I was thinking of a model between the K750i
which I own and the bulky W900 which i was planning to change to when W810 popped up.

After reading the specs i was sad to see that
    810 is not a 3G phone

Further i am not sure of its video capabilities. K750i has video that tires the eyeballs with jumpy motion

W910 has TV quality video but alas no radio

Hello ! Sony Ericsson; please give smooth video capability with 3G in W810 before it is commercially launched. Trust me probably I would be the 1st guy to buy the phone..

        The difference is the:-
        - Design
        - Edge not UMTS
        - Colour
        - Internal Memory Smaller!

...Hey everyone...You can just call me Lenny, pronounce like Lennnnnyyyy! I hope we`ve done with that part finally, `cause there is so much confusion about that. Anyway I got this phone at my disposal and you know after a couple of days I sent a bunch of flowers to SonyEricsson company just as an excuse, because I`m not going to use this sluggish piece of plustic sh...t ever again. Compared to my previous Palm one Treo, the phone is simply incapable of doing anything sophisticated...excuse my language. This new phone that I exclusively received from one of CEO of the company, a friend of mine actually, worked OK for a couple of days, and then all of a sudden gave me a hard time...Oh, I don`t really have to go deep into this,...if you have any intention to go for it, first think twice and then if you`re still with it, please change your mind, because I don`t want you guys to make same mistakes I already did. So stupid of me. Happy new year and don`t miss my concert I`m going to give in my home place, NYC soon. Cheers.

              Striker,

Your last comment about UMTS/WCDMA and EDGE was just about what I said earlier. You're right that UMTS = 3G, where as EDGE is just enhanced 2G data transmission, mainly promoted by Nokia.

Eventually UMTS will be taking over most, if not all GSM networks, depending on how new technologies are developed to provide basic wireless mobile telephony for calls and text messaging, where as UMTS and HSDPA will be for more developed markets (ie. not the poorest countries) and to provide video calls and other more capacity demanding end-user services.

being the first walkman phone on earth, w800 must be well accepted. w800's release will determine the success of the succeding handsets in the walkman line up. SE gambled on a vibrant orange as the hallmark color of walkman phones and used it in w800. that color scheme alone elicited some negative feed backs. not putting a camera lens cover on w800 will only add to the negativity of the vibrant orange color (which will affect sales) SE doesnt like their premiere walkman phone to suffer that and be accepted coldly. So they made sure everything was right with w800 and placed a camera lens cover. But that was the first and is the last time a lens cover will be placed in a walkman phone. Lens cover wil be additional features of SE's imaging phones (the k series)

the 'fusion white' color (which was initially announced as an alternative color for w810) was dropped by Se. Its not stated anymore in SE homepage like what i saw the other day. w810 still looks good even if only in satin black. Finally the very much useful activity button is included in walkman phone. w810 is a really stylish, classy and funky phone. ;-)

What a sexy phone, it's got all the features you would wish for (a higher megapixel camera would have been even better, and a proper lens protector would be nice) but none the less, it's still sylish... the perfect upgrade from my K750i. I didn't like the overly orange colour scheme of the W800, but they have toned that down here to make a more stylish handset.

To all knocking the design saying its nothing new - this is called a corporate identity. Same reason a porsche looks like a porsche, a ferrari looks like a ferrari, and an SE phone looks like an SE phone.

The mobile industry is flooded with hundreds and hundreds of different designs (just like the motor industry), and if you're a manufacturer, you need yours to stand out and be instantly recognisable. Very little stands out more than Orange against black, and like many people have been saying, it looks like an SE phone. Mission accomplished by the designers then.

This may be "just another" SE phone but I think thats exactly what the designers had in mind. And the tweaks they have made to the W800 design have improved it 10-fold in my opinion.

Ah I didn't know that EDGE was still evolving, so does this mean we will always see both types of handset available as I was under the impression that eventually, UMTS would completely replace GSM

yes striker. you hit the nail with a jackhammer. what you said was absolutely right. except that UMTS will never fully take over from GSM, bcos EDGE technology will rapidly evolve unlike UMTS which will almost seem to remain static, until they are the same

                                    Ken2.5

Thanks for the links. Although what I will say about the comments I made about EDGE previously, is that I agree that it would be better if the networks and providers made the switch to UMTS, but they haven't. And many non-UMTS handsets are available - especially to buyers on a budget, and i was saying that EDGE is an advantage on a non-UMTS handset.

You appear to be saying that EDGE = 3G, which does confuse me as I understood that EDGE was a fast, enhanced version of the GSM system, which was faster than standard GPRS and which led up to the inception of UMTS: http://searchmobilecomputing.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid40_gci213691,00.html

My understanding was that 3G=UMTS. And that UMTS will be the eventual successor to GSM: http://www.iec.org/online/tutorials/umts/

So, in non-UMTS handsets (such as the W810), EDGE is a definite advantage as its faster than standard GPRS. If you look on the p990 forum I said yesterday in a reply to Ombewa that 3g (UMTS)is faster than EDGE - i'm aware of this - the specs of the Non-UMTS W810 show an EDGE transfer rate of 236.8kbps, whereas the UMTS P990 is 384kbps which is clearly better. So without UMTS, EDGE is the next best thing..

Am I making sense Ken, or is my understanding of it wrong in your opinion?

                                      San

I'd say that you'd be right there, it'd make no sense for it to be totally exposed, a small cheap plastic cover is just common sense I'm sure there'll be one. And the bulge that Ken2.5 spoke of earlier will go a long way in protecting the lens anyway (imagine the phone scraping lens side down on a rough surface - with the bulge there the lens would remain untouched - the only thing it'll really be vulnerable to is dust and pocket fluff (so long as theres no keys and coins in the same pocket)!

I think the W900 would be better...
This like a mix between W900 & w800 making a phone that is pretty much pointless.
If u have the money to buy it u should buy W900. :P
