People that say this is a great phone need to use it first. I find it funny how the people that praise it aren't the ones that have used it yet. I almost feel sorry for you because you don't know what you are getting.

Following what I wrote, I decided to give up and not keep the i600. The fact that it kept dropping calls and then freezing up was annoying. I also found a new problem - the keys LOCK. After a phone call, when you try to hang up, it doesn't. The phone just freezes. You are constantly connected. I had to turn the phone on and off to end the call (and once even had to pop out the battery).

Also, please note this is a WM5 Smartphone version not a real WM5 so you can't do things like edit documents. It just doesn't work the same. The P990 has been out for awhile and I'm sure it too has issues, but the i600 isn't great. If you want a real smartphone go buy one. The HTC/O2/Dopod are real smartphones (I've had many) and you have plenty to choose from.

Lastly, yes the software is full of bugs and the other writer seems to have the same problem I had. It's not the network or your SIM card (I'm a telco guy) - it's the phone. You can try to work around this by manually selecting your network. That's what I had to do. It's a temporary fix but again, another annoyance to an otherwise fairly good designed phone.

Others here might want to wait for the Motorola Q/Q9 but initial feedback didn't sound very good as well. We just can't win yet.

    If i were you I would not buy the P990i. I bought it three months ago and i totally regret it. it has a really bad qwerty keyboard and it the phone itself is very slow despite the three firmware updates SE has issued so far. It is very bulky and 50% heavier than the i600. I am not sure if the i600 has a touch screen or not though. good luck man...

      i don't really understand why some people hate this phone. Dammnn!! This phone is incredible, unbelievable and believe it or not, Its on Ripleys :) hehe..

      Currently using O2 mini and gonna trade it for this amazing gadget this weekends!

        Battery life is bad and the network reception is worse.It drops reception and it freezes sometime.P990 is better that I600 samsung

          I have bought this phone in Belgium. It worked fine. I travelled in Asia and it worked fine as well.

          Upon returning to my home country Jordan, the phone displays "No Service". It can receive calls/SMS but cannot place calls/SMS.

          I took the phone to the Samsung dealer and they said it has something to do with the Network. They tried the other provider's SIM and it worked OK. But it does not work on the my network (which supports GSM 900 and 1800). They tried their best to make it work - but could not :-(

          I'm going to have to ditch this phone if I don't get a solution.

          If anyone can help - that would be much appreciated.

            push email is when the email is sent to your phone as you receive it on your inbox, instead of having to select get and send on your phone, it is an additional service but worth geting if you are email dependant for work

              AAARRRGGGHHH!!!! I'm torn between the Samsung SGH-i600 and Sony Ericsson P990i. Please help me pick! Which one do you think I should get???

              Here are the pros of each (in my humble opinion):

              i600: design (thin/small; great surface texture), HSDPA, one-handed use, WM OS, "g" Wifi,

              P990i: excellent camera, large touch screen (although could be a con - see below), FM Radio, document editors (quite important for me)

              While the touch screen function is cool and may make web browsing and document editing easier (especially for spreadsheets), the single-hand usability of the i600 is also a big plus for me. I like the way the i600's keyboard is laid out though, and the placement of the scroll wheel is just right for single, right-handed use.

              As for price, I find them quite comparable where I'm from (the Philippines), with the P990i being very slightly cheaper (probably since the model is more than a year old). Although the slightly more expensive price of the i600 doesn't include a MicroSD card, while the P990i has a 64MB MS Duo in the package.

              I'm leaning towards the i600, but just wish it had WM6 so I could edit Office documents on it. Any chance it can be upgraded from the stock MW5 to MW6 in the near future?

                      I had the exact same issues with the samsung i600 and they are all sorted with the nokia e61i. i am not a nokia phone but have done an excellent job with this phone.

