- can't use GPRS/3G
- can't send MMS/e-mail
- can't use GPS
- can't use FeliCA
- can't use NAVI
- can't use Firmware Upgrade
- can't use T9/predictive text
GRRRR! pepapipz hu has been mean to this phone shut up! The usabilty of this depends on your network! like here in the phils. the 903 was very usable since customers can ask for gprs/3g settings and mms.... video calling is superb as long as u have 3g signal since video calling doesn't need any settings! as for this phone i'm sure slight changes would occur! and about the predictive input! Of course if u don't know how to speak/write nippongo its really useless but for us who can its great help!
GPS, Felica and Firmware upgrade would really be of no use since no country can match the adancement of technology of japan and no country would be able to afford to use it or even think about it only japan!
This is J-Wave! and by the way cellphones came originally from the philippines just like the flourescent and others that western countries had taken! ja ne!

Ok Timmy, you do that.
At the end of the day it's not that important anyway, but this has nothing to do with risks, it's a simple matter of common sense.
With car payments, rent and other expenses most people can't simply throw out US$400. But it's only a phone, no matter how awesome it may be.
You enjoy your 904SH.

Don't misunderstand my point. I love SHARP and I have a loyalty to it because of the great QUALITY. But this is us... the other 95% of mobile users simply want a phone that WORKS and is functional, functional with the latest that our modern networks can offer.
Most people won't care how advanced the phone is when it is not available here, and you will find similar great firmware features in the latest NOKIA and SE models ( I believe).
It is kind of silly to put faith into SHARP or "unlockers". I don't want to hack my way through to using a mobile phone. In reality we should be able to use a phone without having to do that.
Obviously no one can test the 904SH because there are no shops outside of Japan to offer this model. No one will buy a US $400 "phone " just to play with it's functions when you can't use it as a phone.
Putting aside the fact that it may eventually be unlocked. I know you know that it will, but how good this unlock will be is still in question.
I am asking on behalf of others that may want to know those special things about this phone, not because I have "no faith" in unlockers.
So do us the favor and take 5 minutes to summarize briefly of what you can see in this phone aside from the non-usable features (Felica, NAVI etc). Again, this is not to put down the 904SH or in any way discourage people from buying it. But customers should get a sense of "value" for this model, especially when so many features will not be available outside of Japan.
Or what other point should there be to buy this phone? Think of others, not yourself in particular... SHARP fanatics don't count ;)

Hi Harlekkin
I am not going to list all the better things over the 903 as it seems that people dont listen, If people want to know then please buy one.
I noticed that you said earlier on that SMS is a "maby" on the unlocked 904.. where did u read that? That isnt true at all. some guy once said on a forum that 904 didnt have an option to change MSG number.. well it does so that blows that theory.
904SH is WAY WAY better then the 903SH, 903SH is dog meat over the 904SH, I am glad that not many people have brought one, just goes to show the people that have faith in Sharp and unlockers. They WILL come up with an unlock but i am more then happy to wait. Good things are going to happen.
If people are wanting to know about the 904 over the 903.. please buy one or go into a shop to see.. seing is believing!
Regards Tim a VERY happy 904SH owner

SHARP 905SH
=============
905SH is WCDMA ONLY and hence not really GSM. It doesn't support GSM frequencies and cannot be used outside of Japan.
It cannot be unlocked as it was never designed to work or ROAM on any other WCDMA network outside Japan. This is to safeguard the phone from foreign DMB signals that may overheat or damage the phone.
This information was obtained from the 905SH Vodafone Manual.

I have the 904sh and love it. I saw in China the other day a guy taking a picture with his 904sh and the camera made an awesome customized camera noise when it took a shot. Is there any way a 904sh owner can go in and customize the picture taking sounds? His 904sh featured something that was like the "energize" sound from Star Trek. Very cool. My 904sh doesn't have that sound as an option. (Are China versions made with different sound options?) If anyone knows how to customize 904sh camera sounds and what file or files need(s) to be added/replaced, could you please let me know? Thanks! 904sh Daisuki !

Yes, even when the phone can be unlocked you will not be able to use network features other than voice call and maybe SMS.
This phone is not meant to operate on foreign networks, so don't be surprised about this.
It has been exclusively designed for the Japanese Vodafone Network and most functions can only be used there.

Hey Duke,
sorry, haven't been "over there" a lot lately.
For the best pics:
1. Make sure the lense is clean!!! Buy a special tissue/cloth to clean the lense regularly.
2. Set the setting to fine or super fine.
3. Use the full 3.2MPx only during good lighting. I recommend 1.3-2 Mpx for darker environments as the "shutter speed" will be much quicker. You'll notice the difference in bluriness.
4. Use manual focus on close-up objects and auto-focus on objects further away. Auto-focus isn't good in judging objects close by.
5. Make sure you hold still!!!
Have a look at these shots I took:

SOFTBANK
=========
I'm quite excited to see the new SHARP models, as they are supposed to catch up with FOMA standards. And since Vodafone isn't completely out of the picture we might even see one or two models in Europe!!!
So I hope...

So are you guys ready for the new 904sh lineup set for october?
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y123/sketch143/l_os_904shnew.jpg
the older colors will probably be phased out and will be replaced by White, Pink and Navy Blue.
They say the replacement will take place the same time Softbank takes over Vodafone JP, which is on October 1st.

Hi Timmy,
don't get me wrong, you know I LOVE my SHARP. But what advantages will this phone offer anyone even when unlocked? A pretty firmware and nice display - what features will definatelly be usable that will make this phone truly outstanding?
- can't use GPRS/3G
- can't send MMS/e-mail
- can't use GPS
- can't use FeliCA
- can't use NAVI
- can't use Firmware Upgrade
- can't use T9/predictive text
What can you use other than the MP3 Player and camera? What features would be attractive for someone not living in Japan?
I've wasted enough money on the latest "Technologies" and have learnt from my beta 903SH that I just don't want a pretty phone only. I want one that works.
I'm in NO WAY insulting this SHARP masterpiece. It IS ADVANCED, if the features weren't locked or so damn network dependant.
But shed some light on any features I may not be aware of, PLEASE ;)

Hi Tim.G
The Japanese firmware will use AAC Media Files. On my 904SH and my 903SH I have converted all the files in i-tunes to AAC for them to work on the japanese firmware phones.
As for the unlocking of the DB2020, Most of the K800i's are unlocked as they havnt been brought on a network or have been unlocked via an IMEI Calculation. The reason that Japanese phones cannot be unlocked by IMEI is cos the lock is usually in the firmware and is a Full 4 lock, on the IMEI unlocked ones they dont have all 4 locks.
There is news on the cracking of the K800i and the firmware can be flashed and unlocking can occur on a tool but connects to a server and they charge for the firmware.
The 904SH unlock is very soon.. i can almost smell it :)
To everyone saying that this phone is nothing more then a nicer display over the 903SH, please be aware that this comment is 100% wrong. This phone's firmware is NOTHING like Sharp firmware that has evern been seen in their vodafone phones ever. This firmware is totally unbranded only says vodafone when you turn it on, there is no vodafone red themes like on 902 and 902 what so ever. So many features have been added that make the 903's firmware seem as thick as Nokia 1100. 904SH is a huga advance in technology that people cant understand until they buy one.

======
Hey buddy, ok:
- max. size is 300kb (length depending on quality)
- there is no English Dictionary available
You're better off using MP4/M4A ringtones. If you have SD-Jukebox you can DRM them with that or you can use the IMA trick to use any AAC+ ringtone up to 2.5 MB.
cheers,
Harlekkin
