Are you sure on that Ray, because if you go to Settings/Locale and text/Select locale/ it lists English (South Africa) in the options, so I assume SA is supported.

Ok Gas, good to know. You should be fine updating then. However, you'll most likely have to use the correct CSC and Modem for your region rather than the ones in the download as they're for the European region.

          Ray.

              @ Freefaller

The reason I ask is that there are still some people in the states who are still running Eclair because the networks are useless at releasing updates. I just think it's odd that someone is still on Eclair when they should be on Froyo or Gingerbread by now.

              All the best.

              Ray.

Why does he have to be from over the pond?

I had Eclair on my Galaxy when I purchased it nearly two years ago. In fact, if you look at GSMArena's review of the phone on the 13th April 2010 it clearly mentions 'the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S packs all the updates brought by Android 2.1, like several new widgets and Live wallpapers as seen on the Nexus One'.

                  http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9000_galaxy_s-review-467p3.php

We've flashed our Galaxy's so many times we are forgetting what it was like back then.

                    @ Gas.

Sorry mate, I was only messing with you. It's just that I can't stand the sight of the Wildfire. Two friends of mine have the Wildfire and I think it's a horrible little phone.

                    Anyway, you mention you will be updating from Eclair. Does that mean you are in the USA? If so you may not be able to upgrade to 2.3.6 using the method linked to. The following quote is taken from the tutorial for flashing JVU;

"This guide is applicable only for Samsung’s Galaxy S international version (GT-i9000). Check your phone’s version in Settings – About Phone. It has to be “GT-i9000” for this firmware to be compatible with your phone. If it’s not GT-i9000, simply don’t try this ROM on your android handset — don’t even think about it if you care about your android device."

                    Ray.

There is no problem upgrading from Eclair or any other Firmware to v2.3.6 VP.
I just looked at the link again and noticed something that is missing.
After you have flashed your phone and it is running, turn it off again and restart it holding down Vol Up + Home + Power buttons at the same time. Your phone will now go into Recovery mode. Use the volume keys to select 'wipe cache partition' and press the home button. Then do the same with 'wipe data/factory reset', and finally select 'reboot system now'.
Doing that will optimize your battery and remove data flux from your phone.
Remember though that you will have a clean phone, all your contacts, apps etc will be gone. It is like a new phone, but you will be amazed at the speed it runs at (especially coming from Elair).
                      Good Luck.

This is the Rom I used; as far as I can tell it is the official one. I have been using it for about two months now without any problems at all. No lag, no Force Closes, and the battery life now is superb; I manage to get 5 days from one charge regularly.
I gave up on Kies a long time ago, in my opinion it is a bug ridden piece of bloatware; so I use Odin for flashing my phone. I've upgraded four Galaxy S phones now without any trouble; but as a disclaimer I would point out that you flash your phone at your own risk.
On the link page you will see that you get a new lock screen, a photo editor, and Face Unlock, along with several bug fixes.
                              Good Luck.
