Please note that the W200 can play MIDI files - the problem is that the WALKMAN application does not play MIDI files, rather the File Manager plays MIDI files only. So, we can say that W200 plays MIDI files.

        Robin,
Thanks for the midi site! ;)

        raq,
In the manual, they state "The walkman player is an all in one music and video player. The following file types are supported: MP3, MP4, 3GP, AAC, AMR, MIDI, IMY, EMY and WAV (16 kHz maximum sample rate). You can also use streamed files that are 3GPP compatible."

So, does the walkman play MIDI's or doesn't it? I'm confused.

                    Hi.
I was just browsing the manual and, on page 21, they say "do not hold the phone to your ear while waiting. When a call connects, the phone gives a loud signal." How loud is this signal?
My C65 has such a signal, but it's relatively quiet. My siemens M35 had a very loud signal and it was a pain, specially when I was trying to call someone in a quiet environment.

About the radio. Is it really necessary to plug the handsfree that serves as an antena for it to work or will it work without antena, but with a very bad reception?

                              Hi 5ushi.
                              Thanks for the great reply!

This not being able to play MIDI files sucks a bit. I have some MIDIs that sound great and take up a fraction of the bytes an mp3 would. oh well... you can't have everything. I guess I'll play MIDIs like I do it with my C65 -> ringtone selection, play.. at the end of the music, change and play again.

I was trying to find the phone's manual online, but couldn't. Can anyone post a link to a PDF with it, please?

I just got it yesterday. Yes, screen is crappy. But its cool enough,
27 internal memory + 128 M2 in the box is enough to store about 20 songs. Java support is also good and stable, I have my operamini, gmail and ebuddy installed.

                                  For Pedro,
CSTN and UBC are considered to have the basic same quality screen. However, when looking at high colour images, CSTN will do relatively worse than UBC, but apart from that the 2 are almost the same.

Under normal use, the joystick will last you about 2 years, and more if you take care (by using fine paint brush and cleaning dust out once a month etc...)

The clicking sounds are not to much of a disturbance when listening through the speaker, but may become irritating when listeing through the handsfree... The hissing is very frustrating when using speaker, and is also quite noticable when using handsfree. SE has WALKMAN phones that have the same hissing problem, and for those phones, SE has confirmed that it WILL NOT be fixing these problems... Not sure with W200...

Battery will have a relatively good life if you give it a good start-up charge (as mentioned in previous texts). After that, it will last you generally about 3-4 days under average use, and 2-3 days with heavy WALKMAN use.

If someone calls and battery goes dead, I should guess that it won't save the number, because it wasn't missed, rather the phone turned off while the call was incoming... (but this scenario is quite unlikely in any event...)

Low battery warning is loud - can disturb a meeting in my opinion.

T9 learns your habits, but I do find it irritating when it sometimes randomly selects words that I never used before.

I am not sure about the games and JAR. I believe that it is possible though.

Tha WALKMAN is a MP3 player - thus won't play MIDI files.

                                  Hope that helps

                                    For Shaniz,
It is not possible to lock your folders (with a password) on the W200, and on any SE phone (I think). You should try the PC version of the update, by downloading Sony Ericsson Update Service, and that should get you the latest update - if it says no update required, then you have the latest update already...
When you are viewing videos in WALKMAN, it is not possible to use full screen mode (hope SE will fix this in future). However, you can use fast foward and rewind in WALKMAN video mode but not in file manager (non-fullscreen) video mode. The above features don't work in full screen mode (hope to see this fixed in next update...)

                                      Hi all.
I'm thinking of updating my Siemens C65 to this beauty of modern technology.
                                      But I have some doubts...
Some say the screen is crappy... I'm used to the 65k colors of a CSTN screen and I use it with about 10% illumination to save battery and, well, it's enough for indoors and it's irrelevant outdoors! So I shouldn't expect W200's screen to be so bad.
One main feature is the handsfree function. The siemens's is great. People don't know that I'm using the set in handsfree mode unless I stand more than 1 meter away from the phone. Since the main idea is to use it while driving, holding it with a thumb, should work unless the speaker gets covered . Does all sound come from that speaker? and if you cover the holes, will it be (relatively) silent?

The joystick is my main concern and the reason why I'm sending the siemens to the cemetery. How good is it?
The C65 one lasted me 3 years. I should expect about the same from this one... Am I being unrealistic?

The camera will be a great upgrade for me... considering I rarely used it, I should expect the same for this! ;)

The walkman feature sounds great, but these clicking sounds and noise in low volume music are also making me scratch my head... are they that severe? Do they occur in all phones or just some?

Alarms and organizer stuff look similar to C65's except that there no world map to adjust the time zone, however, there's the auto time zone which should take care of it.

And then, battery. I read some people saying that it doesn't last that long. The siemens guys said the battery would last for some 6h talk time and 250h standby time. With regular use (mostly standby) I can still get some 4 days out of it - a 3 year old battery. If the SE guys state that their battery lasts for 300h in standby. That's a 20% increase. So I should get it to last some 6 days (while new). Am I being too optimistic, guys?

                                      Some other practical stuff:
                                      - if someone calls you and the battery goes dead before you answer the phone, does that record get stored or is it like siemens?... it's like it never happened...
                                      - low battery warning. Is it loud enough to be heard and quiet enough not to disturb a meeting?
                                      - sms T9. Does it learn your habits and put most common words first (I think nokias do this) or does it always show the same alternatives in the same order (like siemens)?
                                      - games. can I just copy jar files to the games folder and they are ready to run? my favorites are the classics tetris and video poker.
                                      - music. Can the walkman have MIDI files in the playlist?

I guess that's it. thanks for reading.
