AnonD-371222, 05 Mar 2015i have not bought this phone yet but i will be in a couple ... moreHmm specs don't make a phone a phone..
Phones are devices that allow us to connect to the world around us. They do a range of things, and, true, they are also a lifestyle choice that some buy for 'bling' factor.
If seven phones all had identical specs, it would be their build qualities that seperate them, yes?
I like laptops with nice keys. Keyboards don't make the spec sheet (its not the 'numbers' consumers are comparing).Neither do hard drive spin speeds make the 'quick compare' sheet, yet the speed of the storage drive, in a laptop is probably one of the biggest usability shaping aspects of said laptop.
Again, manufacturers sell to us based on the numbers we appear to be looking at.
Eg when it became apparent consumers wanted IPS panel LCD screens, they started pairing IPS panels with cost cutting 6bit processing chips (the ones that guess their way up to 16million colours from their actual two hundred thousand odd..).. consumers didn't care cause they knew if the screen was IPS it was better colour!
So I say, use your own senses to detect if a laptop creaks and flexes.. check if the keyboard is actually nice to type on. Oh and look at the screen! (for reflections and update speed and moving resolution and colour accuracy etc etc)
Anyhow specs don't tell the whole story. The new S6 uses a funky new high speed low power ram setup. using external SD memory with its range of speeds, mostly crap, is not useful for 4K video recording.
Samsung taking some complaints for not having expandable memory is better than bad reviews from users who plug in their fake 128GB SD cards and which in turn causes all sorts of issues that will mostly go undetected on the ten second warranty claim phone call.
Also, multiple memory cards suck more power.
They have done the right thing by offering a wide range of differing memory configurations in the phone.
Users just don't get it, and it is easy to get caught up in a complaint bandwagon. We are, after all, sheep(ish).
Again, the battery isn't an issue. For many. I know I have never replaced the battery on any device I have. With the exception of a Dell Mini 9 Netbook aftevr four years- the girlfriend had poor battery maintenance strategies.. hers gave thirty minutes of runtime (mine still gave 4+ hours, but had lost 20%, true).
The only other instance was a Dell XPS laptop that used 'intelligent' chips on its batteries. I had set windows to not sleep until 2% battery left, and one day I killed the battery, with no remaining charge.. and the laptop would not recognise the battery and therefor would not charge it. This issue only existed because Dell didn't want third party batteries on its laptop and tried to create a system to stop this.. Anyhow, that battery, true, needs replacing.
I do have a Galaxy S phone that has an extended battery as well as the standard battery, but I cannot think of a time I needed to 'swap' one to the other.
Enclosed battery, being well built and huuuge, on a device designed to sip power, should last quite a few years before it loses, say, 10% of total recharge capacity.
Given the high end phone buyers seem to buy and upgrade every three years, I think Sammy did the right thing.
They can now compete with top tier handsets from a design perspective. With a nice well built rigid case.
For the record, I like when we dropped our old Nokias they fell apart to five pieces.. this took the impact and spread the force. Those things lasted (I still have some in a drawer somewhere, albeit with dead batteries no doubt)
I am sure, if needed, a service centre could upgrade an old battery for one of these new phones.
The origional purchaser will not care for the process by this time.

Anonymous, 05 Mar 2015Why would I lie if you read properly I am writing from my ... moreFirstly I didn't accuse you of lying.
I do have respect for others opinions, something I think your posts are treading a grey area on..
I tried hard to ascertain why you might be having said issues..
As you have offered nothing further to progress this, and seem to want to bicker, or act like this is personal,.. then sure, I write this off to trolling, as you are on a thread for a phone that has nil to do with your listed experience.
I did suggest that your timeframe with the Nexus 6 may not have allowed it to 'settle' that is; that the battery had not had a few charge cycles to find its real ability, nor in a few days (likely two charges) had you finished downloading system updates and installing software. Which Android then optimises older Davlik runtimes for use with Art, these things chew CPU once,.. and then offer better battery life for the long run.
