For the secret code, you must press the BACK button to get to the full menu of options! Read the instructions carefully :-)

The steps are for a U700, but it worked on my U900. The firmware must be pretty standard across phones in certain areas.

Re. volume settings - well, it worked for me. I'm no expert, so I have no idea why it might not have worked for you. Are you doing it correctly? And yes, it does seem dumb to release a phone with obvious low volume issues, even if it can be fixed using a secret code. The buyer shouldn't have to fiddle around with secret service codes to configure the phone the way they want it. But what to do?

To barbie
You have to change the phone's theme. Settings-3-1-1

Hi!
As I said all standard settings have been adjusted to maximum to increase the ear piece volume. I personally don't see why we should have to mess with the service menu setiings. If we screw up we invalidate warranty. Its just not worth it. Samsung should get the settings right in the first place!

You can change the volume settings - see below! It really is very easy, and not a big reason to ditch such a nice phone.

Hi!
My wife likes Samsung phones especially the slide ones. As it was upgrade time we decided to go for the U900. It has a lovely design with that cool touch pad. We played around with it and found the menu system the same as other Samsung phones . . . not brilliant.
The major flaw is the earpiece volume during calls. She works in London and always calls once she has left work. On the busy streets it was just impossible to turn the earpiece volume to anything close to audible.
We took the phone back on this problem and asked to exchange it for another one hoping it was the phone. It seems the volume is definitely low on these handsets. In the end she chose the Nokia Slide. The earpiece volume is so much better and it is not even on full volume. Granted the phone is not as cool or new, but she really only uses it for calls and not features.
I am not a Nokia fan by the way, but I would say the Samsung seems to have a big flaw. Maybe there is a way of altering this, but the standard default settings really are a disappointment. It is a shame as she really liked the U900.
However, in the end if you can't hear the person on the other end of the line in different conditions then the phone is a let down. I rate the phone 4/10. If the phone does not do its basic functions correctly without having to go into the service menu and possible software updates then it has failed in its classification as a phone!
No doubt there will be a huge mob willing to defend the phone, but maybe others might share the same view as my wife and me.
