We had quite aloud debate today at work about whether you should charge brand new Li-Ion batteries for 16 hours or not. I was sure it's not necessary but I had to prove my stance.

I did some googling and now I'm absolutely positively 100% sure you DON'T need to charge new Li-Ion batteries for 16 hours. This is one of the stories that tries to go deep on the subject and don't just say "do it just to be sure". Of course, there are people that say just that, but they all say it from the top of their head, no one has given any proof or link.

So, any warning that says you should overcharge must be general and it's not specific to Li-Ion batteries. It covers all kinds batteries.

The reason why overcharging is good is obviously this thing called "trickle charge" and it exists in Ni-Mh batteries. This is a charging phase that follows the "fast charge" phase (that's when the phone/camera/other device shows that the battery is full). Li-Ion batteries and charges do not have "trickle charge" and when your charger/gadget says battery is full, it's full.

Another thing is that Li-Ion batteries do not have the memory effect. So you don't need to fully discharge and then fully charge your batteries every time.

But yes, your battery will die on you. Soon or later.

Probably the most useful information I found is a table of do's and dont's for different kind of batteries. I think it tells more or less everything you should know about your batteries. Check it out!

total and utter upgrade from my Samsung Jet which incidentally changed the way I looked at Samsung phones. Just downloaded Jewels and Asphalt 5 for my Galaxy S and a few more movies and I am beyond impressed at how smooth everything is, how gorgeous the 4inch screen display truly even with it set to 25% brightness, and how quick this moderately sized and feather weight handset really is. I have absolutely no regrets dropping nearly 600 US on this baby and upgrading my plan to include data service... Positively the best buy ever. I feel sorry for those who are dissatisfied with this phone but to each his own.

had this phone and tried all ways advised to connect to pc, but no can do, lots of posts re this problem, simply put its up to samsung to correct these issues asap, not have customers jump thru hoops to get their phones working, also weak gps connection, even with good service, could be deeper, which would give room for better battery, and better strength, camera cover, and quality would be nice, good hd video, lots better than desire, would seem this has been rushed somewhat to rival iphone, sending it back, and will wait a couple of months for bugs to be fixed i think, better support would be nice from samsung

          battery is doing well today,
backlight 30 seconds and 25% brightness using only 3g when necessary

In settings under accounts and syc i turned off background data and its see to increase battery a lot,,however this setting is needed probably for some people..

Have downloaded an overclock widget which allows you to tweak frequencies only if you rooted fone..I want to say more but best not too and leave it to experts.I think froyo will give a big increase in everything and someone asked about its update and the galaxy can take froyo..I am learning like mad this past 48 hrs..

The spec i think is 1ghz cpu plus 512MB ram and something else so that rules out a lot of Android fones..I must admit that Android is allover the place with so many models and software types and manufacturers overlays it is a bit of a nightmare..

To me the galaxys battery is lasting twice as long as omnia hd and is much better to use and it feels lighter and smaller even tho its got bigger screen.

              I had a few more Q's

              1. Was reading in some other forums that there may be issues with the software upgrade to 2.2 froyo!

              2. I have over 1000 contacts in my omnia hd which ive synced with outlook. Does this one work with outlook too? Else its gonna be a pain doing this manually...

              3. What is samsung keis?

Kath, 10 Aug 2010Hi, I'm one of the early adopters from the Galaxy S, using... moreok thats on my list to try swype,,ive heard a lot of people using this and having better results than expected..

I am still setting it up to my liking,,i set up my most used app and then decide others are more necessary and put them nearer to first 2 screens,,then theirs the wallpapers and whether to leave animation on and then something ive been wanting to do fo ages and get all contacts updated and extra email addresses put in and getting rid of double entries..

My 32GB card is 24GB full but need to cherry pick some songs and videos to leave more space since video recording is taking about 160-200MB per 3 minute video..My smartfones i buy are everything from cam/vid/mp3 players plus time and alarm clocks and mini games machine the lot..I have an addiction to these little electronic wonders..I reckon in another week i will be more up to confidence in just picking up galaxy and walking out the door and using it as my everyday smartfone..I do trust the battery to last a thru a 14 hr day with it back on charge at night....

Prolong the Life of Your Battery
                                        ==================================
Initialize a new battery. New batteries should be fully charged before their first use to obtain maximum capacity. Nickel-based batteries should be charged for 16 hours initially and run through 2-4 full charge/full discharge cycles, while lithium ion batteries should be charged for about 5-6 hours. Ignore the phone telling you that the battery is full--this is normal but is not accurate if the battery is not initialized. #DO NOT fully discharge a lithium-ion battery! Unlike Ni-Cd batteries, lithium-ion batteries' life is shortened every time you fully discharge them. Instead, charge them when the battery meter shows one bar left. Lithium-ion batteries, like most rechargeable batteries have a set amount of chargers in them.[1]

Charge your battery correctly, in accordance with its type. Most newer cell phones have lithium-ion batteries, while older ones generally have nickel-based batteries. Read the label on the back of the battery or in the technical specifications in the manual to determine which yours is.

Nickel-based batteries (either NiCd or NiMH) DO NOT generally suffer from a misunderstood phenomenon known as the "memory effect." As described in Wikipedia and many expert sources,[2] the term "memory effect" has been widely mythologized to describe any and all deterioration of NiCd (and other battery chemistries), in many cases misleading consumers into further shortening the lives of the batteries through over-discharging to "recondition" them.[3]
[This section formerly read: If you charge the battery partially enough times, eventually the battery "forgets" that it can charge fully. A nickel-based battery suffering from memory effect can be reconditioned, which requires the battery to be completely discharged, then completely recharged (sometimes several times). The appropriate length of time between reconditionings varies. A good rule to follow for nickel-battery cell-phones is to discharge them completely once every two to three weeks, and only when you have a charger available. [4] ]
Lithium ion batteries can be preserved by careful charging and avoiding storing them at full charge.[5] They do not require "reconditioning."
Regardless of the battery type, use only a charger rated for your battery, and discontinue use of a charger that causes the battery to heat up excessively.
