Nokia Lumia 1020 review: View from the top

21 September 2013
PureView is on its way down in history and while we loved the Nokia 808, it will be the Lumia 1020 that makes the name more than a footnote. With a modern OS and improved design of both the camera and the...

Any idea when there will be an update on the music quality? I need to know whether the headphone volume and quality is at least on par with an iPhone.

I have read on the Windows Central forum that Nokia have limited the volume so music is quiet - I hope this isn't true...

The problem with Nokia is they never ever think ahead. I love Nokia and I am a huge fan of Nokia. All my phones from 1st till now is Nokia. I still have N8 and the camera can still stand the best of time against the best out there, except maybe Nokia itself. However I am very disappointed why they never made this phone much better. For one, expandable storage. It is a given since we have a 41MP camera. You want to encourage people to take pictures and store them and not agonise over which one to delete. There's also the fantastic video camera and again no extra storage. The inability to change the battery. Why make it difficult? Then there's also the slow processor which by the time this phone is launched, it is a week from being obsolete.

The problem is Nokia seems to be looking to Apple Iphones for inspiration; with their bad habits of no extra storage, etc. Yes those Sky drive or Icloud whatever is great in concept but with a phone that boasts 41MP it means you want everyone to take pictures and to store it anywhere in the world and not everywhere has Wifi and not anyone can afford those expensive overseas data plans.

I feel ultimately disappointed for Nokia. They make great phones. My N8 is still looking great but now is too slow. What I love about my N8 were the extras; USB transfer, the HDMI converter all bundled into that package. This one, I see less bundled.

I am hoping the next release will make sense and thinks at least 1 year ahead. I know many sites such as this one has been predicting every phone as Nokia's last hurrah but I feel Nokia still has it. They are the only ones who makes phones which I am not scared of holding; the other day was holding Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and it felt to fragile. Nokia is sturdy. The hardware is top notch. It can be even better if it is designed for use after launch and not when they're creating it. As for software, as long as hardware is sturdy, software can always be upgraded.

Nokia, BUCK UP!!! I really want to buy this phone but after reading what it does not have, I have decided I shall change my N8's battery and wait for the next better phone, hopefully, even if it is not 41MP.

Nokia Lumia 1020 is one of the best Lumia phones that Nokia offered and that super 41 MP camera takes Lumia 1020 off the charts...

I do miss wireless charging very much on this phone to be honest. So for me the wireless charging cover will be a nice addition to my phone. The cameragrip for me personally is something I would only use during a holiday or a a day out or something like that. It looks bulky. Hope you can share your thoughts when you have used them!

Even if you choose to save all 12mb files you still have 32gb internal memory! That is enough for more than 2600 photos of that size! jesus christ, who takes that mmany photos without transferring and deleting as they g along?? And yes, I know that you don't have 32gb available, but maybe 29, but that still menas space enough for A LOT of photos of huge size!!

Compare the green gamma on Lumia 1020, N8 and 808: the oldest camera: N8 has the most natural colours. Hopefully if you shoot in reduced color, you'll be getting some green... (completely lacking here)

With 41mpix photos (about 12mb a shot) and with only 32gb and no way to expand, you will run out of space very shortly. I have 16gb in my phone and a 64gb card in it and have about 5gb left, so this phone would be a no go simply for that reason alone (that it runs WP would be another good reason) ;-)

There is a comparison tool between the 8mp Z1 and 5mp 1020 images too. Slightly more detail but way less noise.
38mp images are not useless by any means. You can go back and reframe it. That is simply not possible with any other phone. Or you can tweak it in Photoshop as you like, as you have so much raw detail to work with.
The images are superior on the 1020 in every way. Colors is a matter of preference . Some like natural, some punchier.
