In "t3" magazine, it says that sonyericsson k800i takes much better pictures than nokia n95, and overall better phone. compare n95 with k800i not k850i.

Magnificent phone! Recently i switch my aging Samsung D900 with this fone. Really impressed! Hope Sony Ericsson will release sliding-quadband (not HSDPA triband or quadband only for china market) version (the form like w910i) but with all the features of this fone! Great job SE!

          @TIE7
1)For every SE fanboy that automatically rates it highest possible, there's just as many nokia fanboys that rate it lowest possible. Both w/o ever handling the phone.
          2) I have said that the imaging is dissapointing as of now. Doesn't mean its not the best option for camera phone. Wait and see what the k850's camera will be capable of with proper firmware. Its optics are the best of the 5mp cameraphones as well as xenon flash as well as the most capable image taking/editing.

            Ed,

Cheers for the info on the keypad, it doesn't dissuade me from getting the phone! My upgrades in December anyhow so hopefully most of the firmware bugs would have been ironed out by then!

            Cheers :)

            Luke,

Have you looked on the SE website support page? You maybe able to update the firmware there instead of sending it away!
            Just a thought... :)

              Hey Jesse...thanks for you comments.
My phone arrived via a DHL delivery last night and was charging when you posted.

Now, call me as CRAZY as Jesse, but I'm also going to give you my opinion of this phone on a site created to enable users to post their opinions....a bizarre and somewhat alien concept I know, but there you have it!
I will also refrain from bitching about Nokia. I have never owned one and will not pretend otherwise.

I owned the W800 and W810 prior to getting the K850 - all on contract - from O2.
I'd always gone for SE Walkman mobiles thinking that the K range wouldn't have the same quality MP3 player.
I wasn't impressed with the W880 however (no radio or camera flash - what use is a super-slim mobile without the features???) and the W910 is no better (again, no flash and only a 2MP camera).

I had mixed first impressions of the K850, I have to say. The phone is smart although not as flash as the adverts (when are they ever???) and glossy, although this means that it does pick up fingerprints like you wouldn't believe. This said, these are, of course, easily removed with a quick "huff" and a swift Vic Reeves style rub on your trousers.

The button layout is markedly different to that of the phones that I have had previously and this takes some getting used to. This said, to an extent any new phone does, unless they are virtually identical like the W800 and W810.
Incidentally, when I got my W810, I felt a bit cheated as, although it was a fantastic mobile, it was so similar to the W800 that it almost didn't feel new and was simply plain boring - a bit like going back to the same place on holiday - no matter how much you liked it, you loose the excitment/anticipation of something new the second time round. Have a sense of adventure people!

The buttons are a little fiddly at first, truth be told, but I am sure that this is mainly due to my inexperience with it and I have improved already within 24 hours. I would add that I have had no issue with the touch sensitive buttons and really like them.

As for functions...where do I start?
I really like the camera. So many people are knocking it on here, but they seem to forget that no combi appliance (phone or otherwise) is as good as a dedicated appliance.
With some realistic expectations(!) I have found the camera a massive improvement to that on my W810 and deem this phone worth keeping on this one point alone. But there is so much more...!

Not only are the camera results better, there is a screen dedicated to improving your photography. With a few seconds spent reading these hints, you can improve the quality of the pictures that you take considerably. Perhaps some of those people knocking the camera have not discovered this?

The video, again, is not a patch on a dedicated camcorder, but it is as good as I have seen on a mobile phone.

The media player is fanstastic and far nicer to use and visually far more pleasing than that on the W810. There is also a dedicted touch sensitive button for your media files on the screen when you are in the "front page" screen (i.e. when you are not in a menu). This makes access to your photos, video and music dead easy and super-quick to boot.

I listen to a lot of music and will be getting the maximum microSD that this phone can handle without compromising the speed on start up etc. I believe that this is 4GB, but I have written to SE to see if I can go up to 8GB (will keep you posted).

