SE should have put a better camera and also they should fill up the store with more and more titles.

bad phone better to buy experia arc at 657$ rather than spending 870$ on this brick.... better to go for a smartphone not a bulky gadget...

AnonD-252, 20 Apr 2011Many games installed on only 400 mb internal memory? 512 mb ram?I'm pretty sure games install on memory card since you have apps2sd support in >=2.2.

One thing you have failed to mention is the questionable legality of the PSX4Droid emulator. Emulators themselves are totally legal, it's how you get the BIOS file, as well as the games to play on it which is a bit of a grey area. And yes, while you aren't explicitly promoting the use of the emulator, I do think you should add something to the effect of "we do not endorse illegal activities" to that part of the review.

I havent managed to get psx4droid running on Xperia Play but fpse is working (and still on the marketplace, strangely). Would be interested to know which build of psx4droid was used in the review. There are serveral more PS1 games available but they are tucked away in the menus and are not easy to locate and purchase, which is a shame as these are the better games. I bought Syphon Filter for £3 and it plays great, much beter than in the emulators. Medievil, Cool Boarders 2, and Destruction Derby are also available legitimiately but I think Sony need to poulate this area faster, before they lose sales to the emulators.

Anyone any idea when PS2 games might arrive on the handset?

All in all, very pleased with this phone. Chose it because it offered something a bit differnt in a market dominated by the same old touchscreens.

why do ppl always review with psx4droid .. its a crap emulator for ps1 ... fpse is much faster and better plays just about all games inc metal gear on the xperia at solid fps .. so if your into emulation and stuff like that its an awesome device

Another excellent and balanced review from GSMArena - got to love them...
                      Now then...
This phone, and I think the review nailed it on the head here...
It's not about the specs it's about the games..
And for me - not even the PS1 games, but the emulators (Frodo 64, Nesoid, Gensoid, etc.)
You know, I'll be upgrading from my Galaxy S - and yes G2 is fab but with the touch screen it makes the above games unplayable..
And as Android is still sorely lacking in decent apps vs iphone apps.. this for me might just fit the bill...
A nice 12 month contract playing games, by next year hopefully Play2!
The UI seems fluid enough and you could always you ADW or SPB 3D to speed things up!
And I have to say the white play looks really nice - will turn heads - doesn't look like a generic smartphone...
I'm 75% sure I'm going to give this a whirl!

it's a portable gaming device just like PSP, PSP Go and and Nintendo DSi. The difference is that it can make phonecalls and do anything a smartphone can do. That's enough for me. You don't need a dual core processor for that.
Seriously, why would mobile phones need dual core processing? I think that mobile devices should be energy efficient instead.
And what's with GSMArena complaining about the size? I've seen wider phones than this (Samsung Galaxy SII is 125mm x 66mm despite the thin body) and GSMArena didn't harshly judge on them.
It's a damn good gadget i say, and i will buy one if only i have the money to spend :P.

                          Cheers :)

Secondary video call camera does'nt work over 3G for video calls in this phone and androids.

so late sony...but still will get attention of many especially those who like games on thier phone...proper support and pricing and this may start a new era on android...like it but hope price goes down...also not sure if spec can handle future games that will be released on android with the unreal engine...

mark, 20 Apr 2011well its not all that. if they brought out years ago when o... morehmmmm "laggy and slow" ehh....where are you getting this from exactly? Have you actually used the phones or watched the videos? In all the videos I've looked at so far it's been pretty smooth. Unless you mean slow compared to dual core processors, then that's a whole different issue...