I feel if you had spent two weeks with the Nexus you may have had something worth contributing..
The words you used to describe Android battery life suggests you are writing from an emotional perspective, and whilst you now qualify you haven't had an iPhone since four, and are not a 'brand loyalist', I no doubt feel you have aspects of 'buyers remorse' going on.. why else would you be on a Galaxy Note thread writing these things..
I put to you if you were truly happy with your new iDevice, you would be out there in the world living and having it supplement the joy of living in whatever ways it offers.
Certainly that is why I have a phone with a range of features that supports my lifestyle.
Whilst I do miss the days of phones lasting a week from a charge, phones from the nineties had monochrome screens an inch big with considerably less backlight at very low resolution so we really only used them for calls.
If I could restrain myself to only use my phone for calls I would get three days plus from it.
This is neither here nor there-
You are here with gripes.. I heard your opinion, suggested I had some qualms with it, and went on to suggest some usage scenarios of the device in the limited time you had it to give reasons why your usage may have different from online comparisons of the same devices which were contrary to your experience.
I am sorry if you are not totaly happy with your newest piece of tech, on what has clearly been a learning journey for you..
perhaps, if you could listen to others, and hear what they are saying or implying you might learn even more things.. learning through others experience, vicarious learning, is rare, but it really does add so much in terms of knowledge we can gleam.
I put to you that I am an excellent listener, a learned technologist, and a capable assistant for helping anyone with their inquiries; hence, in attempting to do 'right vocation', I volunteer my time here writing to help others.
But, the world needs burger flippers and I am not the judgemental sort. I would be more than happy to flip burgers if it put food on the table for my daughter and in anyway allowed me to further growth of the human race towards the light.
I'd clean toilets too.
Whatever..
Can we get along now?
Perhaps- if you feel you have some information to offer, it could become part of a discussion; that others here might choose to talk with you.
If you do just want to lecture though, and inform others without interest in hearing from others, or take onboard research from the globe, .. why not start a webpage and people can subscribe or 'hit' you.

Wow; like my posts are not big enough!
double post is because my big posts don't pop up on the specs page.. (I don't jump straight to 'Read Opinions').. having not seen it was up, given I goofed up editing it, and the webpage claimed I ran out of time... I did what I could to save it and get it up.
Not that I think it holds a lot of worth, but when I go to that much effort to write something...
(I researched the statement that a Nexus 6 couldn't hold a candle to other big battery phones due to it running Android).
It amazes me how many people jump on specific threads for OTHER phones to try and educate other people to stay away.
In this case, I am guessing the writer intends to warn people away from a Note Edge because they have had poor battery life with a Nexus 6.
Cool story bro
Umm thanks for your concern for saving the masses.
Kinda worries me when saving the masses requires people to buy the one item that is bought simply due to branding.
Don't get me wrong.. I believed OS X was the best OS to happen to the world, and I love that people are more productive in an Apple ecosystem (desktop OS).
Personally you couldn't pay me to update my devices through iTunes, therefore I won't own said devices.
I like my freedom(s)

Anonymous, 04 Mar 2015I agree with your comment but unfortunately I have bought a... moreI have a few qualms with what has been written here...
The two compared to devices are phablet class devices with large battey life and very expensive pricepoints where costs are not spared (big batteries add cost and space)..
the nexus 6 is a cheaper pricepoint item (I could be wrong), I know for awhile Nexus devices were meant to be flagship class devices, but by about the Nexus 3 or 4 they werent even using gorilla glass, and it was obvious the Nexus lineups sole marketing aim was faster OS rollouts.
Sure it has a huge battery and an OLED screen (black screens power sip, white screens power drain)..
According to techradar the 'project volta' benefiting Nexus was more power efficient that the iphone you reference using their battery drain tests.
I know windows phone is a very light power consumption OS, and the latest apple OS finally allows programs to share data, which will aid in usage of the devices for more than one thing at a time.
