Android for beginners: Setting up your phone

29 December 2012
So you got an Android smartphone for Christmas? Congrats! Now, go ahead and do the robot dance. We'll pretend we're not watching. One thing you can be certain of, no one's gonna laugh at you. A new droid is worth celebrating - but if it's your first, you may as well want to make some noise...

All well and good with Android but when the novelty wears off you're left with a symbian on steroids. The system crashes due to overclocking, the battery doesn't last longer than a few hours, I get distress from trying to micromanage everything and I have to pay extra for every single app worth downloading. Conrats to the Cynogenmod team for building a great rom out of the Samsung junk but I'm going to switch back to iphone. I wonder how much a 4S 64GB would cost me these days... :-(

PS: also willing to try out WP8 if enough people recommend it to me.

Well, all in all Android is exactly what Symbian would be if they invested on it.

This is another proof, that hangdroids are too complicated for average users and overloaded with unneccesary abilities, so setting up needs separate article or review... You are buying things you don't need.

Anonymous, 31 Dec 2012So in summary, you'll need about 30+ apps in order to make ... moreSeriously did u read the article. The apps they suggest is to improve your experience with phone. Must of the stuff it does is already on the phone they just suggest ways u can improve your experiece.

If you use iOS or Windows then i bet you will download apps to better suit your experience.

I bet you used a really cheap andriod phone then got an iphone and said see the andriod is slow. OF course it is slow, u are putting a low end phone vs a high end phone.

Anonymous, 31 Dec 2012So in summary, you'll need about 30+ apps in order to make ... morePlease go and troll somewhere else. Android does not need 30+ apps in order to be useful. It is fully functional of of the box. There are apps for making phone calls, sending and receiving messages, Instant Messaging (GTalk), Email (Gmail) Taking Photographs, Taking Videos, Accessing the Web (Chrome). Buy the latest Nexus device and you will see what I mean. My Galaxy Note 2 did not need me to download any apps as it worked beautifully out of the box. I CHOSE to download additional apps, not because I NEEDED to.

You have chosen to deliberately miss the point of the article and I won't waste any more time on you.

Like everyone has pointed out this makes for a good read indeed. I'd loved to see mxplayer and zplayer included in the media player section.

Great article Gsmarena, hope to see this type of posts for ios, WP and blackberry too......... Well you have covered almost all of the usefull apps. that needs to be installed on new android device, but you forgot about one category, 'Video Player', well you have included music player, but there is no mention of any nice multimedia player, that we can install on new android device...... So please update this article, and include some nice multimedia alternative to the stock android video player, because stock video player of Android comes with very less codec support.........
