It takes effort - labor and time to build a working 3g video calling framework, and sony would probably be focusing more on new-fangled tech like floating touch and transparent plastic. They've only recently really taken off with their current android lineup and weren't doing so well since the walkman phone (~w810) era. And their priority would be to grow and establish a large customer base. What do you think would be more attractive to a potential, new customer. Video calling or ultra-cool transparent plastic?? After all this time, it looks unlikely that they will look at introducing 3g calling, especially with newer internet technologies coming out, but you never know, maybe someone in their dev team might have some sense after all...

Actually, in many countries you pay about 12,5 Euros per month and you get unlimited voice and/or video calls for all the numbers that share that price plan.
That means the 12,5€ are the money you have to talk to other people whatever their carrier/service provider.

As far as Data Plans, you'll have to pay 5€ for a max of 100MB monthly (Vodafone).
That means that you haven't got any chance to make a video call AND still have the money to call your friends "outside" your price plan.

In fact, you end up with 7,5€ and 100MB to make video calls AND surf the Web for a whole month, and you can make all the video calls you wish to the same price plan, whilst to other phones/providers you'll pay 0,65€ per minute.

You can see that is is much more practical, much easier and less complicated and above all - it is MUCH cheaper to have 3G native video calls as we were used to have (in older Sony and in WM phones, for example) and still have in most HTC,LG and Samsung Android phones.

Sony has got nothing to loose if they introduce video calling in their phones.
If you prefer to install a 3rd party programme, or if it is cheaper to make them via WiFi, then fine.

I just wish all other consumers will have the chance to keep something that is very comfortable and affordable and that allows them to make video calls, to every 3g phone w. a front camera, wherever they are, to whoever they wish.
    No one will loose anything:
    It's actually a win-win situation.

Brian, 18 Mar 2012Just read @ Sony's Xperia Play Official Blog. Let's follow ... moreI don't understand, you say data plans are expensive. Yet without a data plan the networks will be charging you per mb for 3g video calls, rather than a set monthly cost of say £5 for like 500mb (£500. surely this is MUCH MUCH more expensive.

Just to vote FOR on the Video Calling poll.

I also wish I could keep on enjoying my "pre-paid" video calls as there still is a front camera available to do it.

Anyway, isn' that why front video cameras first appeareed on mobile phones?
To allow users to enjoy video calls, 'on the go', immediately, whenever and wherever they might be?

PG, 18 Mar 2012It's sad, really, that we 've purchased an Xperia Play, but... moreJust read @ Sony's Xperia Play Official Blog. Let's follow the example.

                                      Dear Sirs,
I would like to ask for native video calling in future OS updates.
Video calling – as we were used to having and still remains functional in other brands’ Android phones – just requires a software implementation.

Not everyone can afford data plans. Wi-Fi isn’t available everywhere and it is a costly “privilege” im many places.
Therefore, 3G “out-of-the-box” video calls as we used to enjoy in older Sony’s phones would be a great advantage for present and future users.

I am sure you realise how popular and common video calls are in many countries and how important it is to consumers to be able to place a video call anywhere, anytime, without further worries or needing to install 3rd party programmes.

Granting 3G “native” video calls to our phones would surely boost Sony’s sales… and not the opposite!

I do believe Sony ought to understand that REintroducing video calling on their phones will only benefit them.

It will mean higher sales/profits; more buyers and keeping/gaining happier customers who won’t consider buying or changing to another brand phone simply to regain something useful, cheap and comfortable that they’ve grown used to.

Thank you very much for your time and attention.
                                      Best Regards.

That is my case. I've stated it in Sony's Forum:
                                        http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/33775

That is the closest to Sony responsibles, I've thought of to make my voice heard.

I believe all Sony consumers who wish to have native video calling (again) should complain and express their views publically.

Sony ought to understand that REintroducing video calling on their phones will only benefit them.
