Nokia 808 PureView blind test: The sum of all pixels

14 June 2012
The Nokia 808 PureView has finally landed in swirling storms of hype. And of course, it wasn't given a chance to catch a breath. We didn't meet it empty-handed either. We had a finger on the shutter of some mean cameraphones and an EVIL digicam...

1285 comments !!! this is an absolute record. all trollers of nokia must understand that mature quality is the real fascination of a product with the pedigree heritage, not dual core or useless performances on paper, but in reality you have a stupid toy with a bunch of stupid applications, totally useless. only kids or teenagers can choose a sgs3 instead this nokia 808

Broad daylight? Let's see comparison shots in LOW LIGHT with HIGH ISO.

Is the 808 up to the challenge? Bring it on!

AnonD-59645, 18 Jun 2012Can you make a phone call with a camera? Or browse the web,... morecompletely right. 808 is great for capturing the moments. However many people used n8 in a professional way

A cheap kit zoom or something better. There's more to a camera than its sensor, and photography is much more than just a camera. And this small Olympus is only half the price of the 808 at the moment.

AFAIK you can't get raw files out of 808 or can you? ;)

Still waiting for the high ISO tests with digital zoom...

To get the most out of N808, one must use raw files and a raw converter....not(JPEG vs JPEG is fair and square)

Choice of lens affects detail rendering, and there was no info which lens was used... Why not extend to choice of weathers as the Olympus will perform at some weather and N808 at other weathers.. Choice of tripod also affects and to top it off w have to consider the choice of memory card used.. Yes maybe that have some effect on the quality of picture.

The thing is, a win is a win.. and in this case it's N808's victory. It does not matter what the situation is. It is a phone it should not be even close. But yet it beats a proud micro four thirds Olympus E-PL2.

            LOL at Olympus's retaliation

Nekko, 19 Jun 2012The intention here is to compare the quality of the sensor ... moreAll contenders were dowscaled to 8MP here, and OOC jpg was used for E-PL2 which means less than optimum detail.

I'd like to see test with higher ISO, say 1600. Combine that with digital zoom vs. telefoto lens on Olympus.

                I don't think 808 beats Olympus...
                And obviously...
A(N8).E(808).F(Olympus) are in one league, while the others are in another.

Tim, 19 Jun 2012You have done some research thanks. What do you think of t... moreThe intention here is to compare the quality of the sensor and not the features. N808 sensor VS Canon sensor. Take your dslrs and remove all those lenses please. The objective of this comparison is to test how well all those 38MP pixel does in capturing information. That's why the Canon and iP4s images are upscaled. If N808 picture quality is close to iP4s upscaled then those pixels are no good. If N808 picture quality is close to Canon upscaled then those pixels are commendable. Turns out the N808 38MP pixels have more information than 21MP Canon. WOW! The N808 really have a beast of a sensor! Now imagine if Nokia developed interchangeable lens attachment to N808. Where to put your dslr now eh? when that time comes the only dslr advantage is leveled. :D For me the N808 is as good as a dslr which is stuck with a single lens (which is what most of those wannabe photographers invest) *widegrin*

                    Few notes:
To get most detail out of E-PL2, one must use raw files and a raw converter. Out of camera jpegs have reduced detail.

Choice of lens affects detail rendering, and there was no info which lens was used.

E-PL2 with a kit lens costs at the moment much less than Nokia 808, which also lacks on other photo features besides it's resolution.

How about not comparing this phone with other smartphones, neither with DSLRs, but with compact digicams?

                      And also different lightning conditions.

I can't say anything yet as of now.

We would've been able to see how does it compete against iphone 4s n gs3.
