BlackBerry Q10 review: There and back again

02 June 2013
Some revolutions end in triumph, others in tyranny. It’s a walk on the edge of a blade between glory and the guillotine. And BlackBerry has had its share of revolutions – the most recent ones being the rebranding and the...

Getting rid of the optical pad was the stupidest thing RIM did. That and never having an FM Radio on almost all BB's. What's wrong with these people?

BB10 should find a ready market out there. Not many of the older generation enjoys touch screens. Your reviews should take cognizance of the this fact in future.

Hey call me old fashioned but QWERTY physical keypads are a must...am on the bike and dialing on a touchscreen cant ever happen...loved Nokia E72....used it till it came apart...then checked nokia E5/^ series but realised they were same old Nokia E72 (processor, specs etc) only different looks...switched to bb as nokia e72 tended to hang after laoding lots of pictures on sd card and couldnt send BULK sms (more than 40 and it would hang)...bb is good but i miss NOKIA PC SUITE...switch on Bluetooth as the SYNC with Outlook was a breeze...OVI was a disastor...BB Suite is HORRIBLE....dont even bother downloading it... From the review it seems BB10 Suite is also horrible...why cant Ontoria folks understand that Software is as much important (else u shall wither like Nokia, Motorola,Siemens....best phones but no software)....any option for a good SYNC software for my contacts

Lizard, 03 Jun 2013Small comparison: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/... moreNice comparison. Thanks!
Only screen size rating seems strange - "relatively small".
Haw can it be bigger without making it in TAB size?
Only way is to use slider like Nokia E7. But that's also different story (segment).
But if we speak about mono-block with full size keyboard, then it seems strange to ask for bigger screen for pocket size phone.

I bought a Motorola Defy Pro specifically for a rugged smartphone with QWERTY. NO other options out there. I don't message a ton, I just want tactile response. On-Screen keys make my eyes hurt and makes for a constantly greasy screen..

ZwanS, 03 Jun 2013I don't believe QWERTY phones are not in demand these days.... moreYou are absolutely right. My brother is engineer (not in mobile business, but still) and as he explained - every moving detail add extra cots for manufacture and significantly rises risks for service costs. Anything mechanical can broke easily. That's why there are so many phones with almost none mechanical key (except power key).
But you are absolutely right. We are not only ones who are waiting for good full keyboard business phone. :)
I'm still using old Nokia E72. I have tried Nokia N8 and E6 for few weeks and Samsung galaxy tab 7.7 as second phone/tab for more then a year. And still switched back to Nokia E72. I hate :) touch screens as they all tends to switch something on/off while seeking and holding phone with shoulder.
And my wife has iPhone5, so I have some experience.
I agree that Androids have lot of advantages, but for me they have even more disadvantages. They are good for social networking, gaming, videos, e.t.c., but not for business person who uses phone primary for calling and as organizer, for email checking (not writing) and some other business stuff.

"Screen size is too small by today's standards and the 1:1 aspect is awkward for video watching" - strange argumentation for professional observer.
How can screen size can be compared to "today standards" (average touch screen standards? 4-5''?) if this phone is principally form different category? Actualy there is no such standard for full keybord non-sliders.
And all previous full keyboard models (Nokia E72, E5, E6 and BlackBerry) even had smaller screen.
This phone is form specific class and it is designied for people who specially looking for full keyboard phone, not some media device to watch pirated movies or gingham style videos.
If observer can't understood such people, then it is better not to review.
Now it seems like someone who hates motorcycles makes review on one of them and says that big disadvantage for THIS MOEDL is that it has only two wheels.
I'm not a fan of this model. My colleague got one and, but I tested it for 15 min.. At least for me the first disadvantage was that there where no red/green keys, and no navigation keys. But keyboard was perfect.
I'm still using old Nokia E72 and waiting for something similar with better processor and bigger ram - full keyboard business model (proper applications) with no - touch screen. But it seems that all, starting with Nokia, thinks that now everybody only need touchscreen (BIG touchscreen) and facebook access.
                          Still waiting.

Hi, I am interested in knowing what data plan the phone needs? Because I read in many places that BIS is no longer needed, is that true?
I fell in love with BB when I got the Curve 8900 in 2009. I had it for 3 years, then I switched to Samsung Galaxy S2, only because I had the problem using my BB abroad without BIS.
I respect Samsung Galaxy, but the phone lasted a year and it started giving me so many problems. I would have bought another BB a year ago, but when the Bold 9900 came out, I was so disappointed, as I expected something like Q10. Well now it is out, and as soon as I have the money I am going to buy it.
I just really hope the rumours about 'no more bis' being true. So are they?

" iOS, Android and Windows Phone have consistently demonstrated their business benefits"

You mean iOS and Windows Phone. No IT professional worth his salt would allow his company the use of Android phones, due to the risk of the user messing them up with downloads from third parties.

Closed OS phones are ideal for business.

I don't believe QWERTY phones are not in demand these days. I believe phone manufacturers are killing them off in order save cost by either reducing materials or reducing complexity of production or both. I believe they do this with a hope that the consumers will take whatever is offered them.
This will lead lead to an eventual market depression due to lack of variety in my opinion.