                        I've had the i600 for about a month now (note, it is a little different than the Blackjack which another friend has). I really feel very mixed about this phone. I'm coming from previously using the Nokia N73/N91/6288, Dopod 838 Pro, and the O2 XDA Atom. I wanted to stay with a QWERTY keyboard type phone so I chose this. The definite positives are that it's amazingly thin. Definitely something small and comfortable for something with a Qwerty. Given that I have to carry around a Blackberry too and considering the other Qwerty devices, this was well done.

                        The menus take a while to get used to and is a little different than other phones. Battery life for me was fairly decent. I charge daily anyway so not an issue and you are given two batteries. Data speed was good and a little faster even than the Dopod 838 Pro I was previously using. WiFi is fine though I had problems finding the MAC address as I MAC filter on my router. There are lots of features built-in which does make it quite good and things like HSDPA does make it technology-rich in such a small package.

                        Now the negatives, which is the one reason I'm going to get rid of it as soon as I can find something to switch too: My biggest gripe is the poor reception. I think I figured out what's going on as I'm a telco guy - the phone does a poor job of switching from 3G to 2G (they need a better algorithm). Instead it tries to hang onto the 3G signal. This means you get a lot of dropped calls when your 3G signal becomes weak (instead of switching over to a 2G signal for example). Having said that, I've even had dropped calls on a 2G network. This is really the first phone I've had in sometime that actually just "drops" the calls. Very annoying.

                        I didn't realise that the i600 was a Windows Mobile 5.0 SMARTPHONE rather than a full WM5 (probably too excited to get the phone than read the specs in detail) and hence a lot programs and things I had that worked on my previous WM5 device didn't work on this. Had I known, this would have been a very NEGATIVE selling point. Issues like what others bring up about editing Word files or past programs that I have for WM like WorldMate, Skype, IM, etc. don't work now. A good example of the shortcomings of this "lite" version of WM5 smartphone is that you CAN'T sync your Outlook Notes. Samsung figured this out late as they now have a download program you have to install to do this.

                        It does take some time to get used to the screen being more "horizontal". All things appear so small. Pictures, web pages, etc. I definitely prefer a bigger screen. A smaller, vertical screen would actually feel larger because images fit better - and we're more used to it.

                        The keys are also very small and too close together. I keep mistyping which is really annoying for a Qwerty device. It's also not very sensitive as I usually hold down the shift button, press a letter, only to have that letter be lower case. Then I have to re-type it.

                        I've managed to crash my i600 at least once every few days now. The thing goes a bit crazy and some of the buttons won't work. To solve this, you can turn it off or you can go to the Task Manager and try to 'Stop' all the programs. That usually works but is nevertheless annoying. Don't try to use too many programs at once without properly closing them first in the Task Manager.

                        Also the settings are a bit weird because when I took it with me on my travels, at first it wouldn't log onto a "roaming" network even when I selected Automatic. I had to manually search out the networks, select them individually, then switch back and "allow" them to be connected. May not be a Samsung i600 issue but a WM5 smartphone, but still irritating.

                        Other issues to gripe about include the previously mentioned "dust" under the screen, the flimsy rubber covers on the ports, the difficult to remove cover for the battery and the poor camera. While I realise no phone is perfect, this one just isn't right for me. Just my 2 cents worth.

                          Has anyone had a problem syncing their I600 with their computer?
                          After following the instructions and loading 4.0, then 4.5 of activesync it won't sync. Activesync is telling me it is trying to sync but there is no indiction of communcication with the phone.

                              Can you use mpe, aac or wav files to set as SMS or email message tone to the sgh-i600? Samsung phones I've had only has preset tones for messaging, but I'm just wondering if the i600 can now use mp3 tones to use in the message tones. Anyone please advise. Thank you!

                                I got this phone today...great phone!!
                                One bad point though...dust appear below the LCD screen. But it can be service by the Samsung customer care.

                                Does any one know where to get a nice holder for the phone. need to protect this great investment.

                                      Received my SGH-i600 last week, Great phones.
                                      I''ve been very very careful with it. Not been scratched, dropped, missused in any way.

                                      But there is dust already starting to appear under the screen. Heard it might be a common problem.
                                      Anyone else got a similar problem? Can it be fixed?