Windows OS is heavy handed at closing apps and keeping memory empty. iOS whilst being 64bit; I am unaware of how truly 'multitasking the OS is'. I do believe all Apple apps would be upgraded to the new handoff model that makes software seem more connected... but neither iOS or Winphone are capable in the same way that Android OS is.
So sure, when running lots of software on an Android device, displaying a pure white screen at full brightness you may have yielded less runtime than the Apple phablet, but that is a hardly fair comparison ("apples with oranges" if you will!).
I would defer to the techradar article for a good example of battery life usage for those three devices.
I will agree that win mobile sips power, but unfortunately as a tech the amount of tbings the OS cannot do (eg I need to install drivers to use a winphone as a modem for a windows pc, an issue when I need it as a modem to get drivers for the wifi chip on said windows pc.. (an android phone just works by the way)).
Not sure if your experience is reflected by many users or if you switch hardware so quick that the batteries havent had a few charge/recharge cycles and 'found their stride'.
I put to you that the usage habits were not equal and that you were probably doing more than you give credit to doing on the Android device.
according to techradar the nexus ate the note 4 and a note 4 eats my note edge (and my note edge gives me a full day of usage everyday no matter my usage). The notion of an extra half day of power is meaningless to me as it creates more problems than the blessing is worth/ a moot point.
charge at night or in the morning, not lunchtime every other day!!

RIZWAN, 26 Feb 2015i have just bought it i have 2 issues 1 searching on wi... moreI agree with your comment but unfortunately I have bought and changed over dozen phones all top end snatch ones and I have switched from android as the culprit is the android software. I had the nexus 6 battery life was so pathetic I sold it after a few days as is the case withe the samsung phones and any other phones in the market today using android. The lumia 1520 and the iPhone 6 plus which I am currently using seem to have an amazing battery life. All things put aside if the battery life is poor you will eventuallybhatebusingbthe phone unless one likes to carry a charger all the time. If android does not sort this out you will see sales plummeting no matter of the make and that is why today Apples sales are through the roof.

Tcool, 03 Mar 2015No problem with the back, there is always a better cover to... moreDisasters..
Hmm Perhaps this word means different things to different people.
Whilst I have yet to encounter much in the way of phones with 'disastrous' outer surfaces.. I can confirm that I have owned phones that just WANT to slip out of the hand.
And when an expensive device is hard to hold it is sad watching it fall. Cause when things go wrong we want to blame someone,.. and if the back of my phone was slippery; I would blame the manufacturer..
But the Note lineup isn't slippery.
It has a nice texture/tactile feel.
My friend who uses a Note 3 uses a toothpick to clean around the faux stitching. I am glad they removed the stitching for the Note 4!
A pet peeve I have with modern electronics is that we often put them in cases.. eg laptops. Why not build them into a durable outer shell as it increases battery space etc?
The Note 4s practically require an outer case due to the raised lense.
I like phones that have slide over covers for the lens elements. This feature is rare. Instead we are getting more and more phones with protruding lenses.
So I use the Samsung flip case (It has the S-chip and activates the phone when opened.),.. now the lens is protected from table surfaces etc when I put it down.
I find Samsungs choice of materials to be quite decent, as they DO NOT slip from the hand.
Disastrous? I don't think so..

Wow a few days without anyone complaining, criticizing, or even overly commending!
Figured I would add something just to make sure the thread is functional.
I post as Whitedragem and when I can't log in as, Whitedragon (a nick I would have taken everywhere if it wasn't in short supply, so Whitedragem it is!!), and even an 'anonymous' post or two when I can't log in.. (the s6 edge compare 'novel' a week ago).
Alright, so having flashed Samsungs Lollipop 5.0.1, and given a week or more to 'stabilise'; I can confirm battery life has been exteneded (negligible, but for those saying otherwise, I put to them; check running software)
Things are much more responsive. There is still a third of a second 'lag' when bringing up the multitasker wheel (anything outside of an I7 with gigs of ram I would expect to do the same when it hasn't preloaded all the images).
