Sony Ericsson K800 review: Digicam in disguise

26 June 2006
Sony Ericsson K800 is one of the handsets we were so anxious to test that we could hardly wait for the phone to be brought in the office. Its highly advertised Cyber-shot camera made us as restless as kids on Christmas morning. Once we got it and before we started working on this review we spent a good deal of time experimenting with the exciting 3.2 megapixel camera. Not that we haven't seen a better camera, no! The thing is that this good camera just happens to be a good mobile phone, too.

recently looked at samsung s500i and the sound quality through ear piece was really poor. I've had an o2 x4 which had v.good ear piece volume but what's it like on K800i?

I just upgrade my phone from a Samsung D600 to a SEK800i. I loved the D600. It was very user-friendly. The K800i without a doubt has a superior quality camera. The flash is incredible and takes very clear photos in pitch black darkness. However, the joystick takes some getting used to. It sometimes skips to options you're not after. I can't hear my text messages come through. When I want to get a number, it dials the person instead of giving me the number. Maybe it takes getting used to butI am in two minds to swap it for the D900 coz it sounds like it is similiar to the D600. I am just concerned about its battery life and the fact that the display is prone to cracking.Someone please help me make up my mind! Should I keep this phone or exchange it for nthe D900??

I wonder if anyone have seen clear WHITE color (not gray) on the K790's display? Posted in this article photos didn't show any. Neither I could see it while running demo program on the phone or browsing through its menus (oh those dim themes!). Note that display brightness is set to maximum by default.
      -----
Can't understand how the K790's display look can be rated "exellent".

I 'upgraded' from z800i to k800i. Here are some things I noticed so far (only had it one day so far):
            - loudness on z800i better (it had 'TRUbass' setting also - that played loud with minimal distortion)
            - LED on z800i was a great flashlight but terrible flash (k800i has program that can run the orange LED as a torch)
            - Slight lag in k800i when going through menus, but only small
            - k800i font and display is very good on the eyes and extremely managble
            - I've heard the new Nokia cameras outshine the k800i but WOW this camera is good for a Cam Phone - auto focus etc is great.

              hi all,

i wonder if there is any possiblity that K800 or any later SE phone has security lock?! i intend to buy K800, BUT! i might change to Nokia say N73, and one of my reasons is that SE as i experienced (yet i have K750) has no secuirty lock...!
              many thanx

I'm a little confused, but if someone could inform, which version is better for the US on Cingular (old AT&T) the K800 or the K790?

Main dif that I see is that
                K800 has 3G
                vs
                K790 has EDGE and 850MHz
But being that they are adding more 3G, I don't really know which is better.

I bought one yesterday. If you want a music phone, then u better make your choice out from Wxxx series, but if u want a mobile phone with great quality photo making technologies, then K800 is your only choice.

Only thing i need is to make him work as a webcam. Any ideas, mail ne

Can you set any supported sound file as a txt or MMS alert??. I've got a v800, and that only allows you to choose from 6 different sounds that can't be customised

                                my make or break decision for this phone is based on three things i'd like to get answered;

1> Can you change the two softkeys from 'Menu' and 'Calls' to 'phonebook' and 'messages' like you can in motorola phones?

2> Can you have contacts stored on both the sim and the phone and choose to display only one group? only SIM contacts, or only phone contacts?

3> Can you assign ringtones or call profiles for 'unknown', 'blocked' or 'private' numbers??

                                any help????

First of all, I bought the k790i the second day it was available, on ebay for a mere $450. At the time the closest competitor was the N93, easily upwards of $700. I was very impressed by the price of the k790i, it was far cheaper than I expected, and well worth the money.

                                        I soon later bought a 1 GB M2 card for $60 or $80, can't remember which.

                                        My review:

Overall excellent phone, best phone I have ever used.

Form - Form is great. Phone is very lightweight, far smaller than I excpected it to be judging from pictures, and is actually relatively thin, most of it's girth is from the raised bump that the camera cover creates, which are included in it's dimensions. Lightweight, fits in a pocket as comfortably as any phone.

Display - Display is an AMAZING improvement over the k750i. The high resolution screen easily shows extreme details, I am able to clearly read websites even with the tiniest font settings, and I can see the details very well in my 3.2MP pictures. Don't settle for anything worse, this display does not get nearly enough credit as it should.

Memory - Phonebook and organizer functions are excellent for a non-smartphone, everything that you could ever want is there for you, nothing is omitted. Phone can hold up to 1000 contacts, and each contact has a whole slew of details. I purchased a 1GB M2 card, and I highly reccomend anyone with this phone to get at least a 512 MB card - it really expands your options.

I am very happy with the built-in browser, I use it for regular browsing more than I use the Opera Mini browser (I use the Opera browser when I am doing picture-heavy browsing). You are able to use any of your MP3s (I have 150 songs in my phone right now) as a ringtone, or even play videos when someone calls. Features have plenty of depth and consideration, for example alarms can be set any way you want them to - there is space for about 10 different alarms, and they can be set to be recurrent, go off at only selected days of the week, play certain files, whatever you could imagine. Applications and organizer are definetly 10 out of ten.

Games are amazing, the mini-golf game that comes with the phone amazes everyone with it's insane 3D graphics. Sony Ericsson also has more free 3D games for download which are definetly worth it. I'm excited to see what developors can come up with these capabilities.

Lastly the camera is perfect, but there is enough said on that. Sure purchase, reccomend this to anyone.
