Sony Ericsson K800 review: Digicam in disguise

26 June 2006
Sony Ericsson K800 is one of the handsets we were so anxious to test that we could hardly wait for the phone to be brought in the office. Its highly advertised Cyber-shot camera made us as restless as kids on Christmas morning. Once we got it and before we started working on this review we spent a good deal of time experimenting with the exciting 3.2 megapixel camera. Not that we haven't seen a better camera, no! The thing is that this good camera just happens to be a good mobile phone, too.

I hope this isn't belated, but in reply to Cynthia's post, I've had the K750 for ages, and now use it just as a local-call phone for when my friends from abroad come to stay. It's still a handsome and great phone, with a feature set that many current phones still can't match. Great functionality, easy to use, lovely keypad. It shows its age through a slightly thicker body, with a slightly lower res screen, and no bluetooth stereo support for the mp3 player. If these things are deal breakers, then go for the K800.

Just bought a K800 yesterday. Good first impressions, starting with the SE packaging which reminds you that not so long ago this was (apart from the P series phone) the flagship of the SE stable. It's longer than the K750, but otherwise similar width and depth, and with bigger and better screen, 3g, good camera and 'that' flash. Keypad comfortable to use. It carries over the joystick, which some people don't like and others find easy to break, but I've never had a problem with it on the K750.

Functionality and navigation all very familiar from the K750 and my more recent W580 (nice and slim but I'm retiring to occasional use as it's poor keypad was driving me Crazy). Nice camera functions including 'best shot' and two additional camera soft keys up by the ear-piece. Built like a tank with no creaking or flexing. It's like the big brother to the K750, and I'm sure it's a phone that will serve many years of faithful service.

Instore I was choosing between the K800 and the K810 - but the latter seems to be just a re-skin of the former, with a £100 premium, so the choice was easy!

Have owned the k800i for about 8 months, which was enough to end it's life fairly miserably. The phone was great in the beginning, but recently the phone has started to disconnect randomly and get stuck quite often.

The phone was quite slow turning off from the start, but when I compare it to my old nokia 6210i, everything is slow. As usual with good camera phones, this is more of a toy than a phone.

I've just bought the SE K800i and it's great. Huge fan of SE and i must say the first ericsson I've had was the T65, and ever since SE is the only brand I've had...

yes u can use mini video clips as ring tones...

Flaws i found out about the cell -

                1. Terrible Joysitck
                2. The skin of my keypads is peeling off
                3. sometimes my cell restarts by itself
                4. sometimes this horizontal flicker appears on the screen

other than that...its an amazing phone...

I was wondering if you could use a video clip as your ringtone and a thumbnail for a contact person. I have a nokia 5300 right now and I am loving the feature of having my friends record a video clip and I could add it to their contact info as thumbnail and it becomes their ringing tone as well. Can anyone tell me if it does this feature too for k800....I would appreciate it so that I can decide if I should upgrade. Is this fone better than the nokia n70? Thanks please do respond to this comment....

this phone is great, but i miss one thing - there is no light! i have k750 and his light is one of most used features, not for taking picture, but as a lamp...under his light i change tyre, making barbeque, go fishing, walking in forest, drinking in park...so great memories :) k800 is so much better and i want it, but with xenon flash i can't do such things :(

It's just that N93 is 2x more expensive than K800.. I'd buy K800 and beer with rest of the money. N93 is so not worth it.

PS: i believe that there's no difference between a k800 and k800i. it's all about the region where the phones will be/were released.

to all persons who can't decide between the k800 & w850:

buy a k800...just upgrade the memory card to 1gb and fill it up with mp3s and/or aacs (mine's mp4 via nero conversion). the only advatange of the w850 is the megabass. BUT the k800's advantage is the 3.2 MEGAPIXEL CYBERSHOT CAM.

Lastly, browse the comments/opinions at the k810 page. according to the reviewer, there's a little difference between the k810 & k800. just follow the advice there: wait for the release of the k810 and the price of the k800 will drop, buying it is so sweet.

i just purchased the SEK800i. i love the camera and its entertainment function. however, i've observed that its limited capacity for saving contact numbers for a particular contact is one of its downside. sometimes, i also find it difficult to use the joystick. i still like it anyway...hope SE can improve this in the future.
