Maybe you have programs in background processing.. You should search for instant messaging software, one that comes in my mind is fring. Make sure you get the right os version. You can also search in the internet security manager software that allows you to install any software despite is the software signed or not.

Unchecking the integrated GPS did not help much. Battery life is still low. I had another query. Can we load the conversation software onto the phone. It comes preloaded on Nokia S60 phones.I tried but it said certificate error. Or do we have an alternate software?

update..
my i550w has been on standby for 68 hours now (almost 3 full days) and the battery bar is 4 (out of 7)
test condition :
- after *#7370 reset, no apps installed
- GSM only (3G switched off)
- integrated GPS switched off
- few minutes call and few sms each day
- without connecting to the internet
after this, i think i'll add internet connection test (via GPRS and wifi) and see how long the battery lasts.

ok, i bought and sold between a month...
to solve batterylife sucks problem, i need off 3g,and all others watever functions which need more energy..and choose a totally black color themes and dack wallpaper, and put the phone color lighting& contrast to the lowest... and every few hours and b4 picking up a call must check the battery level...
thats the situation to use a so called latest HP... after weeks, i pay the quality status money and i got limited myself as using $50 handphone... imagaine it u will get frustrated...
it is not battery problem as replace with a new battery, same things happen... and this is not software problem either... minimise usage off application only can help improve abit....
guys, IT IS TOTALLY A ERROR AND PROBLEM OF HARDWARE ITSELF!!
solution: refer my choice!!

after resetting (using *#7370#) and disabling integrated GPS and without installing any applications, my battery life increases very very significantly.
before.. my battery cannot last 24 hours even with lightest use
and now.. after 43 hours of standby and light use (few SMS, few minutes call) the battery indicator bar only drop 1 bar (6 bars left, from yesterday till today).
i expect the battery will last for 3 whole days or even more.
few suspicions on hungry battery consumption..
1) integrated GPS as Jammer said
2) Garmin application or other applications that stay resident on memory
i am still running some tests.. hope to finally find out what causes this problem.

Hope my batte... moreYou can record your calls using third party software (e.g. http://total-recall.en.softonic.com/symbian)and what comes that wifi and battery consumption, I cannot say if there is any third party software that allows you to tweak the signal strength so the child would take less power. And remember that if you find a way to decrease the wifi chip power, it'll affect the signal sensitiveness also.

I have deactivated integrated GPS. Hope my battery lasts longer. I have 2 queries. First one being how do we record a call on the i550? and second being the battery consumption is horribly high when WLAN is on. Is there some setting to decrease that also?

I am interested in your comment. I realized ... moreI meant that you should un-check the integrated gps in settings where you can select integrated, bluetooth gps or assisted gps. I can't say for sure that the gps-chip is active despite if there are any software utilizing it or not, but I noticed that disabling it completely will increase battery life significantly. If I need the gps, I simply activate the integrated method in system settings. Hope I made myself clear.

I tried jammer's advise and it works. My battery life increase significantly. I love this HP, all fatures works properly: GPS, wifi, etc!

the most suck is i thot low bat is due to the battery is of low quality and bought a new original to replace it...
all in all waste my money of this succcccccccccccccccck hp.

if u feel good to get yr hp battery charge PER-DAY/ less then u can go for it!
if no call/ no sms/ dont play any programe wit it can last 2 days, then wats the purpose u not TOUCH the hp just to sustain the bat life??
i experiance the sucks and sold it immediaty after days(i try discharege and recharge things many times wont work better)....
