Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II review: Brightest star

13 May 2011
It looks like the point where it all ends. A galaxy outgrowing its own limits. An explosion of energy and speed. An overdose of smartphone power. A phone that makes you love the smell of Android in the morning. The likes of Samsung I9100. Update: Samsung Dive overview added...

But you are kind of exagerating...do you know how much a car battery lasts? Less than a couple of hours. The car alternator continuosly charges the battery while using the car...actually you use the car battery only when starting the car and when you use the lights, radio etc...without having the engine started... While running, the car uses the electricity generated by the alternator.

I would definetly choose a single core android (a good single core :P) with a really good battery life over a dual core one.

John Doe, 17 May 2011Bro u need a reality check. Calling iPhone fashionable. ... moreI don't think I need a reality check, but you sure need to read better.
I didn't said that Symbian is still competitive, nor that it offer better usability than iOS or Android, I think you should read again my last line.
The only reason that iPhone still sells a lot is because it's a fashionable device, because it's from Apple and because Steve Jobs says it's amazingly remarkable. Reality distortion field much? Get real man, people only still buy iPhones because they don't know what other devices has to offer, most of them only buy because of the name, anyone who want a device to be useful, without stupid restrictions and not only a pretty toy, will look for other brands.

Lol I didn't "generalize" anything. I never said that most people rather phones like N8 than iOS or Android phones, could you please point me the line that I supposedly said that? :)

just me, 17 May 2011with that point of view, guess you wont be having a phone a... morei dont ask 1650 to last for 4-5 days. what is required is a battery of 3500mah or so. 3500mAh battery obvously would be bigger hence the phone would be thicke. where is the problem???
they are so eager to create the worls thinest smartphone it doesn make sense. why dont create the worlds longest lasting smartphone in therms of battery life.
u r right new phones must do much more rather than only calling and texting. but thats not an excucse. have u seen how huge is S2 ??? its enormous. if it was 9,49 instead of 8,49 mm they could fill in that space with an extra batt.
i speachless how stupid those producers can be.
and i dont get your point about going home and having a rest!!! if u r having a rest does it automatically means the phone has to have a rest in terms of being charged??? then we can apply this to anything - to the car battery (imagine charging it every night beceuse our presious needs a rest and tender, love and care). this sucks.
i dont see any excuses for the smartphones to last barely a day or barely 2 days in case of s2 (and thats not a heavy usage)

marat, 17 May 2011samsung has made ALMOST an excellent phone. ALMOST. i dont ... morewith that point of view, guess you wont be having a phone anytime soon coz thats just plain wishful thinking. I mean, to ask for 4-5days battery life under heavy usage is just too much. For me, a standard day's use is acceptable. It's already a bonus to have 2 days use and most reviews of SGS did say its battery is better than most smartphones, even last 2 days. Afterall, most of us do go home to take some rest, phones do too, they need to recharge. Point is we want our phones to do so much more than what a phone used to do (call and text), now we expect it to surf as fast as possible, play games, watch movies, etc, i think its just fair that the batteries are draining so fast, but i agree it shd not go below a day's use cause most of us dont carry chargers. I dont think it being thin has anything to do with battery (not sure though), but they did do address the battery issue of original sgs and wave. so its an upgrade.

Smartphones are supposed to be power hungry because they are SMART.

Calling iPhone fashionable. Comeon Apple is the single force dat destroyed Nokia's dominance. If symbian was so great, then people would have always bought it more than any other brands. Its all about competition and Nokia has failed miserably, despite their size.

Bottom line is Nokia is out of competition now and along with it, also Symbian. The fight of the smartphones is now between Android and iOS. Please dont try to include Nokia into this fight. They are already gone and knocked out of the game.

Also dont generalize ur preference. U maybe happy with Nokia N8 but there are other tons of people who are happier on iOS and Android.

There is one thing with these charts which makes me feel that someone wanted very badly to show at least one big advantage of LG optimus 2x. If you look at all benchmarks where Galaxy S II wins, score bars are proportional because are drown from point 0. But on games benchmark it is drown from value 2000 and from bars length it looks like LG is almost 3 times faster, but really it is only 2528 to 2260. So normally drown these bars would be much similar. I find it really dishonest.

pkchi, 17 May 2011It's because I've been using Nokia since the 6630 and my fi... moreIf you been programing to Android, I think you should check out how this OS consumes battery and processing power monstrously because it's UI runs over Java, while on Symbian everything works natively. Every OS has it drawbacks and you are just like any other Android user that thinks that their OS is perfect.

The browser is slow not because the lack of a lot of RAM and CPU (RAM has nothing to do with browsing speed), it's because it still a bad conversion from the S60v3 browser to touch. Yyou should check out Opera Mobile or take a look how even an iPhone 3GS runs the web smoothly.

