The video recorder function is useful! 11 minutes of recording time with the 16MB SD card that came with the kit. Also, the kit came with a application CD-ROM, I haven't had the time to load it into my PC. Does anyone know how it works? I guess I still have to purchase the interface cable from Vodafone in order to load pictures and data from the phone to PC?

I have 1 week left in Japan, and I want to buy the V801SH to use in Canada. Does anyone know if that's possible? Can my service provider unlock the phone for me if that simlock that does exist?

there are 2 methods to unlo0ck v801sh.
one is confirmed to unlock which is using test mode of the handset.
but to enter the test mode, you will need special sd card which is provided from sharp and you may not be able to get it.
the other method which is not confirmed is to use the tool for gx30.
i just check the i/o port of my v801sh and it seems lil different from gx30.
hmm,,,hard way isnt it?
by the way, in japan, to sell the "locked" mobi phone is illegal. so if you sue vodafone jp or sharp, you will find the third way...

the phones are completely vodafone simlocked, so even though japanese users can take the phone overseas and use them, they must be used on the vodafone network, ie, you can't just pop in a new sim card and have it work on say, att's network. as of now there is still no known way to unlock the phones.
the lack of bluetooth is a drawback, but it hasn't quite caught on as much in japan yet, even though toshiba came out with a bluetooth equipped washing machine (wtf?).
another thing, this phone is pretty big compared to other phones in japan. same goes for the v801sa

I'm getting the phone activated in Japan and having it sent to Hawaii. I'll find out if the US SIM card will work in the unit.

To V701N User,
Thanks for the feedback and info on the NEC phone. I just bought the V801SH for my wife the other day and I've played around with the many features on it, including trying to play around with the USIM. I still have yet to try it on the U.S. networks. (I'm still hunting around to see if anyone has gotten that thing successfully unlocked...) Who knows? It might just work with 3 or KPN as they are USIM and not just SIM??
Some things I was dissapointed to see were that the Java capabilities were reduced to 128k from the SH53's 256k (so none of my cool 3D games I d/l'd onto my 53 will ever work on hers).
Also, the music player is a little trickier to navigate than with my 53. Now folders have been implemented, which makes it a pain to control what file I want it to play using the LCD remote.
(In other words, you have to set the folder you want to play first before you can start to use the remote.)
I'll let you know more once we get the phone over here for testing. Right now it's with her in China, and as far as I know, she can use that Japanese USIM in her Chinese NOKIA phone... Just can't do the opposite...

To Ric: No it was a Vodafone Global Standard Phone. NTT's Fomas only work on 3G so they would be useless outside 3G areas (so almost everywhere!) Yes i can use a 3 USIM with my phone. But only a 3 (UK) or KPN (Netherlands) USIM. It won't work with any SIM carriers like Orange, T-Mobile etc... You can roam in the whole of Europe on GSM900/1800 networks as well, but only if you use 3 as your provider. You will need a Dual-Mode (NEC V701N,Sanyo V701SA)handset to do so, as normal Japanese 3G phones only work on WCDMA/3G and will not work in areas where only GSM roaming is aivailable. I don't know about the V801SH though, as the V701N came out in Japan before 3G existed outside Japan and there was no reason to lock it...

to V701N User: so you are saying that you bought a NTT FOMA phone and without doing anything to it, just can swap SIMS with the UK carriers and your V701 works?

To the J-SH53 user,
I spend much time in Japan for work and i use a NEC V701N. When in the UK i just use a 3 USIM. Vodafone and NTT DoCoMo's FOMA service aren't the only ones that use USIM's. KPN Mobile (Netherlands) and 3 (UK) use them as well. Like Sharp NEC also claimed that it was locked to a Japanese USIM but mine works great with 3's and KPN's USIM. i don't know if the V801SH can be unlocked though, because it's impossible to unlock mine...

2000 message Inbox, 600 message Sent mail storage. Nice. It's pretty new right now. Maybe it will get unlocked in the future. Basically, yeah, it just gives a phone user from Japan the chance to use roaming outside Japan.

is the v801sh available?

I hope this phone has been fitted with a re-format capability. As current models have the "Restore Factory Settings" function, I think it is time they have a "Format Memory" function because these things are becoming more like computers: they can be modified, get viruses, have software added/deleted, etc. When the "Format Memory" function has been activated, everything should go back to the way it was when it left the production line, from Internal software to Ringtones.
Who agrees that this would be a good idea?
