The P1i uses Symbian 9.2 with the UIQ 3.1 interface.UIQ 3.1,which has enough development efforts from firmware and software developers.

Sony Ericsson did not include a full QWERTY keyboard on the P1i, but instead put all the letters and numbers in 20 keys. While such a keyboard layout saves space, it takes some getting used to.

Tapping the screen with the stylus is the best way to navigate the menus, naturally, but one-handed operation is not as convenient as other competing OSes.

The 3.2-megapixel camera produces good images for a mobile phone.

Even with multiple applications running in the background, I felt very little slowdown in the device.

A full charge of the 1,120mAh battery lasted us about 2.5 days. This included some Web browsing using both wireless LAN and 3G aside from normal phone use like calls and text messaging. Voice calls came through clearly.

Buttom line is the P1i feature-packed for business users.

              ToKent
UIQ (formerly known as User Interface Quartz) by UIQ Technology is a software platform based upon Symbian OS. Essentially this is a graphical user interface layer that provides additional components to the core OS, to enable the development of feature-rich mobile phones that are open to expanded capabilities through third-party applications.

Native applications can be written in C++ using the Symbian/UIQ SDK. All UIQ-based phones (2.x and 3.x) also support Java applications.

Version 2.0 and 2.1 are pen-based and used in the following 2.5G and 3G smartphones: Sony Ericsson P800/P900/P910, BenQ P30/P31 and Arima U300/U308, Nokia 6708, Motorola A920/A925/A1000/M1000.

UIQ phones employ touch screens with a resolution of 208×320 pixels (UIQ 1.x & 2.x) and 240×320 (UIQ 3.x). Depending on the phone, the color depth is 12-bit (4096 colors), 16-bit (65536 colors), or 18-bit (262144 colors) on some newer phones.

UIQ 3.1 is the first Non-Touch screen based version of the platform and also support one handed operation and a number of significant enhancements.

UIQ 3.2 is the latest iteration of the platform and which enhances Java API including the MSA profile being mandated as well as a richer messaging suite with MMS Postcard, IM Client OMA IMPS 1.2, push E-mail and support for sharing media for Web Browser. The new version still uses the v3.1 SDK

I am with the 3 network and was wondering if I get a P1 if I can still use the planet 3 stuff and skype or wether the network services will be limited, I have looked online and can't find anyone who has tried it, anyone here know.

also I have been told the WiFi is not great, can somone advise a noob if it has problems connecting or if it is just that the P1 is slower/has a smaller range than other WiFi handsets.

Thanks for any help on this.

                          To Agelos:

Thanks for enlightening me with regards to what UIQ means. I have a few more questions about it though: Hope you could help me.

                          1. You said UIQ is an operating system (OS) right? isnt symbian an OS too in itself?

                          2. Does this mean P1 has 2 operating systems?

                          3. Is UIQ standard in all PDA phones? Or did SE come up with the first handset with UIQ?

                          4. Why is it that other non-PDA phones can install programs? DOes it mean that it has UIQ too?

                          5. Lastly, what does the word UIQ stand for?

                          Thanks in advance!

UIQ is an operating system that allows you to install programs while symbian run them!So a phone with symbian and UIQ is more stable!
If your phone only had symbian(like Nokia) it would be more unstable(crashes all the time)! ! !