And I still don't get it what's the point from "10 years old UI", MUCH has changed since then and that's such a generic argument that every Symbian hater uses.

Also, I'm sure that most N8 users are very happy with their phone and don't find it a "useless fasion" like you, Nokia phones are well known for have great hardware functionality and there's almost nothing that GSII do that N8 can't. N8 has even a FM Transmitter and Pentaband 3G just in case someone needs it. So don't dare call N8 useless and fashionable like it was some kind of toy. "Useless and fashionable" applies much better to iPhone.

Oh, and don't get me wrong, I don't want by no means convince that Symbian is perfect or that it offers the same amount of usability as Android, obviously it's a immature OS for the touch era, it's just that I can't accept people saying nonsense thing when they are trying to bash it.

samsung has made ALMOST an excellent phone. ALMOST. i dont get why they are so obsessed with getting it so thin. ????? WHY???? has anybody from u hear ever complaints about smartphones being thick??? i've never heard such complaints. what is the only BIG COMPLAINT u can hear all the time about smartphones? is it that its too thick??? no, all smartphones suck because of battery life. those smartasses in samsung were so clever to create the worlds thinest smartphone but WHY ???? why did not they dedicate some extra 2mm for the battery??? some extra 2mm would at least triplle the size of miseralbe 1650mah battery and would triple the gaps between charging.
has any body heard complaints about smartphones being too heavy??? i have not. so some extra 20-30 grams would make a difference.
i had HTC desire and soldi it shortly after i got it. why? batery life. its miserable. all the time hassle with the charging. u forget accidnetly to charge it and when u have to leave the house u discover its 20% left and u know already it wont last all night. MISERABLE.
and SAMSUNG turns slowly into S%ITSUNG.
WHY?????????? the perfect smartphone is ALMOST THERE!!!! but why r they so sstupid and ignore complaints about battery life!!!
i've read so many reports about so many smartphones. one has problem with this the other phone has a problem with that. different proplems for diffferent phones. BUT. one thing is in common - BATTERY LIFE.
WTF !!! have i ever had a dream to hold a smartphone which is only 8,49 mm thick??? no - after htc desire i understood i wont buy any smartphones doesnt matter what super pupper amoled plus screens they have doesn matter what dual or quattro processors they hold.
i will buy only if all these features are combinded with battery life of 4-5 days under heavy usage. HEAVEY USAGE.
SAMSUNG just missed their chance to cash in my 500 pound. stupidd arsholes.
I invite people to vote - who wants to have the worlds thinest smatphone and who wants to exchange 8,49 mm to trpple size battery which means a bit of extra weight and etra 2mm.

AnonD-1082, 16 May 2011How dare you abandon Nokia for this phone? You should have ... moreIt's because I've been using Nokia since the 6630 and my fiance the 6600. Back then, it was like one of the top smart phones with office and pdf capabilities. Also had great third party app support. Ten years later, the OS UI still hasn't change, browser is slow (due to CPU and lack of ram) and all the 3rd party developers have ditched it. The last great overall phone from Nokia was the N95 8gb (dual arm and hw graphic accelerator).

I've some experience programming in both Symbian and Android also, and Using Symbian language and memory management instructions is like working for Hitler. Symbian has very poor OS memory management, so all apps have to clean it's own memory usage, so if an app developer forgot to clean the ram or it crashes on some instructions, you'll end up with lost memory and get the notorious out of memory message.

Lack of app support, memory management, ten year old UI, and cpu/ram made me switch to Android. The only thing I miss is Nokia name brand, fashionable phones, and their beautiful meticulously designed camera cmos and carl zeiss lens.

A Nokia N8 to a Samsung Galaxy S 2 is akin to a Versace belt to Batman's utility belt. One is the epitome of fashion but useless while the other is multipurpose but reeks fashion monstrosity (would you ever walk around under normal circumstances with it?).

Anyway, HDMI out is the kind of feature that you only want when you start to use it. And since most phones on the market doesn't have it, most people simple don't care about it.
The problem is, when you get used to a phone with HDMI out that you can enjoy your HD videos from your phone directs on your TV, you can't think about getting a phone without it.

Lol I had a n8 and besides the camera which was good, there is nothing else which matches the galaxy s2. My sister has an iPhone 4. I must admit that the iPhone is smooth..... But i don't like the restrictions on it eg. You can't pair two phones and Bluetooth pics across to or from other phones.this is something that most people do and I am surprised it has not even been fixed with the latest iOS update. I am one of the very few people who use videocalling and appreciate the videocalling over 3G on this device. I could only videocall other iPhones which most people I know didn't have. The lack of flash on the iPhone was disappointing. Even though other phones like the n8 had flash support, it didn't run as smooth on some sites and the low screen resolution messed up things.

The only thing I was disappointed with on the galaxy was the all plastic body. But trust me.... Until you hold the physical phone in your hand, it still feels really good.
