Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 review: Power play

16 November 2011
Tablets are cool. But they have a purpose too. Larger screens, higher resolution and more mileage out of the battery make them better suited for certain tasks. That’s why people are not only fascinated by them but do end up actually...

AnonD-35352, 23 Dec 2011I upgraded from the Galaxy S to the Galaxy S 2 and realized... morePanorama (Settings/Shooting Mode/Panorama) works perfect, as long as there is enough light to take a picture for each of the eight shots.

I don't know how the camera compares to others.

The screen is HD, just not full HD = 1920x1080, but it can play full HD via HDMI (verified by me).

And for anyone who is interested, the panoramic photos work great, provided there is enough light to take all the 8 photos.

All I can say is... give me HD display and a far more responsive pen (from the videos the lag is pretty poor) in the Note 2 (hopefully end of this year!) and I'm in!
I love the idea of scribbling memos or lists, etc. ticking things off, and then of course there's the GORGEOUS screen...
Coupled with whatever version of ICS is available end of 2012 - could possibly be the most exciting range of phones to appear for a long time...
At the moment though... similar to the Xperia Play - it's maybe a bit too early to adopt...

Had a Dopod 810, HTC Touch HD, HTC HD2 and now this.

One thing I noticed having the Note is that I no longer have to 'grip' the phone, but can just hold it against my face with the fingers of my open hand. A lot less tension.

My wife has an iPhone 4S and it feels tiny and I have to grip it with my fingertips, which makes it a lot more stressful.

Previously Blackberry 8520, then 9300, later Torch.
Migrated from there to Samsung Galaxy S2 - that has now moved to my wife and I'm on Samsung Galaxy Note.
It is pure pleasure, the screen brilliant, the space excellent, speed fast - overall, brilliant.
I downloaded Swiftkey X Tablet from Market and enjoy the Note tremendously.
Typed on the S2 this morning and believe me, it now feels pretty small, almost uncomfortably small in relation to Galaxy Note.

I upgraded from the Galaxy S to the Galaxy S 2 and realized the stock camera app does not come with panoramic shot anymore. Been using another app for this but it is not as seamless or smooth as the built in function with the original Galaxy S. I'm now very tempted to buy the Note as that was the phone I intended to get instead of the GS2 - but does the Note have the panoramic shot built-in with the stock camera app? Also the flash on my GS2 seems harsh (blindingly bright) which I'm sure I can tweak if I know how (if you can educate me know that it would be much appreciated), does the flash on the Note go as bright? My work phone which is a HTC Desire HD has a similar flash but it is not as bright and the photos come out better...

            Thanks in advance!

I just came back from a business trip in China in which I got the HK version of this phone. It is incredible. Best phone&tablet I have used so far. I've used the iPhone (original, 3G, and 4), Samsung Galaxy S along with HP Touchpad, the iPad and original kindle. With this phone, I no longer have to carry a tablet or an e-reader!

It is fast, responsive, and the screen is downright gorgeous. I have used it extensively to check emails and it is SO much easier to type email and view documents on this then on the iPhone or small Galaxy S. I can type extremely quickly when it is in portrait mode. I also downloaded the kindle app (after rooting the phone and using market enabler for Verizon). I was able to read my ebooks without a problem.

I'm currently using this on the AT&T network and i did NOT have to add a new APN.

              Honestly, best phone/tablet by far!

Suggest check for best deal for this phone at: bestdealschecking.info/note-n7000/

              Good Luck!

I was at the point of getting myself the 10.1 Tablet to use for a large screen GPS with all it's other apps, when I noticed the "Note" has a barometer. I'd be gratefull if anyone can tell me if it can be used as a barometric altimeter on the navigation/GPS (for showing the altidude above sea level).
If this is the case, I would be seriously impressed, and would buy one today. Is there an after sales bracket/stand available to be purchased for the Note, like that of the Tablet?

ive been using Note for the past 1 month. previously owned an iphone 4 for the last 1year or so. Seriously the Note surpasses Iphone in every aspect and the screen is just pure awesomeness. go and compare with ur iphone side by side people!!!!.. words cant describe how better the screen is.. and about the plastic feeling, most of the iphone(or whatever phone) users put plastic protective cover on it..isn't it? so whats the difference?!!!!

It would still be better if there was a four point calibration routine.

Will left handed Note user please check whether when using your left hand, the insert point is 1.5mm to the left of the pen tip, whaeras in the right hand, it is accurate.

It does not seem to be dependent upon the pen rotation.

                      Try this with each hand:
                      1. Draw a square of about 1-2 cm.
                      2. Draw a line from the lower right corner down and right at a 45 degree angle.

How close to the corner does that line start from for each hand.

I have NO idea why or how the pen can distinguish the hand used.

Sorry to say, but you're not being fair regarding the display. :) You posted that cropped image (with the 3 comparisons on page 2) FAR MORE ZOOMED IN on the Note than the other two... You should have the same portion of the image for a fair comparison.

I bought this phone a little over a week ago and although this phone is big by today's standards it still within manageable limits. I don't regret purchasing this phone, in reality I find myself doing a lot more with it than I expect. No longer am I pulling up my iPad while outside of home. The phones screen does offer much more flexibility than my past phone (iPhone 4) and the higher resolution does make it a great choice for surfing the web. It's fast and manages to last a full day of heavy use from my end. So far it has replaced of my Kindle, camera (excellent 8mp), mp3 player, video player, iPad, Gps, etc. This phone does it all. It's big but with size comes greater overall usage.

That is because they have to satify both compactness and lots of facilites, leading to lack of space for allowing hardware configurability. The components are soldered down, otherwise extra space would be required for connectors or sockets.

The phone is only 20+% bigger than the SG2.

Fact is, while I was on the Note for over an hour yesterday at the food court at a local shopping centre, NOBODY near me seemed to take any notice AT ALL!

So much for looking like a dork. It has a bigger screen, but it is not that big that it looks anything more than a phone, and hence is ignored.

However, I would expect a Samsung 7" Tab would be noticed.
