@Nirodha, it is not the hiss itself that annoys me the most, but the way SE ignores its unhappy customers, who have trusted the SE WALKMAN brand, and now feel tricked as Sony Ericsson turned its back on them..!

This should not be the way you approach your customers. K-series phones don't have it as far as i know, so why can't this model be fixed? Just a firmware update for God's sake?!

Even if they don't consider a patch for some financial or whatever reason, they could treat their customers in a more professional manner, instead of ignoring these people and losing their trust for years. This has happened to w810 buyers, there is no reason it will not happen to buyers other SE products.

I don't want any other companies to treat me like this, so i will not encourage them supporting products of a company who pays no attention to its customers once after it has tricked them.

    Regards
    Murat

@Bobby: You make want to experiment with the bitrate settings also. I happen to use a custom setting of 88 Kbps for aac/m4a transcoding/encoding - this is just slightly under CD quality - and it works just fine for me.

I like using dBpowerAMP to do this because I can also normalize the volume to 100% prior to the encoding. :)

I am very glad that I have chosen this phone.
It's a great improvement on bringing phone and mp3 player together.
The sound quality is fantastic and even better with the additional MPS-60 portable speaker set. A great camera with autofocus. Truely a fabulous phone. Sony Ericsson is and will stay the best for me.

@Nirodha. Have used the IMtoo converter to convert to M4a which worked with the w810. Only problem is that the output file is huge..a 5MB mp3 file is converted to 8MB in M4a...which is quite huge and reduces carrying capacity of the phone. I have used the .aac before with a samsung E770 and i liked .aac coz a 7MB file could easily be converted to a file as small as 1.5MB but with negligible difference in audio quality. Any more ideas?

I've had my w810 for some time now. I have to say it's the best phone/mp3/camera unit I've ever owned. Honestly! I understand that some people have a couple little issues with these phones. There is no perfect assembly line or manufacturer out there. It will eventually happen to some people that a bad unit gets in their hands. As a majority, this unit is flawless.

@Murat Not all w810i's suffer from this problem. I happen to have one that doesn't. I don't know what firmware your w810i has, but I'm using R4DB005 and don't have this problem.

Also, there are hacks that will fix the problem if one is willing to do them. Please goto http://forums.se-nse.net/index.php?act=idx

There is a serious hissing problem on W810i which SE just does not accept.

It is said to be introduced after a firmware update to fix a sound distortion and low volume problem. And they say with a blank face that they don't know about a hiss Walkman mode.

Such a shame for a big company like SE. They have crippled the product and they have ruined their prestige totally. At least for me that is. I will NEVER buy anything SE again, and will keep everyone i know from doing so.

I am switching to another manufacturer, and unless they actually do something about this issue other than denial, i, a loyal fan of Sony Ericsson, will not have sympathy against SE any longer.

If you still consider buying a w810, please just try the walkman player with earphones and a soft song with the volume set to one.

You will at least try and see if you can live with a WALKMAN with such a disturbingly low sound quality, after paying so much of your hard-earned money trusting the company name.

                              Regards

@Bobby: If you encode them in as mp4-aac wrapper that will take care of it. The extension will be *.m4a

I use Winamp's mp4 aac encoder or dBpowerAMP Music Converter as a front end for Nero Digital Audio (aac).

I find Nero - under dBpowerAMP - to be the best as it's most flexible in terms of varible bitrate encoding and less cpu intensive. It's available here: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm
