22 June 2011
Today's smartphone scene is one of fierce competition and breakneck growth. Rarely though do announcements get any bigger than this. The Nokia N9 seemed forever stuck in rumorland, but never lost its grip on users' minds. The handset is rightfully enjoying as warm a reception...

AnonD-5197, 28 Jun 2011You were about to kick yourself in the face because you can... moreWhy would I kick myself in the face? Is it because u cant grasp the fact that Harmattan runs at 120fps? Keep it up with clueless attacks.

Nokia Fan, 25 Jun 2011The N9 looks great, but what's new? Really? The interface a... moreThe Alien Dalvik SW you mention for Android apps is not a layer separating Android from MeeGo. The system allows simple porting of apps rather than emulation of any kind. Since Android uses linux, most of the Android system calls (say thread switching) will call the identical system call on the MeeGo linux system. According to the vendor, little or no performance or battery hit takes place (of course, I accept that they would say that but it also seems reasonable given the provenance of the two systems). The app itself would therefore be downloaded as an N9 app anyway and would not require Android or Google to be involved I think, just the vendor who wants more sales.

dany, 25 Jun 2011 What if I want to focus on one thing, but lock exposure o... moreSo you know... the display uses almost no energy when off. Only 'lit' pixels use energy basically, that is why the clock can be made to display when the screen is 'off'. This also allows indication of missed calls, message or emails (individual icons). Waking requires that you touch the display twice in the same place quite accurately to avoid accidental waking. Accidental waking is not that serious since it sleeps again after only a few seconds (long enough to read notifications or move to the home screen). Moving to home requires a swipe from OFF the display across the display. Moving within apps (calendar days etc.) uses short swipes within the screen. Although it is possible to occasionally err, an incorrect swipe that would move to the home display is visible as-it-happens and therefore easy to stop. Lastly, the camera DOES have a dual action shutter button, you touch and hold the on-screen button and it focus locks as well as holds exposure etc. You can then move the device to frame as desired and release the 'button' - it is pretty elegant. As far as pre-focus etc. (as dual action shutters also can do), the camera (and video) app allows touch focus to any place on the screen and the camera auto focuses continuously thereafter. Also, it has TWO mics - it can record stereo HD sound at 720p HD video at 30fps.

AnonD-12237, 28 Jun 2011Really? using your left hand for the shutter is so unconventionalThe camera shutter has no button, the button often referred to as a camera button is the power button. The shutter 'button' is on-screen and is on the right. of course you could, if desired take pictures upside down if you are a leftie and really want that button on the left (the button does not move, even in portrait mode although the icons do rotate).

Alui, 29 Jun 2011Without an app market, any smartphone is dead these days. O... moreThe N9 has Nokia maps and a specific Driving app for navigation. These use downloadable maps (no PC needed either) for almost all countries without the need for a subsequent internet connection if desired. This even includes local searches. Since roaming data costs effectively prevent the use of google/bing maps outside the home network, this is a huge advantage over other systems. The drive app allows safer use while driving (duh!) whilst using the same maps of course. There is integration between the two (select a destination in the maps app and ask it to navigate by car and Drive starts up). Interestingly, if you ask to navigate on foot, it remains within the maps app and dynamically updates your routing as you walk. They are both really nice to use.

Without an app market, any smartphone is dead these days. Only hardcore fans will pay for it.
Anyone who wants to buy a smartphone, looks for navigation solutions and 3'rd party apps. The review is totally silent in these matters.

about your 5 nokia's. I think it's not about the brand or the design or the hardware or software, it's about how you use ur phone.
if u take care of it, any phone will last it's maximum(unless there isn't a general problem with the phone)
and btw to the other comments
nokia's hardware and software are much better optimized than other phones.

Nokia needs to steal the market again like about 6 years ago. But they have to make something outstanding, like bring the first to release quad core with a whole new OS, not windows or sybian. I'm ssure they can do it, they need to just tell them selves it's either we make it or don't and put every penny they have on making it happen, we all know nokia phones are always beautiful design etc. It's just the interior. Can't buy a Ferrari with a Toyota interior

Symbian is a good OS with lots of functionality (like coherent quality 2-way call recording, multitasking and an amazing mapping solution).
This phone also looks promising. If this thing can record phone calls the same way (or better) then my current Nokia smartphone then I might be tempted. If it can't then this is a no go. Since Windows Phone neither can record phone calls (and Nokia has no say in it) Nokia WP7 phones ar out o/t question too. Just as I avoided every other WP7-phones like the plague.

From my experience Nokia's phones are better quality than the Korean phones. I've had a Samsung and a LG and they all break down after a year. I managed to keep my Nokia for 2.5 years till the battery died. SO i think nokia's phones are top class when it comes to quality.
