jankesdh, 20 Jun 2010also there is a section of "inactive" 132592kB an... morejudging from what you posted.. ~130 + 50, and ~330 avail memory.. that totals to around ~512mb of ram. I strongly believe that the galaxy S has a total of 512mb ram, but due to android 2.1, it can only access around ~230mb of ram. This probably explains how froyo gave nexus one a big boost in speed because it could access double amount of ram.
A good way to clear this up is to check out Desire users, and N1 users that still have 2.1, and see if they only have 256mb of ram. (run the same resource monitor app on all phones: Desire, N1, Galaxy S)

Fongy, 20 Jun 2010Hi Guys,
Just received my new Galaxy S and thought I'd g... moreWell, I wouldn't be so sure about amount of RAM because Android 2.1 recognize about 230 RAM.
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=6b2d8f0fdbcc7e54&hl=en
DroidInfo shows me 333416 kB in MemTotal section - I don't know if this is a max mem available for OS or if it's all hardware mem installed in phone.
Max of free mem I had was about 160MB (fresh start) without touching task killer.
So I guess that this phone got at least this ~333MB of RAM or 512MB.

Hi Guys,
Just received my new Galaxy S and thought I'd give you my impressions...
If you're read my previous posts you'll know I'm not a fanboy of any model / company (my previous phone was HTC Hero, I've had SonyE phones, Nokias and Samsungs before!)
The first thing you notice is how slim and light it is... not in a negative way, because it does feel sturdy in your hand... So don't worry about it snapping / breaking, it has a nice curve at the bottom to assist holding, and I think the construction is just fine (and as I've said it looks FAR better than pictures - but very similar to iphone - no bad thing...)
Secondly - RAM - it's definitely 256MB RAM - not 512 as previous articles... - I've checked my apps and have taskmanager running and they both confirm this - naughty Samsung for saying otherwise...
HOWEVER - the phone runs SOOOOOOOOO smooth - probably about 2 x or more faster than the HTC Hero - just opening basic apps like audiomanager, etc. you really notice the difference...
The main attraction is the screen, and until you see it yourself, it's just unbelievable - and if you think, that this is what you're going to be looking at for 95% of the time... it really is a showcase... Just watching UP or Avatar or Alice in Wonderland (even TV series) just looks amazing - it's made everyone go "WOW - That's better than my TV!!!" - and there's no lag when jumping through a video (you know, that stutter you get and pixelation - nothing like that at all!)
The music player deserves a mention - it really looks the part and is (dare I say it) better than the iphone coverflow system - the Galaxy's looks modern, sleek and sexy!!
Finally - I have noticed the phone has "frozen" a few times in the 3 days I've had it - no more or less than the HTC - and that is because I'm really putting it through its paces... but it's nothing you should be worrying about...
If you want to know anything else - just ask! It's well worth the upgrade, there are some great contracts available for it - and I upgraded early!!!
I don't know how phones can get better than this - it has a screen to die for, it's certainly got the speed (despite 256 RAM) and more than enough storage for all users...
VERY HAPPY!!!

Hi, I got this phone and if anyone would ask some question just let me know :) For my is great, very fast and smooth UI, lags sometimes. With Android 2.1 I got form 80MB to 150MB free RAM, (gained with some sort of task killer) so it's not bad, but I hope it's got 512MB on board. It would be ridiculous if it got less than that...
There is only one annoyance - in free apps you get adverts and to get them phone connects internet anytime you use them so best option is to get "pro" versions of each app.
Movies are surprising good for phone but photos could be better but I don't thing that anyone is biung it for replace pocket camera ;)
I had one problem with phone book - I could not delete some of contacts but I sorted it out.
No problems with screen in a sunny day. You don't have to struggle to see something - you just see averything without a problem (at least me) and that's great!
Anyway great phone :) Recommended

I just turned the flash off. The web browsing is snappy and no lags. Flash support is good but absolutely need a faster OS like froyo. I want to try the speed of froyo with full flash when it's available.

I got a Galexy S 3 days ago from Singapore. So far, it's a good phone - the best screen, good multi touch (as good as iphone), good call quality. For web browsing, very very slow (supporting lite flash with Dolphin HD). The lagging is very annoying and I can't make the lite flash off.
