Samsung aims to “significantly increase” sales of foldables for 2020

With the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Korean phone maker is on to something. A couple of weeks back, Samsung announced it aims to deliver 5 to 6 million foldable phones next year as demand increases for them.

Samsung’s AI forum kicked off a couple of days ago in Seoul where it discusses the development of future technologies. At the event, Samsung CEO DJ Koh confirmed that it would “significantly increase the sales of foldable smartphones next year”.

In recent leaks, we learned that Samsung would announce a new W20 clamshell phone that would feature a foldable display – as a successor to the China-exclusive clamshell Samsung flagship. Perhaps with the new W20 foldable clamshell, Samsung may expand its availability outside of China. Otherwise, it is believed to be announced sometime this month.

With the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the company faced challenges with the manufacturing process and even had to delay the launch of its nearly $2,000 smartphone for around half a year to improve the durability of the Galaxy Fold.

We are still some time away from mass production of thin, flexible glass – but until then, we’re excited to see the transition to a new form-factor and its great to see phone makers break away from the candy slab form factor.

Xiaomi, Huawei, and Motorola also have foldable phones on the way, the latter is expected to announce a RAZR reboot next week with a foldable clamshell display whose hardware resembles the iconic clamshell.
