Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III preview: Second encounter

8 May 2012
There's no need for us to tell you the importance of the Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III for both its own manufacturer and the Android world in general - our daily interest stats speak for themselves. Its predecessor was really something special...

Hold the device in your hand and you'll see the odd combination of a phone that's been designed very safely, as probably approved by lawyers for the market, and is also rather hideous, from the choice of colours to the 'blob' connotations of its architecture. It feels like both pure uncreativity and a complete lack of knowledge about industrial design. Infact, with the nature inspiration, it feels as if they've completely thrown industrial out the window. And we like industrial ideals: it makes for some rather logically beautiful products (hello HTC One X).

The Galaxy S3 is supposed to represent a break from the norm, something out of the ordinary to not become 'one of the sheep.' Instead we received a set of poorly implemented ideas and concepts in a substandard looking device, with delusions of nature-influenced grandeur

"I could continue my countless criticisms of the likes of the S-Pebble (an MP3 player...for your phone...), the camera software being a straight copy of HTC's Image Sense in the One series, that damn elongated home button; but the conclusion is simply this. Samsung have shown a rather disappointing hand for all the promotion they have placed into the Galaxy S3. They have placed faith and research into the wrong areas, and created a phone which demonstrates their lack of understanding of what the average user really wants from their device.

But it's got a quad-core processor, so the benchmark's can make you feel superior about something at least, and they'll be selling them in pop-up cubes a'la Apple Store. Don't be a sheep by being one of the sheep."

Anonymous, 09 May 2012I see. I never changed my battery or used more than half of... moreTo be fair, I doubt many people change their battery!
But, what Sammy do like doing is releasing a larger battery a few months down the line, which is no bad thing...

        HOWEVER

As an owner of a GS2 myself, I cannot believe you haven't used more than all of the 16gb!!! Internal memory is about 11gb once you have the software loaded...

And then take one film in pseudo-HD (3gb?) a couple of gb of music, photos, videos, installed software - each a gb or so... and that's your lot... I have a 32gb card as well, and I swear it constantly gets full!!

And that is the GS2 which isn't considered "HD" - I took 10 seconds of 720p video and it used 15mb space - imagine what 1080p will take for just a minute...

How people like Sony or HTC imagine we're going to cope with ridiculously small amounts of storage, I'll never know.. it's the major fail of 2012... for this reason alone, simply by doing nothing and keeping features from last year... Sammy is again miles ahead of the competition...

Fantastic performance. I'm really waiting to see the results for the battery performance. So far, I didn’t see any info on that in any of the forums.

Why do Samsung phones look cheaper with each release? Samsung Wave and Omnia 7 looked really great with metallic body ages ago but today where you'd expect even more quality materials on 600+ EUR phones you get nasty cheap plasticy frame. Yuck.

Firstly, a big thanks to GSMA for this, they continue to be the leaders in mobile reviews and previews, fair, unbiased and informative... hats off to you!

                        Secondly...
I was on the fence with this phone, looking to wait for iphone 5 (as all phones released MWC2012 have been less than inspiring and often REMOVING essential features, such as expandable memory card for no reason at all...) but I have to say, this is making me want one of these more and more...

                        Thirdly...
Looking at those benchmarks... what really shocked me was how poor the Sony Xperia S fared against all others... ouch...

I think in general, yes the design is uninspiring, but no doubt built to last, yes, the HTC One X looks a lot better, but you're sacrificing storage (something an HD device devours constantly)

I think I may have to seriously look at owning one of these... once the 32gb+ version is available...

I've look at it yesterday, and its not that different from AMOLED both in wide view angles and deep black. Also it's like 1.5x times more bright on max brightness.
AMOLED with white background takes about 2.5x times more juice than LCD in any mode. Surely it takes little with black background, but it's a pain to adjust what I have to display on screen in any mode.
Also, surely, you can de-saturate AMOLED to more natural colours, but this comes at price - you using only part of colour gamut, which reduces colour resolution. Banding becomes apparent.