This phone is a veritable powerhouse. It does everything perfectly.
Okay 'Baldurs Gate' is missing water and lava textures; something which plagues many Adreno video chipsets. Beamdog software blame many things, but anyone saying that the game is flawless, it is pretty good, but for those who played these games (Icewind Dale, BG + BG2) back in the day.. Still work to be done on the engine for Android!
Over this last weekend I made several two hour drives to the major city nearby. This involves moments of no reception. Also in town, there are hundreds of wifi hotspots etc.. My phone had good reason to get tired. It supplied audio via bluetooth to the car stereo (Five hours total). I reviewed fitness trackers etc when in the city via my phones 4G telephony. I took tonnes of photos using the camera. I UV monitored and GPS navigated, and just used the phone like I could.
Each day I had around 50% power left in the evening.
I consider these days regular usage, not heavy usage.
On any other phone (not phablet) I would expect my phone to be drained, and would purposely go light to keep my phone usable.
My phone was in near constant usage.. and I could easily get two days (technically two days and one night) out of my phone using it as it is needed. Phones just wouldn't to a day.
To be fair, I do charge in the evening.. sometimes I quickcharge in the mornings.
Phone batteries should be recharged before getting below 20%. When they get to 10% remaining, we are robbing them of half as many recharges. This is to say, draining phones to 3% is not good practice. (I used to hook a lightbulb off the terminals on my old siemens and nokia batteries in the early ninties to remove 'memory effect').
I can confirm that my phone, with wifi on, will never drain 12% an hour, whether away from networks, or surrounded by tonnes of them (I set home as a hidden network - so my phone works pretty hard from a wifi standpoint.
On Saturday I added a Samsung Fit to my lineup.
I wanted a small piece of kit that could fitness track and have a few days of life... (mostly for sleep monitoring).
The software is a joke to setup initially. In fact it hosed all my s-fit data for the last three months in the Edge.
But it is a nice addon.
Doesn't quite do everything perfect.. like I can only skip tracks but not change albums when driving in the car/ using the 'media control'.
I can set a double touch of the side button to jump straight to a dedicated app (media control in my case) and then set regular button to either return to last used, or, as I prefer, the time screen. I chose the one which gives weather as well.
Black background naturally (It is OLED).
The present price makes them a real bargain.
(around half of launch price if I am not mistaken)
I find the Edge a great phone.
Clear microphones. Nice speakerphone. Loud ringtone etc. (funny how not all 'phones' are phones first anymore!)
All the extra fruit is just a massive bonus.
Sure it doesn't have the projector built in like some samsung phones have. It doesn't have a physical keyboard which I way prefer to use. It doesn't have stereo speakers on it for media player use. (though it does have excellent quality sound either via the 3.5mm jack or via bluetooth)
It is an excellent purchase, its only caveat is the size and potential delicacy that all large screen phones have over 3"(and smaller) screens. To be fair, I have friends who crack the screens on 2" displays and I have seldom so much as chipped fascias on most of my electronics (I dropped my Vita out of a car at one point and roughed up a few edges on it).
I bought my Edge on a plan, because it worked out like a nearly free phone.
For the last decade I have been off contract, preferring to buy top of the line phones outright, then going to whichever prepaid deal gave me what I needed. I liked the freedom and flexibilty that this method offered.
I did lament the 'free phone' every two years that contract buyers had.
For me the Note 4 vs Note 4 Edge was a negligible price difference on contract.. so I do not feel the Edge was a costly premium.
I do prefer the using of it though.. portrait webpages fitting noticably more onscreen that the Note 4 as an example.
I dig the colour accurate screen, excellent sound, and huuuge battery life. Phablet class phones having the biggest on-screen keyboards, I think this is a benefit as well.
The super low SAR of this phone suggests to me it has excellent antennae design. My usage in the last three months confirms this belief.
