I have the phone since september of 2020 (bought used and refurbished from marketplace). I would say it is a very good phone at almost everything. Its only lacks are its camera, back glass durability (broke in half a month since I bought it) and the fingerprint sensor (there is one at the home button). I have rooted the phone and I use a one ui custom rom I found on XDA. I can say I am satisfied because for €100 I got something that is way beyond the budget deals on most shops

Looks like this isn't going to be a good option for LineageOS users. At least for current plans it seems VoLTE support on Exynos is a no-go. I would assume if they support any Exynos devices with 5G then 5G may be ok for voice calls, but 4G voice calls are not currently possible.
Hopefully they do fix this as it affects a very wide range of devices (not just this one) but for now if you like LineageOS, avoid Exynos 4G devices.

I use this for streaming sport sport/tv/movies and casting to my TV its solid if you don't update the latest version of android. Older versions run pretty fast. Latest versions are painfully slow

I have been using this phone for over four years and it's been the best bang for the buck for any phone I ever owned. I never use flagships, because I keep dropping my phone, and I have dropped this one may be over 200 times on all kind of surfaces and it still works ( I don't like phone covers/protectors. so it had nothing on it).
It is a bit outdated now, do if you are looking for a worthy successor to a5, I would suggest galaxy a 52.

Anonymous, 30 Oct 2021Was it worth buying in 2021?... I have been using s7 edge ... moreProvisionally. The stock OS is super outdated and lacks some pretty serious security updates since the last official update, so I recommend against it if you aren't willing to install a third party OS. However, that said, if you install LineageOS you get Android 11 (latest available to normal phones) and probably 12 when it's widely available with all the latest security patches. If you don't go nuts with apps it still actually runs pretty smoothly and has a pretty good battery life -- though these were made in 2017, so the batteries are getting a little older and maybe don't do as well as they ideally should. Of course, that said, if you're experiencing battery life problems it is, often enough, because of the apps you're using (look into rooting and then using stuff like Greenify and installing fewer apps that do background activities in particular, but screen on time is the worst battery killer on all smart devices) and you could potentially find this one worse depending on your usage. That said, I get great battery life on mine for the most part with the way I use it.
Given that you can pick these up dirt cheap these days, if you're willing to install a third party ROM I would say that they are potentially quite a good buy. The 2017 A5 is very capable for an "economy" model phone with a quite good processor, decent amount of RAM, etc.
One point to check up on though: it seems many networks are migrating to VoLTE only (that is voice over LTE, so basically using a data-like connection over 4G for voice calls.) From what I can tell just supporting LTE doesn't guarantee a phone supports VoLTE though. I use Tracfone and their site sent an automated message saying my phone doesn't support VoLTE, but their site also doesn't recognize some other features of my phone (possibly because in theory the stock OS would be too limited to do many of those things, but then of course I'm not using the stock OS.) I've been googling and I *think* that the phone hardware does support VoLTE, but I can't actually verify this. If you plan to use it on a network that goes to VoLTE only it may not work for voice calls over that network if this is the case. Though of course even if that happens it is still possible to use software that makes calls via WiFi+data such as Google Voice. I wish I could tell you for sure on that point, but then I found your question in my search to verify whether or not it can do it as it is.

I have had this phone for 4 years and it's been an awesome phone! Battery life is still great and it's still seems pretty fast to me. Still have 7GB of space. Will definitely be buying a new Samsung soon. I will never go back to Apple!

I had this phone laying around the house not being used so I thought I'd see what I could do with it. I've installed /e/ foundation's rom onto it and I'm currently running Android 11 as my daily driver now. Not the fastest phone but I'm running pretty much the latest Android that is degoogled