In summary, if you don't set yourself up for a fall by assuming that the camera will be "out of this world" and you like listening to music, this phone is well worthwhile.
It maybe that navigation on this phone is never quite as user-friendly as on the W800/W810, but the sheer number and quality of its functions is pretty mind-blowing and easily overides this in my opinion. Furthermore, all who have seen and tried my K850 thus far, have rated it very highly.

I use the phone for taking quick snaps of my kids as I never seem to have my Nikon handy when I need it. To this end, although it may not match the quality of my stand-alone camera, it is fairly close in quality and far preferablte to a weak 2MP photo (although I confess that I have not printed any yet). Further, I will be plugging the phone into my car stereo, once I have a larger memory card (at least 100 albums in my pocket at all times without having to carry an MP3 player around).

Lastly, I am not as bothered about posing with my phone as some and have ordered a silicone cover for it which will protect it and overcome the fingerprint issues at the same time.

As for the price...well I would never spend £300+ plus on a phone, which is why I get them on contract (I'd rather have a new laptop!)

Although it's appeal was not instantaneous, I really am growing to like the K850 and would recommend it. You never know, I may even use it to call people!!!

I hope this was a useful and informative change to the usual SE vs Nokia nonsense.

              All the best
              A

Yeah I thought so as well, too many children around though!

Anyway, after the problems I'm having with the "Operation failed" message that appears when trying to send a text message, I tried to run up to the nearest o2 outlet to try and swap it over! Apparently though I can't do that because the phone itself came from the website (which they ordered it from inside the shop) so I need to post it off to o2 returns, I have a feeling this will take a while to resolve... Is anyone else having the same problem yet? I know of at least 4 people who have had it...

It's obvious that you're a nokia fanboy. They have other forums. Thats a great "story" about actually owning the phone too. It's nice how you snuck in the n82 release as well. The k850i is a great phone. And despite IMO its dissapointing camera, its still a better snapper than other 5mp camera phones. With new firmware the camera will reach its full potential. The k800i didn't produce near the image quality it does now upon its release. And we all know how the k800/n73 camera battle turned out in the end. K800 is still considered one of the best there is. My friend beat his n73 to death than ran over it with his car several times in a rage from it constantly freezing and crashing. He had to write down a girls # cause his n73 kept freezing when he tried to enter the #. Only thing you got on this phone is the qvga recording. Thats it! Stop hating!

Iv'e had an N91, MOTO rokr E6, N95, N93 and now the K850i and i don't know why it gets such a slating. ok i paid £300, £20 less than the N95 at the time and its fine, lovely phone and i love the little touches, which make it look classy, whereas thr N95 was just a simple, boring S60 interface

                        I went from a N95 to N93, say much?

SE bigest mistake! I will wait to see their next phone, anyway there's the Nokia N82 coming out soon, that will kill this uggly shame!

                          K850:

                          -Expensive
-same K800 pic quality but bigger!
                          -Video recording QVGA, horrible
                          -Lack of features
                          -Small 2.2 screen
                          -Thick
                          -Fingerprint everywhere......

I just sold my K850 on eBay after only 4 days of use...I lost $225 for this crap!

Come SE you can build better cell phone.

                            to ms Algenon;
the ratings were biased.it's the people who rated the phone. apparently they're all SE fans. in not a fan of any brand, im a fan of good quality, beautifully crafted mobile fon with practical features n reasonable price. SE lacks the last part.

                                Algenon, to answer your questions:
                                1. There are stupid Sony Ericsson fanboys who give a high rating pointlessly.
                                2. It's sad but true: the K850i is disappointing! No wonder Nokia fans can find excuses to slag off Sony Ericsson phones!

OK, I bought this phone on the day it came out on the o2 website. It's a brilliant phone, does everything you want except after about 2/3 weeks of use, I now can't seem to send, look at or manage anything to do with text messages, when i select my inbox I get a message saying "operation failed". My friend who has this phone has also had the same problem, seems the only way to resolve it is by sending the phone back and getting a new one, which is annoying to say the least! *Unhappy*
