LG Optimus 4X HD P880 review: Firing on all fours

29 June 2012
Last year LG was in pole position in the dual-core game with the Optimus 2X. It was the phone everyone looked up to, before there was a Galaxy S II and before there was an HTC Sensation. There was obviously no rush this time although, to be fair, LG did announce well on time...

Unknown, 10 Jul 2012Should I buy Samsung galaxy SIII or LG optimus 4X HD? Pleas... moreGo for Optimus 2x which itself is bettet than Sams S2. Compare screen tech as fundamental visual base. Other than iphone& 2x (now LG4x) none was using LCD- IPS(intra-planar-switching) screens which use less battery than Sams LED AMOLED screens. SamG2 cant even support a flashlite as its already abattguzzler. Go for 2X or 4x (if not more expensive). Great visual, great performance. 2x h/w is under utilizd by released s/w.

I hope LG can get more phones in the market. Samsung phones are crap. I've had 2 & regret both. Parents have had lg phones as long as I can remember. I won't ever buy a Samsung again.

Anonymous, 02 Jul 2012you have no knowledge if you think lg 4x is better than sam... more"they put only a big screen to blind you"

isn't that what all the android phone makers do. Plastic toys with big screens. In fact my Nokia 701 is more capable as a phone than ANY android, iPhone and/or WP7.x device. And I can PROOVE it!.

The only thing where Android devices shine (until JB 4.1 comes around) is websurfing. They have a Desktop-like experience with full flash. But this will be gone in Jelly Bean in favour of a suposedly "smoother" UI. Hell with the current quad cores and dual channel memories those things shoulda be smooth already.

And why o why haven't we STILL no full 2-way call recording. My defunkt Sony-ericsson had it. My current Nokia 701 can do it automatically. But all NONE of those bloody Android phones can. And DON'T accuse me of not knowing what I'm talking about. I also have an Xperia U AND a Lumia 800. They both suck!

I held it today on a store, the screen bottom had a white space gap probably caused lg's bad software,LG phones like thew 2x are 100% unreliable on the software and get NO serius or in time updates,I've said it 100 times but people must know!

AnonD-59621, 04 Jul 2012Battery consumption : Largest : cpu Exynos is 32nm, nv ... moreAccording to the data, looks like the S3 screen drains the battery at about two times the screen on the 4X, on the other side it drains slightly less for the CPU on the S3 about 1150mw vs 1261mw, interesting...
That means that according to the data the screen on the 4X is far less power hungry than the S3, still the Galaxy manages to have an impressive battery, so does the 4X.
I think the performance on the S3 it has something to do with the exynos 32nm vs 40nm found on the 4X.
I found the battery on the 4X to be very efficient both on standby and with moderate use though.

i think there is a prob. With the review unit of this site. I just got my LG optimus 4x(black colour) and the phone is superb the battery life is awesome i get about 6hrs of continous browsing with music playing in the background and the audio quality is also great. I use a SGS2 and the audio of my 4x is apparently louder than it and music sounds nicer and clearer than my SGS2 so far the phone is awsome LG nice job

Anonymous, 02 Jul 2012listen, i work for orange as terminal tester at sales dep. ... moreYou are talking bulshit. You are going to tell me that 3g on iphone is faster than hsdpa+ of 21Mb/s. iphone has a very restrictive OS. No comparison possible with android. No sd no removable battery, ridiculously small screen, battery not that good. Speed over 3G is 7Mb/s.
                                Thats what i call crap.
By the way you've been working in orange and learnt nothing and saying to believe the expert? Who is the expert? You? pathetic.
I don't know what are you doing here in this forum talking crap, you should be on your restricted iworld for brainless s4 users.
I wouldn't go to an iphone to talk rubbish, so why you guys always come to android spitting the same old story. Whats wrong with the ifanboys.

Go back to your iforum and try to convice yourselve and the rest there that your iphone with the ridiculous screen, no memory expansion and horrible iOS totally restricted and pay all your downloads, while we do the rest with android with galaxy htc or lg.

