Sony Ericsson K800 review: Digicam in disguise

26 June 2006
Sony Ericsson K800 is one of the handsets we were so anxious to test that we could hardly wait for the phone to be brought in the office. Its highly advertised Cyber-shot camera made us as restless as kids on Christmas morning. Once we got it and before we started working on this review we spent a good deal of time experimenting with the exciting 3.2 megapixel camera. Not that we haven't seen a better camera, no! The thing is that this good camera just happens to be a good mobile phone, too.

First of all, I bought the k790i the second day it was available, on ebay for a mere $450. At the time the closest competitor was the N93, easily upwards of $700. I was very impressed by the price of the k790i, it was far cheaper than I expected, and well worth the money.

I soon later bought a 1 GB M2 card for $60 or $80, can't remember which.

My review:

Overall excellent phone, best phone I have ever used.

Form - Form is great. Phone is very lightweight, far smaller than I excpected it to be judging from pictures, and is actually relatively thin, most of it's girth is from the raised bump that the camera cover creates, which are included in it's dimensions. Lightweight, fits in a pocket as comfortably as any phone.

Display - Display is an AMAZING improvement over the k750i. The high resolution screen easily shows extreme details, I am able to clearly read websites even with the tiniest font settings, and I can see the details very well in my 3.2MP pictures. Don't settle for anything worse, this display does not get nearly enough credit as it should.

Memory - Phonebook and organizer functions are excellent for a non-smartphone, everything that you could ever want is there for you, nothing is omitted. Phone can hold up to 1000 contacts, and each contact has a whole slew of details. I purchased a 1GB M2 card, and I highly reccomend anyone with this phone to get at least a 512 MB card - it really expands your options.

I am very happy with the built-in browser, I use it for regular browsing more than I use the Opera Mini browser (I use the Opera browser when I am doing picture-heavy browsing). You are able to use any of your MP3s (I have 150 songs in my phone right now) as a ringtone, or even play videos when someone calls. Features have plenty of depth and consideration, for example alarms can be set any way you want them to - there is space for about 10 different alarms, and they can be set to be recurrent, go off at only selected days of the week, play certain files, whatever you could imagine. Applications and organizer are definetly 10 out of ten.

Games are amazing, the mini-golf game that comes with the phone amazes everyone with it's insane 3D graphics. Sony Ericsson also has more free 3D games for download which are definetly worth it. I'm excited to see what developors can come up with these capabilities.

Lastly the camera is perfect, but there is enough said on that. Sure purchase, reccomend this to anyone.

My k790i gets better everyday. There is no better phone on the market.

Undisputed champion of camera phones, and only phone with a real xenon flash. A must for people who use cameras socially and especially photobloggers.

See my photoblog, pictures within last 4 months are all taken and sent straight from my k790i. chrisppix.blogspot.com

If I was offered to trade my phone for any other, I would decline. No doubt about it. Get this phone.

The comparation made by de mobile review between k800 and n93 was made with the prototipe phones not with the final versions. The final version of the n93 camera is bad.I had N93 and K800 and the K800 makes the better pictures by far. That's true

Just had the ony Sony Ericsson K800 phone for a few days and already developed a problem; when the phone rang and I press ANSWER but nothing. my first idea was somebody is joking but then I tried to call my other phone and NOTHING is there to hear. after few minutes I called again and press SPEAKER ON and there was sound (fom back speaker not one where is VGA lens. I have not dropped my phone and decided to have my contract canceled for this phone due to recurring problems encountered with Sony Ericsson K800 by other people like myself and would like to know why their seems to be common problem with this.

"Even though I prefer the SE K800 for it's design I don't care wether tne nokia n93 has better features. If it has a mp3 player, a radio, a memory expansion slot and takes decsent pictures and videos I decide on style and price."
-------> the k800 does have a music player that plays mp3's, it does have a radio, and it definitely does have a mem stik expansion slot. i think the only advantage n93 has is with regards to its video recording function. no biggie.

"That's why I will wait for the SE k790 to become available wich will probably be cheaper because of the lack of secondary camera for video calling. Who actually uses video calling? I mean most my friend's mobiles don't even have a secondary camera, why spend more to buy a mobile that look exactly the same and just has an extra camera (I am talking about the SE K800 and K790."
--------> would you believe that 790 costs more than the 800? yep. over here in the phil k800 costs about 30 dollars cheaper than the 790. well, i dunno y. i dont get the logic. it's maybe coz of the edge capability of the 790.

My cousin came around with it the other day he thought it was great- good looking phone but i thought it not now after reading about the video capabilities of this phone. This should be just as good as the camera capabilities.

Just wondering if anyone know whether I could compensate exposure with flash in use. The compensation controlled by the joystick only works without flash.

I own a k800i. Bought it nearly 2 months ago. Here is my honest take on it.

                                    Pro:
                                    1) Excellent camera. Although some photos tend to be underexposed. And yes, the Xenon flash is really something to rave about. Its fantastic. Detrators can say what they want, but I dun care, its good.

                                    2) Good MP3 player. Nice features overall. Quite user friendly.

                                    3) Reasonably small and light. And it looks good to me.

                                    4) No software glitches so far.

                                    Cons:

                                    1) It hasnt happened yet, but I think my joystick will spoil eventually. Its starting to lose sensitivity.

                                    2) Coating of my keypad is starting to peal off. And i take quite good care of my phone.

                                    3) Not terribly customizable to individual preference as compared to my previous nokia phones.

                                    4) The speakers are good/clear. But im annoyed by the volume. Its freaking irritating coz u cant hear very well sometimes. It may be clear, but the maximum volume is pathetic. (probably my greatest annoyance with the phone)

OVERALL : No regrets buying it at all. Some problems, but hey, which phone is perfect. Personally, I would think only the N73 could rival it. But the k800i is about a 100 dollars cheaper, so I probably will still buy it given a second chane.

I rarely recommend phones to ppl, but I would say k800i most likely wont dissapoint u. Btw, its the first SE phone i used, i was previously all nokia, and this has got me noticing SE more. =)

Hope this feel u guys who are still on the fence.

                                        To Saitou

U are so right, N93 is overly huge, ugly overpriced and is not on the same league as any cyber-shot phone. Nokia's CZ lens is a gimmick. And if u didn't know, SE actually allowed Nokia the rights to use the CZ lens on their dwindling, over-populated n-series. N-series has no class, cos they are mass produced phones, with too many on the market...boring
