Motorola Moto X hands-on: First look

01 August 2013
It's been a while since Google bought Motorola but it's only now that we finally see the fruits of that cooperation. By this point, we were already overly excited because we couldn't wait to see what rabbit...

Btw spec wise, Moto-X is so 2000 and 12.

Google and Motorola both considered and unclided the exact two functions you request.

There's something more to success that Moto didn't consider: trust.
How many people these days trust Motorola as much as Samsung or Apple?

If you want to sell inferior hardware at superior price, you need an ARMY of fanboys promoting and generating sales for you. Last time I heard motorola wiped their fans clean with superior prices for inferior products only sold in USA, but I may be wrong and they beat Apple in pre-orders already...

Hoping to see Google edition for $300/350. Device without the price looks pretty attractive.

You care more about tha name and number of cores than acutal performance. I don't care much for benchmarks, but some tell more than others. Like the GLBenchmark 2.7 T-Rex and GLBenchmark 2.5 Egypt. Where this is on top, even when running 1080p off-screen. Considering it's main competitors run 1080p screen, this is currently the best gaming phone - for those who care about that. And why else care about benchmarking right?

eddie1021, 02 Aug 2013How could you not pick the HTC one over this? Other than th... moreWell, you've got me on storage, but a 32 gb Moto X is avilable for a little more money. The rest, though, is straight Moto X:

1080p on a 4.7" display is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of in my entire life. You already can't see pixels on 720p at 4.7", why do you want to burn up my processor and battery for no reason?

The processors are different--one cannot be said to be superior to the other. The Snapdragon 600 may be faster (not that you'd notice most of the time), but the X8 does things that the S600 doesn't do at all. You have to take that into consideration. Not to mention the graphics on the Moto look like they're considerably faster than on the One. To be honest, I'm not sure how they did that, since they're both labeled as using Adreno 320.

The dual front speakers--eh, I guess they're nice. My mom has a One, and they sound good, but the problem (at least for me) is that I never use my phone speakers to listen to music. That's what a good pair of earphones is for. After using my Sony XBA-BT75s, phone speakers, even the One's, are a bad joke. The only time they would ever come into play is when you're showing somebody something, or letting them hear a song, which frankly is just not that important to me. I don't care enough about my friends' auditory experience, I suppose. :)

The aluminum casing--I don't like it. Metal is a stupid material to use for a cellular phone, and aluminum is not good even for a metal. It's not RF-transparent, so the signal is not going to be as good as a plastic or glass phone. It dings and scratches easily, and once damaged, it's very obvious that it's been damaged. It's not even a very premium or attractive material. I throw about three aluminum soda cans into the trash every day. How premium can the stuff possibly be?

AnonD-79590, 02 Aug 2013And when did Motorola did exactly lead? The only phone I ca... moreMotorola invented the tech and was the leader from the get go. Dynatac might be to old series for you to know.

The RAZR serier did last over several years and for it's time it was leading on screen size, slimness - basically same things as today - only now it's HW race as well.

I don't really care who sells the most devices, as long as there is one that I like and can buy.

The X is a very nice device, but it's price tag (which my wife has set a fairly strict roof on) and availability makes it a difficult option. I don't know why Google does not care about the world outside the Americas, it just seems silly to ignore the rest like they do.

Right now, the Cherry Mobile Cosmos S is most likely going to be my next phone, unless those slow-moving Jiayu folks actually manage to launch their S1 anytime soon.

If I were to have two Moto X phones in the same room and said "OK Google Now, set an alarm for 6 am", wouldn't both phones set the alarm? Motorola and Google should have thought about this. They could have done one or both of these:
                              1. Replace "OK Google Now" with something each user can customize for his or her phone.
                              2. A slightly more difficult option would be for the phone to have voice recognition, so it would respond to the commands of just one (or some selected few) users.

I cannot believe they didn't consider this.

I was really looking forward to this phone but im really disappointed. I was expecting this phone to give people what they want. I dont need the stupid camera gesture, just give me a camera button like on the razr I. Everyone prefers to have an option to have additional storage if they need to, so why "do a google"?. Also the quick settings was a brilliant feature on the previous generation droids so why remove it when you're still not 100% stock android. Price is also crazy. The pricing is also ridiculous. The only thing I liked was the decision not to put 1080p screen since the difference is negligible.
In all cases, if this phone doesnt get released internationally its doomed to fail.

                                    Interesting device? - Nope!

The only cool part about this phone is the new active voice (actual really work or not is questionable) and also the new 10MP camera (actual result good or not also need wait real review out)

Others than above 2 points, this phone had nothing to impress and definitely not under consideration in buying list.

I will buy this customised with the sweet wooden back cover..... and then put on a cheap plasti casing to protect it. LOL just leave the color/customization to accesory maker.. This one is a fail in my book.. Better go with the droid series.. If only it offers customised internals.. I'd like to have a quad core with an extra core for simple tasks, 72 core graphics and an extra large battery..

Another fail from Moto. Does not even match bare minimum specs.
                                        pixel density is low.
                                        No SD slot.
                                        No FM radio
                                        Poor battery capacity.
I buy Moto only for its top music quality which beats everybody.

                                        Moto, common wake up.
