Literally every other competitor has thinner bezels, punch hole displays and/or curved screens compared to Samsung, and it's not like their premium phones get butchered by sales of their budget ones. It shows that Samsung's budget phones are years behind in terms of design, and they should be ashamed of that.

Anonymous, 23 Aug 2024Here’s a quick education on some fundamentals. It’s very wo... moreSuddenly my Redmi Note 13 Pro with a 6.67 inch display (89.8% screen-to-body ratio), 6.35 inch height, and 6.60 oz weight doesn't feel so heavy and oversized at all compared to Samsung's budget phones.

Hell, even the iQOO Z9 (China), which costs $260 managed to fit a 6000mAh battery on a device that's 8mm thick and 6.88 oz in weight, that's like 0.3mm thinner and 0.06 oz lighter than the Galaxy A25.

The Chinese are way ahead of Samsung in terms of engineering and it shows.

The back glass on my S24 has loosened up from the top so it is slightly popping open with a gap. It moves easily if I pick on it with my fingernail. Since then, I'm using a back case to hold the glass in place. Can anyone please suggest how to fix this? I can't really leave my phone at a service centre since I depend on it for my livelihood.

I would just add that Samsung is one of the worst, if not the worst when it comes to putting giant bezels in budget phones. Ugliness is a secondary concern. The main problem is the fact that it needlessly makes the device bigger and heavier. And as you point out, it can easily be avoided.

Here’s a quick education on some fundamentals. It’s very worth the read.

                        First, let’s define the terms:
“Device size”: length from top to bottom of device itself.
“Display size”: screen size measured diagonally, usually bigger than device size.

                        Examples:
S24 Ultra: 6.8 inch display, 6.39 inch device
S24 Plus: 6.7 inch display, 6.24 inch device
                        S24: 6.2 inch display, 5.79 inch device

                        Conclusion:
Device can be a half inch smaller than display without sacrificing anything.

So why is the gap between display and device size in budget phones much less? Because of useless bezels i.e. dead space around the screen that just contributes to a bulkier device size for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON. The most egregious example is the A14 with a 6.6 display and 6.6 device size due to its gigantic bezels. Remove that dead space and you’re left with a more manageable 6.2 inch device. The A15 is somewhat better, but the gap is still 6.5 to 6.3. The A55/A35 are slightly better, with a gap of 6.6 to 6.34/6.37, but they can also be 6.2 inches.

But will the battery fit? Well, the 6.23 inch A54 clearly shows a 5000 mAh battery fitting into 6.2 inches. So why are bezels added? To purposely stick it to budget customers! It’s not like the manufacturer has to go out of their way and do anything extra for budget customers, just DON’T ADD dead space!

You may ask: “What’s a few tenths of an inch already?” Well guess what, the difference between a compact device and a big bulky one is often less than an inch. So in phones, every tenth of an inch makes a real difference.

Weight is also a problem. As an example, the S24 Plus is 6.91 oz. So why is the A15 - 7.05 oz, the A14 - 7.13 oz, the A55 - very heavy at 7.37 oz, and the A35 - an astounding 7.51 oz! The A13 seems to manage just fine at 6.88 oz. And when you’re holding a phone for a while, you can bet that those ounces (or grams) add up to tire and/or hurt your hand!

Bottom line: in addition to the discussion of producing actual compact phones that are affordable which should absolutely be done, today’s budget phones can be more manageable IN THEIR CURRENT FORM if their useless dead space and extra weight is removed.

Today it's almost impossible to get such phone size in a mid-ranger. So I'm considering xperia 10vi, iPhone 14 or 15, galaxy s23 or s24. The smaller pixels are also in that range. Of all the mentioned phones, the cheapest one is xperia (the lowest price I found is 350Eur), but the hardware is hardly worth that price.

Can't get a new 6" phone for below 300Eur today.

Previously I had an s10 and before that an s8 and s6 and also s4 so obviously the size suits me. My wife has an iPhone13 which is about the same size as my s23 so obviously that size suits her also. The plus size phones are just too big for me, awkward and slightly heavy to fit in your pocket.

The thing is a joy to hold and I love the build quality, but I hate the limited 32GB storage, miniscule 3000mAh battery, and just how laggy it is for even the most basic tasks.

Eventually I had to switch to a Galaxy A33. Although I wasn't sure of the bigger size at first, I eventually got used to it and just never looked back at wanting a compact phone ever again. The bigger screen is nicer to look at and gives a more immersive viewing experience for media consumption.

One thing I can agree on is how bulky Samsung's budget phones are getting. Chinese manufacturers are trimming down bezels and thickness year by year, Samsung's doing it too, but only for their flagships. For their budget phones, they're doing the opposite; thicker bezels and thicker phones every year, for what? I think their engineering is behind the times.

Here are some options, each probably representing a certain percentage of small phone lovers:
                                        1) They’ve been forced into buying a big heavy budget phone that they hate because it hurts their hands and weighs down their pocket. But what can they do? They can’t afford the expensive compact S phone.
                                        2) They’re holding on to their older compact phones, despite not receiving any security updates for a long time already.
                                        3) They abandoned Samsung (really it’s Samsung that abandoned them) and got one of the smaller Pixel phones from the last few years, especially during the multiple discounts that went on.
                                        4) They purchased secondhand/refurbished small S phones, though many people would never do that, as there are many risks with secondhand electronics.

Presumably, the biggest number of people did option 1, then option 2, etc.

These people would gladly buy a new compact A-series phone should it be made available.
