Sony Ericsson Xperia mini pro review: No small affair

24 August 2011
Sony Ericsson have always done a good job of putting big ideas in a small package. The original Xperia mini lineup wasn't ridiculously powerful but had plenty of personality. The pint-sized smartphones did well on the market and you...

aaah man! This is such a hard choice to make. The Mini pro, the Ray and the Neo V are all within my price range. Can't decide, must decide arrrgh...the pain.

Well there is one big disadvantage which keeps me away from Sony phones. It's the UI, and the fact that its customization is so limited, even thougt 3part apps on Android Market. I'm not saying that other producents don't have the same policy about their phones, as a matter of fact HTC does the same, but it is so far better that Sony's. And it even looks better. But it is only my personal opinion.

Worlder, 25 Aug 2011Could someone please post your experience with the battery life?i've had this phone for a couple weeks now and am very pleased with it. Battery life is great, with 3g on all the time, about 3 hours web browsing, half an hour of video, an hour of listening to music, i get 1.5 days worth on one charge. Its not the best but standard these days. I have been interested in these mini series since the x10 mini pro but was scared they seemed a bit underpowered. This generation definitely makes up for it and it is lightning fast with no lag whatsoever. the keyboard is absolutely great to use... loving this phone.

Worlder, 25 Aug 2011Could someone please post your experience with the battery life?Battery usage is no worse than any other smartphone I have come across. When it has dropped in power suddenly, it was because I was purposely taxing the system with multiple downloads or videos. With the smaller screen to power, you can stretch it out to 3 days as per the review on standby. Naturally it will all depend on how you use it.

The EP500 is easy to find in many stores and at 1500mAH, it is a good size.

I have the phone and there are a couple of features that are missed out in the review that actually enhance the phone even more:

Type and share feature: This allows you to type a single message and then decide where you want it displayed i.e. as a Facebook status/message, as a text message, a tweet etc - I found this to be a cool feature. No launching of individual apps, just one message, select the destination and off it goes

Qirocity: The first SE phone to come preloaded with Sony's music and video service! Stream music (basic or premium) and rent or buy movies. Being in the UK, Android offers hardly (if) any movie services. This solves the problem for me and it has a great range of new and old movies and over 7 million songs

Worlder, 25 Aug 2011Hi GsmArena, why no details about battery life testing is t... more"The 1200mAh battery is said to ideally last 340 hours of standby and 5 hours and 25 minutes of talk time in a 3G network. In reality, the Xperia mini pro managed over 3 days in stand-by, connected to a Wi-Fi network most of the time. When we really put it under pressure though, the phone barely lasted a day. It was always connected to both the 3G and Wi-Fi networks, we did heavy browsing, music and video playback, and the usual benchmarks."

I have had this phone now for a month and it is without doubt the best phone I have ever owned. It is certainly quick and a great size. No hassles of putting it my pocket unlike the newer 4+" behemoths being launched. The battery is the same as my old Sony X8 so I even get to have a spare. For all the shortfalls mentioned in this review, 3rd Party apps have made up for any failings, so everything is about as perfect as I could wish for. Great work, Sony!

bought it for Rp. 2250k (USD265).
and contrary to this review, my phone does not support 3G video call.