You guys want to convince yourself that your purchased is the best of the best, so all of you who has an HTC, want to make it 1st, galaxy s3, first and so on...
I can say LG nailed this handset, it has a four core almost as capable as the S3 or One X, more or less, I don't care about the benchmarks, as you wan't be able to discern the differences on a daily use.
HTC has no removable battery, and SD expansion, for me that was a crime, and the main reason I didn't bother to buy it, and the dropbox I don't care as is only for 2 years.
There have been some issues with the HTC screen, and my last HTC had a horrible battery consumption, and now is not even removable.
Galaxy S3 is girly to say the least, also not even available on black, pentile screen and European model has no LTE support, yet they are asking 499 GBP or around 570 Euros at the cheapest for the 16GB model, isn' it crap?? for that horrible looking phone that is quite a resemblance of the 80's or 90's Nokias, and to make the things worst, they add a physical button, an asymmetrical ugly one to go on par with the ugly design.
Now everybody is complaining about the 4X without even owning it, which makes the thing look like envy of not having wait and have an HTC One x, with better battery, also removable, and a msdxc up to 64GB expandable, yes check here.

                                  http://www.lg.com/de/mobiltelefone/alle-lg-mobiltelefone/LG-P880-Optimus-4X-HD.jsp

Why should I choose a One X, with same specs, but no removable battery and sd expansion?
Why should I choose a Samsung S3, which is not what I was expecting and waited for so long, ugly, pentile screen, 16Gb for nearly 599Euros.
Get over it, you spent your bucks on your phones, and now don't want to recognize that this is a fine and nice piece of work worth the wait, and more than an alternative for those who for the reasons mentioned before did wait and can get the 4X now.
Having said that, also is better seeing more brands competing each other with high end devices, the more there are the better for customers (means us writing here).
The less there are, let's say only samsung or iphone, the less choice, and that is not good.
So let LG play the party and hope other brands will do the same.
Otherwise we will end up only with three brands around, samsung and iphone.
Is that what you guys want?

                                    Battery consumption :
                                    Largest : cpu

Exynos is 32nm, nv T3 is 40nm. Without architecture of SoC of each, T3 is 20% more power hungry, which may vary,by 5 % max. SoC-wise.
I`ve found (which may not be true but it gives idea),
                                    Exynos 4212 draws ~1050mw cpu (1.5 ghz) + 100mw gpu(266mhz) (from samsung comercial)
                                    T3 draws 1261mw (1.3 ghz) (nvidia slides)
in terms of the specs they provided, samsung and nvidia,if you like you can calculate, exynos cpu is on 1.4 ghz,and gpu shoud be 400mhz, while T3 is 1.5ghz.

                                    2nd : screen

                                    Lg`s 4X true hd ips ~650mw
HoX should be somewhere around but little more than 4X
S3 ~ HOX, S1 was alos pentile but that generation draws almost 1200mw of power.

                                    3rd : wifi

On the battery tests here on gsm arena, S3 haves nice advantage over HOX and 4X, with more optimized roms for cpu and core usage for T3 battery life should improve. Bravo for S3 on this field.

U can do talking for months which phone is the best, or which is good and which bad....
The top 3 android phones right now are HOX, S3, 4X.
The only thing in that lg 4x, HOX, are in disadvantage over S3 is battery life, cause both of them have bad tegra 3 optimization, when they improve in that it will improve in battery life. When it comes to camera by my personal opinion of all top phones goes 808pw>N8>4s>EXPS>s2>s3>4x>hox. None of them can be compared to amateur dslrs, not even 808pw. Everything else is negligible, i personally prefer this order HOX>4X>S3, due to price, quality, processing power, usability, and etc.... which is rely not important.
The thing that is, we never had so equaled phones in a high end market like this three, everyone has it flaws and qualities. I just can say bravo for lg, cause they never have this good model.
