you guys need to read before you post stuff. theirs been about 10 post on how to make a mp3 into a .3gp file so you can play it on your phone. READ!

this phone rocks. i have the t-mobile T809 and i love it, with the nokia multimedia converter you can covert avi and mpgs to 3gp format. in order to bypass the DRM licensing on mp3 ringers all you have to do is rename the file from .mp3 to .3gp before you transfer it to the phone and bam, you can make your own ringers.

I purchased the Samsung t-809 a few weeks ago from t-mobile, I am pretty much satisfied with the phone, but I have some dissatisfaction towards it. For one, t-mobile blocked a lot of good features of the this phone that the sgh-d820 version of this phone has, such as the Picsel viewer for office documents, the TV output, and I think that syncML was blocked because I installed the Samsung PC studio and it still wouldn’t let me synchronize my phone with the computer. I also think the phone should have came with more shared memory, and I don’t like the fact that the only media files the phone is compatible with are MP3/MP4/AAC/AAC+and 3GP files. You should at least be able to watch MPEG files on it because you can record an MPEG but you can’t put one on the phone or a memory card and watch it.
I do love a lot of features about this phone though. In my opinion this is by far the best phone released in the United States yet, it has the classiest, sleekest, and most innovative design out of all the other phones here. The phone is very light and comfortable to hold. The buttons and screen get smudged easily but look great when their clean and the buttons are wide and flat so they are comfortable for text messaging. The display is amazingly clear, the quality is unbelievable. The picture quality from the camera is amazing, it’s the best 1.3 mega pixel camera I have ever seen on a phone, I love all the features the camera has, like the effects, the photo settings, and the ISO settings and I also like the fact that you can edit the pictures directly on the phone. The video recording quality is excellent, and so is the voice recording quality. The MP3 music quality is superior to most phones I have seen, the stereo quality for both music and videos is great. The advanced messaging features come in handy. The data speed is very fast so you don’t have to wait long for sending data, using the web browser, or downloads. If you are able to convert downloaded video files from your computer to a MP4 an AAC or a 3GP and you have enough space on the phone then you could be able to watch a full length movie on the phone and I love that feature.
Overall I love this phone and I wouldn’t trade it for any other phone that’s available in the United States, it has some flaws, but its positive features make up for it.

I have the t809 and was wondering a few things. Does it support a 1gb micro sd? I put videos from my pc to the phone, but couldn't play them on the phone. Anything I need to do or is it pointless to try? I also noticed that it got a lil' hotter when i played mp3's. Is this normal or something to worry about? ps...this phone is sweet. Lot of compliments. Screen is awesome.

I recently got T809 T-mobile version of D820 after selling Motorola SLVR L7. First of all, This Sammy phone has really attractive design. Also, really excellent LCD display. I've never seen such a nice diplay. There is no flash with 1.3M camera. However, the lens f-stop # is f2.8 which means bright and fast lens. (I personally don't like flash in digital camera. Even with DSLR Canon camera and external speedlite which I own, taking portrait by using flash is very difficult subject if you want to take natural-looking people.) However, I wish to have flash not for picture but just flash in the darkness. Picture quality is acceptable. Dual speaker on the front is excellent. Speaker phone works great. No problem on connection to the phone with PC studio 3.0 via usb and bluetooth. I don't care about mp3 ringtone, but it seems that its feature is somewhat locked and it might be done only by downloading mp3 from t-mobile. As others said, converting mp3 to other format would be possible. Video recording works great. Good reception and good quality of sound. Volume from earpiece is good enough and speaker phone volume also great.
My complaint is about battery. Well, not too bad. When I called my friend yesterday, the continuous talk time was about 3.5 hours. After that, the battery was completely discharged. I wish to have longer battery time. I don't use mp3 much. If I use it as a phone, stand by time seems to be about 2 or 3 days. With using mp3 for about 2 hours a day, you may need to charge it every 1.5 days. But, it's O.K. for me. What I really like on this phone is superb display and design. It looks cool and goes well with casual as well as a kind of formal suit.

the tmobile version of this phone is garbage! get the unlocked and unbranded much better

You need to transfer the mp3 file into a 3gp file, because if u got this phone from t-mobile, they blocked that feature so u would have to buy ringtones from them.

i just want to thank all of you for writting up how to make your mp3 your ringtone. =D i finally figured it out and i love this phone even more
heres just some tips that i realized you must do or you cant make a mp3 a ringtone
1) use windows media player to convert a mp3 into a .3gp. go to file -> save as -> type the name of your song and type .3gp
2) you cant put the .3gp file into your phone. you must directly put it into your memory card so go to PHONE SETTINGS then USB SETTINGS then make sure its mass storage.
3) plug in the phone into the computer and go to MY COMPUTER and open up a "REMOVABLE DRIVE" or REMOVABLE DISK and their should be a folder that says MUSIC. and copy and paste your .3gp file their. after that unplug your phone and go FILE MANAGER (on your phone) -> MUSIC -> Memory Card -> Music and open the folder. you should now see your .3gp file and click options and set it as your ringtone

i converted my mp3's to a 3gp file and was able to play the file but when i tryed to set is as a ringtone it becomes mute. someone help

To use the mp3s as ringtones you need to convert the songs from .mp3 format to .3gp (I use windows media player). Open the song in Windows Meida Player and go to file and then Save As, after the name of the song (which cannot be more than 47 characters) type in .3gp and hit save. Then you will have the song in the phone's video format. You must use the memory card reader and transfer it directly onto the memory card, b/c the software that came with the Samsung will not even let you play it much less set it as a ringtone, if you transfer it directly onto the memory card everything will be fine. Play the song on the phone go into the menu and select "set as", for anything that's not in 3gp the ringtone option will be grayed out, but if it is done properly in the 3gp format then you will be able to select it as a ringtone for a contact. Hope this helps y'all.

dont call a phone the d820, sounding like an upgrade to the d600 , when well its not! for staters its missing 0.7 megapixels!lol

If you already have music on your computer and want to transfer them into your phone, do the following:
Plug in your phone with the USB to the computer.
From your music file folder, I'd recommend making a copy of the songs you want to add to your phone.
With the copy of the songs, change all extensions to .3gp
After doing that, select those .3gp songs and copy them and paste to the phone folder, which is normally (removable disk) on your my computer.

Purchased this phone from T-Mobile USA.
I'm returning it for these reasons:
1. Bluetooth is terrible. Won't stay connected to any of my three Bluetooth headsets. Bluetooth range is very, very short.
2. Buttons have very little feedback and hard to control as compared to the D500 (which I have).
3. Ear speaker sound fuzzy--as if the speaker is lose.
4. The slide is not easy to open and close as compared to the D500. The edged for the finger is too small.
5. Must change all MP3's to 3gp's to make them work as a ringtone.
6. Center function buttons are terrible and I keep pressing the "C" instead. Needs better feedback--like on the SLVR 7 or D500.
7. Keys are too cramped for texting. Again, better on the D500.
8. Menus colors and icons are better--and there is more options--on the D500.
I'll look at the D600. Hopefully it's better.
