Microsoft Surface review: Ripples of change

19 November 2012
Having powered anything from personal media players to enterprise servers, Redmond once again has a little something to call its own. It must wish it's bigger than the Xbox and sure hopes no one remembers the Kin phone. The Microsoft Surface...

Judging from Office 2013, calculator, paint, etc that act and look the same as in their desktop counterparts, I suspect to make traditional win apps running on RT is a matter of simple recompile?

I don't know why so many people are going nuts about a brand they are using. I also have a Nokia 800 phone, Macbook pro and a windows computer. Who cares?! It's just a technology. Make best of it=)

So basically every spec other than "expandable storage" is better on the iPad. Cool.

You also cant get DropBox? Double cool.

Nice idea, and I like new stuff, but today you have to be ready and not even DropBox? Thats a joke. Its all i use for university.

I see no real advantage of MS Surface over competitors. I most certainly don't care about Windows RT and the listed 'advantages' are just marketing scam. For example: Office out of the box. Well, it does not support VBA so if you use Excel for more than creating a shopping list then it is worth nothing. MS just could not get it right.

You don't need to bash a brand just to show loyalty. I own samsung galaxy s3 and nokia n9 and I will get a lumia 920, a nexus 4 and a surface RT. I wont buy a nexus 7 or 10 because of personal preferences. I personally love windows 8 but I dual boot kubuntu. I will buy surface because I can hook up my girlfriend's ipad 4. That is great. Now stop being ridiculous fanboys and enjoy technology. Everybody has preferences. No need to attack others

AnonD-45523, 20 Nov 2012would be using keyboard and mouse with it when needed.... ... moreI do not think greasy fingerprintinfested touch-screens will be popular worktools, and gestures on the laptop Windows 7 touch-pad is almost like having a "touch-screen" but without the greasy fingerprints... on the screen!
"Office Suite Pro" for Android can do all the office-editing that most users actually need, ever do, so there is no real reason for buying any Surface just to get Microsoft Office!
Windows 8, and WP8, is only all about marketing hype, and Windows RT is pointless!

Anonymous, 19 Nov 2012Why people want surface pro? It cost so much and do you rea... morewould be using keyboard and mouse with it when needed....
but here you are getting a tablet instead of an ultrabook or a laptop.
I can do things on surface pro which netiher ipad or nexus 10 can..
also if you look at the specs of surface pro...it blows all tablets out of the water.

i think a tablet is a waste if you want a lightweight compact device which satisfies your computing needs....since for most of the stuff I have to use my laptop...cannot get it done on any tablet....however surface pro will blur those boundaries.

plus microsoft has already started modifying most x86 apps to work with touch screen

No right?since you want to buy tablet not desktop!!

here we are talking about tablets not laptops...

Here we go again, everyone start praising the document editing, same as on cellphones, but we all know it's almost never being used in reality. It's just something people want nowadays, and just a percent of us actually use it. Totally useless feature for most of us, those who really need it can buy it from app stores for their respective ecosystem.

This is one of the most productive tablets in the market as is. The only place its lacking is apps which is being catered for every passing day.

USB port, touch cover, split-screen multitasking, Office 2013, expandable memory, HD video out etc all making it stand-out that most competitors especially the iPad.

Android, on the other hand, offers similar HW features (NOT ALL) plus better apps, but Win RT would be a better platform and ecosystem in the longer run.

Anonymous, 20 Nov 2012For the price of a Surface Pro you could get a MacBook Air ... moreThat's not the point. MacBook Air isn't touch capable, hence it wouldn't give you the Win 8 experience as on a Surface Pro. Plus, even with its all flash architecture, the Air wouldnt have as good processing capabilities as the Surface Pro.
