                      Review: Samsung SGH-F480

                      'Appearance and Feel'
I first noticed this unit while trying out its full-scale model replica at one of the celphone stores. I just found it to be very intriguing, very high tech with its look and feel. It has almost no visible controls, and its like a smooth, shiny, flat object that is suddenly a celphone.

It is perhaps the most compact, bar-type touchscreen phone around, being 12.6 mm shorter and 3.9 mm thinner than the Nokia 5800. It is a bit wider, though, by only 3.3 mm, but overall the unit is a lot more compact.

With smooth, rounded corners all around, glossy finish on the sides and brushed stainless steel finish at the back, it is not only a great phone to look at, but even a greater phone to feel around also.

                      'Touchscreen and Camera'
Compared to the 5800, its touchscreen is better because you can use your fingers to scroll thru the menus as necessary, allowing for easier and faster scrolling.

One of its strongest points is definitely its camera. 5 megapixels, with facial recognition and smile-capture software. These features you usually only find in the latest digicam models nowadays.

Its flash is also pretty good, though not as bright as that on a SE K800i's Xenon flash, it nearly approximates it. Great for taking pictures at low light levels.

                      'Accessories'
The unit came with a couple of accessories, namely the charger, of course. Then a two-piece earphone, a PC Cable, and an alternate removable battery cover with integrated flip cover. I initially used this battery cover with flip, but later reverted to the plain battery cover as I found the flip to interfere with texting, and made the phone less "nicer" to feel around.

                      'Lack of Features'
My main beef about the phone, though, is its lack of features, especially when you consider the fact that Samsung is pricing it at the same level as the 5800. It doesn't have an accelerometer, for example, meaning you can't view the screen automatically on a landscape mode.

Neither does it have GPS capability, or Wifi, or even a proximity sensor (allowing for auto locking of the pads when making calls). In terms of text input, it only allows an alphanumeric touchscreen keypad, unlike the 5800 which allows you to enter by handwriting recognition and two QWERTY keyboards aside from the alphanumeric keypad.

Its screen display also is not as good as the 5800, only capable of 252k colors as opposed to the 5800's 16m. The pictures just don't appear as crisp and sharp as on the 5800. Its also 120 20 pixels or 0.4" smaller than onthe 5800.

And I haven't talked yet about the 5800's "Contacts Bar", or the customiability of its S60 v5 software yet. Bottomline is that the Samsung SGH-F480 is a pretty bare phone in terms of features outside of its camera.

                      'Final Verdict'
Despite its drawbacks, I do actually find myself preferring to carry it around more than the 5800. Its just a matter of opinion, I guess, it seems its advantages sort of outweigh the units disadvantages overall. Its just a terrific, outstanding phone to look at and feel around. I feel so high tech (ironically, despite its lack of features) when using it around.

It would be hard for me to imagine, though, having this as my main celphone. It is a nice second celphone to have, but if it is the only one you have, then I guess you would easily get tired of it because of its bare features.

With its lack of features, I think Samsung seems to be a bit overpricing this unit when they put it on the same price as that of the 5800.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this before but there is a version of this phone, the F480L, intended for Latin America. It is not the same as the phone reviewed here. I bought one thinking it was the same thing and here are some differences I found:

                        1. No 3G
                        2. 67MB internal memory (not 232MB)
                        3. According to the manual, support for only up to 2GB microSD (not 8GB)
                        4. The touch technology is different. The phone comes with a stylus (there is a slot for it on the phone) and doesn't respond as smoothly to your fingers as say an iPhone.
                        5. The F480L firmware doesn't have the animations of the F480 e.g. there is no flip when changing screens and widgets don't do that little bouncing thing when you drag them on screen.
                        6. Instructions for flashing the F480 do not work on the F480L (perhaps because the hardware is not the same).

Overall, I still like the F480L. The touch screen really isn't that bad as I almost never use the stylus.

Toto, 05 Jan 2009Hi Guys i want to buy F480 do u really recomend me to b... moreIt is a great looking phone but has two serious flaws which If I had known at the time would have purchased a different phone.

                                        1) Though it is a 5 Meg camera, it is rather poor. If lighting conditions are not completely perfect you will not get a particularly good image. The 2Meg camera on the Ipone provides a much more crisp image.

                                        2) The web browser does not have compression technology so you have to scroll up and down and across the screen constantly to see a full web page. With the two websites I specifically want to use I have to enlarge the page view to be able to get the buy/sell buttons to respond to touch. On one of them, no matter how much I expand the screen, I can not see the pricing data that I require.

I also cannot seem to turn off the keyboard sound without turning off the ring sound so if anyone has any ideas on that?
Also, I can't advise on the music capability of this phone as I do not use it as an MP3.
