It was an ok phone till about a month or 2 before my phone upgrade came up then it started shutting off by itself, stuff popped up on the screen randomly and it started running horribly slow. I'm thinking att and samsung have a deal that wrecks your phone around upgrade time so your forced to upgrade.

I love my Samsung i897 Captivate...I had it for about one year now and the only problem I had I fixed it online. By far its the best phone I ever owned. I recently upgraded and its blowing my mind on how fast it can process.

This is an awesome phone. I've used my friend's iPhone 4 for a few weeks before buying it and the Captivate beats it. I prefer the Captivate to the iPhone 4. For some reason the iPhone just feels like a normal communication device and I got bored with the phone very quickly. As for the Captivate, I'm really enjoying it, there's always something new to try or do.
It's pretty fast in all areas including the web and supports flash content. Some movies don't play but when using alternative players such as MoboPlayer then all movies play with great quality. Using the tons of 3rd party apps is where the Captivate really starts to shine in it's glory.
I'm running Android 4 OS ICS. It can be slow at times but this is usually if it is installing an app. The battery life is bad. It's power usage is probably due to the number of apps and screen size. There's also a slight problem with the speaker cause it tends die, this only happened once thus far. I simply press on the speaker and it's back again, this seems to be a design flaw (as noted on forums).
TIP FOR BATTERY LIFE:
I've dimmed the screen light and lost 1/4 battery life over night. Then tried a brighter screen light and lost half battery life over night. So try changing the screen brightness and see if it helps with your battery life.

Captivate is pretty good. ive had it for more than a year. the camera is amazing, so is the video. the screen and the speaker is really loud when playing mp3.the screen size is i think the perfect size for a smart phone. 4.5 inch for me is too big. less than 4 inch is kind of small.

I bought one when they were first released and loved it. The first ones as with anything new had various glitches that they have since fixed and the newest Captivates are amazing phones! I will never own anything other than a Samsung phone with the Android operating system!

Amazing phone, have had it for one year so far and no problems at all. Battery life is great if you install a task-killing app.

singh.., 28 Apr 2012i read it in the specification dat it doesn't have radio...... moreThe Galaxy S (GT-i9000) has a FM tuner chip in it that the U.S. Captivate (i897) does not.
There are rumors involving hacking the bcm4329 chip which the Captivate does have. Unfortunately, the FM tuner functionality of this chip can't be accessed or enabled for the i897.

Anonymous, 16 Apr 2012I would not suggest this phone to anyone. I have this phone... moreThe phone isn't actually shutting off but rather dimming to save power/energy. Other phone lines do this also such as Motorola to slow down the battery draining. It's a power saving mode built into a lot of smartphones and androids because of all the power they eat up. You can easily make an adjustment that will fix this. Just run the app called Captivate Keep Alive and the problem should disappear.
