Launchpad, 26 Jun 2011this needs to have SWYPE. please!Hi Launchpad,
Swype is beautifully implemented in the N9, and yes, you can switch between text entry languages and modes by a horizontal swipe over the keyboard. Swipe UI FTW!

Sails, 26 Jun 2011Ah, we are getting somewhere :) If you follow the reply ... moreN900 is GOD. It is running at 600mhz and yet is snappier than a dual core phone. If overclocked, it's even faster. Android needs 2 cores in order to run as snappy as my 2 year old N900, don't even dare comparing with the N9 and Qt ;)

AnonD-291, 26 Jun 2011Me trolling ? Then what about you ? Why did you drag SGSII ... moreAh, we are getting somewhere :)
If you follow the reply chain to the beginning, it wasn't me who started talking about SGS II.
Have you actually tried running an app that tries to keep the CPU running at max, then watch the CPU speed? Last time I tried that with SGS I it clamped down fairly quickly. I would be really interested to see if SGS II could actually run for longer periods with full speed. You wont be convincing me that current smartphones don't have temperature limitations though :)
Haven't used SGS II that much or ran that test, but for the time I did use it, the phone got quite hot at the top corner. Almost uncomfortably so.
I believe the SoC that SGS II uses doesn't support dual channel so the RAM can't be dual channel. If you want to check, find which SoC SGS II is using (can't remember and don't feel like doing the googling) and what kind of RAM it supports.
Also, I do own Nokia N900 and have been running MeeGo on that and also on a laptop, so yes I have tested it. Not the particular version running N9, but close enough.

AnonD-12067, 26 Jun 2011There are a big Quality gap Between Nokia and Samsung. Noki... moreI wouldn't say Apple is first in HW quality. Given, the looks and feel of iPhones are indeed top notch, but the quality of the HW inside and some of the solutions simply are not good quality.
I would rank Nokia first in that competition, easily.

Sails, 26 Jun 2011I really shouldn't answer since you don't really want to un... moreMe trolling ? Then what about you ? Why did you drag SGSII into this topic anyway ? Why do you go to the foolish extent of declaring an unreleased phone with unknown OS better than a critically acclaimed phone ?
You're right, the processor does not run to its full capacity all the time. That is to SAVE battery, not because of overheating problems. You know, most games use 100% of available resources. So try playing a graphic intensive HD game (with few apps in the background) or try recording full HD video a whole day (24 hrs). See if the device blows up or melts down, or atleast stop working which should happen according to what you say.
You're right again, 1.2 GHz phone is not necessarily faster than 1 GHz phone. It all depends on its architecture, frequency (clock speed), instruction per cycle, etc. But anyway the processor in N9 IS inferior to the one in SGSII without any doubt. Mind you, although stock android doesn't natively support multicore, the android gingerbread in SGSII is customized by samsung to do so in its interface.
Saying that one core always consumes less battery than a dual core processor is utter BS. The battery consumption depends on many factors like architecture, clock speed, instruction set, instruction per cycle, number of cores, various new technology, etc. Example a core 2 duo is faster and always consumes less power than a pentium 4.
I know the Optimus 3D and 2X have dual channel memory controller, but I havent yet found a source which says that Galaxy SII has a single channel or otherwise. Do you have any?
Yes, linux is apparently efficient, but that doesn't necessarily mean Meego will have the advantage over there. We still have to wait for it to be released.

BETTER SAID for a clear image: at a car is not important the brute horsepower if it's heavy or if it have bad brakes, bad gearbox. did you know the most important specification at a car is "horse per kilogram", not horsepower?? if it's heavy and bad designed the power drains for breaking the wind and at cornering the car is going out. similar to this is the samsung galaxy s2: hardware resources are drained but an incompetent o.s.

AnonD-291, 26 Jun 2011LOL.........LOL....."performance is actually about tem... moreI really shouldn't answer since you don't really want to understand, just do some fanboy trolling, but here goes anyway...
I'm not saying SGS II is not powerful device with smooth interface. It certainly is. It brute forces that even through Android inefficiencies.
However, you do know that none of the current top of the line smartphones are actually running at their full speed 100% of the time? In fact even under constant load those numbers could be 40% or lower for longer periods. Why? Because of temperature. Factors affecting this are of course the overall design of the phone and cooling, the architecture of the CPU and so on.
What this does mean is that you can't really say that 1.2 GHz phone is always faster than 1.0 GHz phone, the slower phone can well average a higher GHz if the design is better etc. Also, currently the dual core smartphones is mostly a gimmick. Most of the smartphone software is still designed for single core.
The 1.2 GHz dual core phone will need to feed two cores with current and manage two cores worth of temp. You get nice "burst" speed when CPU has been sleeping, but over time the speed could well be equal or even worse and it will eat up the battery quicker. Also the higher temps can easily shorten the CPU and phone life span.
I know it is a great marketing tactic to just throw out the phone with the biggest GHz and Gb numbers, but people really should understand that it doesn't actually guarantee anything. One great example is the LG Optimus 3D which will almost certainly be faster with 512 Mb dual-channel ram than the Galaxy S 2 with its 1024 Mb single-channel.
Software optimizing is also a VERY important factor. Well optimized software can run hundreds of times faster. MeeGo has the advantage here, since it is running full Linux stack that has been optimized for a very long time.
With battery life the question of course comes down to what is "performance". To me it means I can do what I want fast and efficiently. If the battery is dead, I can't really do that. I wouldn't want the latest overclocked i7 on my smartphone, even if the temperature wouldn't be a problem. The battery would dead in few seconds of light browsing.
There needs to be a balance in everything.
