Hi Harlekkin
Yea ill be your 904SH lab rat hahaha
the 904SH will be hardly usuable on the NZ network also.. There is many features that are network dependant
- Comic Browsing
- NAVI GPS System
- FeliCa
- MMS (Cannot edit the settings)
- WAP (Also cannot edit the settings)
- Vodafone CAST!
- Update and Data Re-Prov
The Customo Themes are downloadable from the internet and then you put them on your phone from the memory card, The MP3's require them to be AAC's and all those Stupid things about the Japanese firmware. Also on this new firmware you cannot Edit the wap and MMS settings in the phone, under Internet settings you have options for Get WAP and MMS data and Clear Data and White List.
Also another fault that i have noticed with this 904 firmware is that the Clock will not adjust unless you have the time on 24hr time. If its on 12hr it just stays at 00:00 and even if I change it it says Accepted but when you go back to standby its just 00:00 still... I cant work it out!
I have heard rumours about 904SH unlocking..
- The unlocks there, its just a $$$ problem
- Zeula Dosn't know how much to charge
- Unlock is done.. just SMS problems
- Never unlockable
- Not unlockable in the near Future
- Unlocks out in Philipeans
- Unlocks out in Veitnam
All sorts of rumours but.... its deff not out yet.. its comming tho.. im sure
The 904SH isnt more expancive then the 903SH.. 904SH is locked so the price should be about $100 less then the 903 until unlocking is out and then I think that it will be about another $250 more then the 903SH.
We will just have to sit back and wait
Also Harlekkin you know that power 8 trick on the 903SH.. what is the number for the HK firmware?
Thanks Tim

Hey, absolutely no doubts that the 904SH is the best thing ever! I'm a 903SH user and my last 4 models were all SHARP. I know what I'm in for!
If the full unlock will be available it will be great. But here are my concerns:
Because there is no European Version available I am afraid that the 904SH will only be compatible with my Network to a certain extend. It is nice to make calls and SMS, but I want ALL features to be available.
I used the 903SH Beta Unlock for 3 Months and was unhappy about it's incompatibility with my network. MMS didn't work, and GPRS/WCDMA browsing was buggy.
I used the 802SH with European Firmware, yet I could hardly get anything to work on it.
The 904SH is miles better, but from what I have read on Vodafone KK, there are too many Network dependant features that just simply cannot work outside Japan.
Custom screens are nice, but if you can't download them via the phone it's useless. Can you get them via the internet?
So once the full unlock is available I shall consider it, but maybe I'll let you just trial the 904SH for me ;)
cheers,
Harlekkin

The Gap: Europe - Japan
=========================
Today I realised again how far we, and Vodafone Group, are behind the Japanese.
The new SHARP models firmware can be updated and upgraded via the NETWORK - no cables. This is possible with few Siemens phones, but I beg to differ these models from the SHARP models.
That's pretty thoughtful! Another reason why the 904SH and 905SH would in NO way be compatible with our networks - even if we do unlock the 904SH.
For proof:
www.vodafone.jp/english/important/060619.html
Also, the rumoured unlocks all seem to have HUGE problems. Not being able to send SMS is one of them.
I have gotten used to my FULLY working 903SH, and I can't go back to using some half-finished product. It either works or it doesn't, but I can't put up with some incompatible device where I can "only" make calls and maybe not even send SMS.
With these devices being so advanced, I want to utilize everything. I won't buy it for the screen alone - that is ridiculous!

On eBay Australia there is a 12-in-1 SIM MAX card with reader.
Now it does say that it cannot decode Generation 5 SIM's, I don't know if that would be the kind of USIM Vodafone KK & DoCoMo are using?

Would it be a possibility?

to skater 42 ,,,i"ll be patient then!! Lets hope hspda gives a good result everywhere & does what 3g should have done.I wonder down the line if wi-max will end up being the winner as it also has potential to really lower browsing costs.I love the whole mobile /gadget devices"as you"ve guessed"& 3yrs ago or thereabouts they said it would be impossible to get video working on small devices & now were streaming tele.Who knows where we will be at in another 3 years,,,I KNOW...i will be going to the shops to buy a 904, ha! ha! only joking "but" they may have blood pressure & diabetes monitors built in & the much needed methanol power supplies.:)

The UK is better than Australia, stop being a girl about it LOL :P:P:P (joking)
Germany has just released its HSDPA network in all major cities, which is a real advancement.
Europe is slowly starting to implement these "Asian" things, but its a cultural barrier to a certain extent. You ask the majority of people on the street whether they would have their Oyster Card, Credit Card and Social Security Card on a phone and most will be skeptical about it. Especially Germans... I think that on our Continent people are programmed to stick to what they've got, a miracle that we're already using cars.
But we will see these things at some stage I believe, generally everything takes about 3 years longer :P
I'm hearing ya...

@ Kenny : It's not SHARP, it's us
===================================
I think most of us hear your cry, but unfortunatelly SHARP is doing very well with their mobile sales...even without the European market :(
They've got a high market share in Japan with DOCOMO/FOMA and Willcom etc.
You have to blame the Europeans. Sharp sales in Europe are disasterous. Nobody wants these "chunky" and heavy phones. Most people want a pink, fluffy and super-sexy anorexic mobile that beeps "New message for you...master." And the slimmer the sexier, sounds familiar (damn you Hollywood...).
Vodafone stores don't even stock the 903 anymore, it can be ordered on request but it's not there to make money. Nokia & SE can sell their toys because thats what people want.
SHARP knows where to make money, and its not in Europe. If only half of the mobile population would want these awesome Multimedia devices SHARP would be in!
I mean, my whole holiday in Germany was captured on my mobile...IN SUPERB QUALITY.

hi i am still mad at sharp for remaining with vodafone...companys exist to supply a product to make a profit so the rest of the world suffers because these fones are not available to us (im in uk).I had trouble way back wen the gx30 launched & voda locked most things & could we buy it sim free NO,,can i go & buy this sim free NO..I am sure sharp would be up there with the top place near enough it it went on its own & supplied the whole world with its handsets..This continual hacking and unlocking is solved overnite..SO in conclusion let the whole world enjoy your phones sharp your sales will rocket,,no more trying to obliterate your handsets in attempt to get them to work elsewhere & its fair policy as we in uk & the rest of the world have a right to own a phone we desire..CAN YOU HERE OUR CRYS SHARP..p.s. hello timmy ,,you used to gee me up & call me kenneth

===============
My Question:
What is the actual lock on the phone? Why does the phone reject a non-japanese USIM?
Is it possible to modify a foreign USIM so the phone allows access to the card? Or does the phone lock when no valid operator (Softbank) can be found?
Can anyone explain how the locking process actually works?
cheers,

Without a doubt the best sharp phone ever. Best LCD and really nice sounds even tho u have to buy the earphones seperatly. Very nice to hold overall a slightly better design then 903SH. I have to continue with my Nokia N91 until unlocking for this beast comes out. I have $700 NZ sitting in a little red box in the corner of my room inside that box is a little black block with a huge padlock through it hahaha... SAD!!!!