On the whole, every few years, something new comes along that changes the market.
I did think a few years ago of running a tablet with a sim, and using a bluetooth headset for calls..
This Phablet is nice enough to use I didn't grab a fitness monitor with microphone/speaker (eg Sony SWR30), and I don't use my BT headset as often as I would with any other phone due to the greatly reduced SAR that this model has.
Happy using peoples.
Whilst unhappy customers go trawling the net, happy customers get on with life and the using of their products.
I feel Edge users make for pretty happy campers. Note users in general too.
Samsung Gear Fit is nice and small. Perhaps I am using a later version of the unit, but it is nice and accurate, and a joy to use.
I think I have had one day where I recharged my Note Edge after seventeen hours use, because it had gotten lowish battery and I like to recharge ASAP. It doesn't count though, because it wasn't fully charged to begin with, and I flashed a new OS on it, and upgraded all its apps etc. And then proceeded to use it like crazy testing it out. I still had to sleep at some point, so as a phone it has always outlasted my needs, and I have never gone easy on it to leave me with some battery power for 'later on' (I have never engaged any of the low power use modes either).
So anyone who gets a Note 4 over the Note Edge just because of the battery discrepancy.. educate yourself about 'real world usage'.
These things are awesome and in no way 'inferior'.
;-)

Early Life Failure.
Go back to your retailer and swap the phone over for a properly working unit.
In the modern world it is unusual for any product to have perfect quality control and for all supplied parts/chips to work perfectly.
We are not buying jet planes or life support equipment.
This is mass market stuff. (as all phones are)
There used to be some PC shops in my country that would benchmark and run the PCs they sold for a few days prior to the sale to try and confirm that said machine was faultless.
More than a decade ago, top tier electrical goods similar policies in place prior to being shipped.
Some luxuary parts, eg audio amplifiers ship with 'test reports' to confirm actual performance of the actual unit we receive.
We pay a premium for this service/standard.
Unfortunately, when companies try their hardest to shave a few cents here and a few cents there from the total cost; stuff like sample testing (eg a few units every thousand) is the best we get.
How long since you bought a PC that came with manuals or install media?
Exactly.
We want low cost, we get what we ask for!
Yes, I admit, the Note Edge is expensive when compared to other phones, but it is still very cheap for the market tier it represents.
Most of my high end phones used to cost 1/3 higher again.

RIZWAN, 26 Feb 2015i have just bought it
i have 2 issues
1 searching on wi... more14% an hour seems unlikely.
I suggest something more 'sinister' is going on to lead to that much battery drain.
I run hidden wifi networks, and leave my phones wifi on all day. And am out of wifi service zone for hours at a time quite often.
I have heavy usage of phone most other times, running middle screen brightness and auto, doing much webbrowsing and leaving all programs running...
This could be an extension of your second point.. the screen flickering..
This could be related to auto brightness, where, when brightening up the screen, a close surface to the phone (or your hand near the 'auto' sensor) starts to reflect the light.. the auto sensor changes brightness,.. to which the refelctive surface changes light value, and the process go on like a loop.
I suggest turn off 'auto' brightness adjust. And confirm whether this is part of the issue.
Otherwise there could be a fault at some level with the battery.
CPU-Z (play store) has a bunch of sensors in it,. you might be able to look at some temps and figure out if everything is running right.
(Also if all your cores are fired up, and at what speeds).. my phone seems to spend a lot of time using only two cores around 300Mhz. Sometimes it peaks around 1300Mhz, and sometimes, it will load up to full speed on two cores, and half speed on other cores for a few seconds to really churn through something,.. when doing light phone activities.
If your phone, doing nothing, shows hot battery temps, and loaded cores,.. then we have an issue!
Also, when we flash a new ROM or OS variant, it can take a few charge cycles for the phone to normalise itself and figure out where it really is with regards to battery power. Until it normalises it is hard to tell how fast it is ripping through the power.
