I upgraded my Firmware to Gingerbread v2.3.6 VAP mainly for the built in photo editor.
The bonus was that I also got the new lockscreen (nice), and Face Unlock which I'm not all that sure about because I have read elsewhere that you can hold a photo of the owner in front of the camera and it unlocks it. (Don't know if that is true, I haven't used Face Unlock, it seems silly).

          @ venomous

The upgrade from Froyo to Gingerbread was necessary to address bugs and performance issues. ICS isn't a necessary update for the SGS as the phone is working perfectly on the latest Gingerbread build.

If all you want is the Face unlock then you can download a Face unlock app from Play Shop or wait for the Value pack to be released.

          All the best.

          Ray.

You're getting confused with memory vs processing power.
The Galaxy S has a single core processor and ICS reqires a minimum of a dual core processor to run efficiently. That is the main reason why Samsung decided that it couldn't be done. I've tried ICS on my SGS and it was struggling!
I've been using XXJVU (Gingerbread v2.3.6 Value Added Pack) for some time now and it is as far as you can go with what is now sadly an outdated phone.
If you can't wait for v2.3.6 then you can go here and find what you need to flash the phone yourself.

                            @ venomous

Freefaller has answered the question perfectly and Samsung have made their decision. There's nothing that can be done about that now.

The HTC features the Sense UI which is completely different to Samsungs TouchWiz UI.

                            All the best.

like cmon man thousands no thousands but millions i guess of people are still having and using this mobile and samsung just cant ignore or dissapoint its sgs users for not giving us ics .

I have posted the answer to this before...... but here it is again.....

The limitation of all single core Samsung devices is that the system partition is too small, which makes it difficult to put ICS along with Samsung's TouchWiz UI, so they decided not to upgrade them to ICS. Samsung never neglected SGS, it's one of few phones that had the chance to see two major Android upgrades (Froyo and Gingerbread). The main problem was that Samsung said they would think about it, instead of simply saying 'NO' and giving hope to people like that. Samsung could put stock ICS on SGS without Touchwiz, but that would mean a whole new learning experience, which the majority of users would be uncomfortable with. SGS is also too old a device to keep upgrading, Samsung has done enough for it.

Your phone is locked to a different network than the one you are trying to use.
Go onto the Android Market and search 'unlock Galaxy S'. There are a couple of apps that might work.

I really wouldn't bother with the custom version of ICS for the SGS. I've tried it and believe me it's not good enough. If the information that Androphile linked to is correct then you're better off waiting for the value pack. You're phone will thank you for it in the long run.

If you're still hellbent on getting ICS then go along to XDA developers for a proper how-to guide.
