I have this phone for couple of months. This is a perfect phone for me! the touch is smooth and FIFA 12 graphics is stunning compared to a PSP. It lacks a FM radio and the front VGA camera is really awful, the pictures are blury compared to IPhone 4 front VGA camera. overall this is better than a iPhone 4.

I'm also wishing SONY will provide the Xperia line of phones with 3G native video calling!

They have got nothing to lose.

HTC, LG and Sansung have made it possible to place a video call to any phone without the need for extra programmes, data plans or Wi-Fi connections.
Why can't SONY do the same?

That would be the greatest improvement they can provide, with ICS coming up.
Video calls are useful, practical and are included in regular price plans.

Providing 3G video calls, SONY has the power to conquest a (even) larger market share and keep their customers satisfied and coming back for more.
            It's a win-win situation!

Just made a short Skype video call (about 30MB?) which cost me approx. 4,5USD!!!
                    It's absurd.
WIth my monthly phone payment plan (about 17USD per month) I get free unlimited voice ad video calls plus up to 2000 SMS.
I can't afford to pay this kind of extra "fee"!
When I used my old k800i, I called my family (which had a cheap V630i) via VDF everyday: I placed - at least - 2 video calls each weekend and I "only" paid the monthly price. No extra payments were required.
And none of us had to install any extra software. I just phoned my family as I would in a "normal" voice call. That was it.
                    Why has Android gone back?
Won't Xperia phones receive software to allow regular 3G video calls as HTC or Samsung phones still do?
I hope so, as I am the one who has the latest phone model and the only one who can't make video calls... Sad, really.

I agree with the general trend. This is a fun phone, ready to play that only misses a bit more of internal memory available to install more and heavier games and
                        native video calls.
Ity's awkward to miss out on something that we were used to having for free, anywhere and everywhere, withou any hasskes and that now... it's simply gone!
Other than that, it's good value for money.
Of course, taking it for a spin before buying it is ALWAYS a good idea.
Everyone should be able to afford the phone that meets their individual needs.

AnonD-43102, 07 Mar 2012Does MessengerWithU, Skype and WhatsApp applications from t... moreYes. If both phones have GMail or Skype installed and you have a data plan OR WiFi available, you can make a voice call.

The problem for many users is that, on the street, inside transports, in a shop, on every street, we were used to be able to place a video call just dialing like a regular call (no extra software, or WiFi, or Data connection needed).

In fact, my family still has old V series Sony phones and I still own my former phone(an HTC) and we could/still can make video calls whenever and wherever we want to.
It is just like making a voice call and we dodn't have to pay extra for it.

With the Xperia Play, I can still only afford to pay my regular price plan - which does NOT include data - and I miss video calls, also because my relatives still haven't got any 3rd party applications to have video calls (they actually don't need them!) and WiFi is not available everywhere.
Which means that whenever I think I'll need to show them something (making a video call) I end up leaving my XPlay at home and taking along my older (Cheaper) phone that did have "native 3G" video calling!?!

You've got to admit... That's sad!

Does MessengerWithU, Skype and WhatsApp applications from the Android market work on this phone.? And if Skype works can we use the both cameras to make video calls.?

Great Phone! Only thing that wants me to drop it is its hardware abilities will be easily shadowed in the coming months especially with the new Xperia S Playstation certified device but no built-in "Keypad" that my Xperia PLAY has.

Xperia PLAY is the ONLY (as of 03.07.2012) modern smartphone with a real gaming keypad. It's cool to have people turn their eyes after seeing your phone instantly turn into a gaming console like a PSP Go.

Too bad it doesn't really play PSP Games. PSone, GBA, SNES emulators work well on it.

This phone does not have wifi capabilities so I have to use my prepaid plan to connect to skype.. So I guess with Xperia PLAY even if you don't have wifi it would work coz it would use your phone's network provider's plan or whatever you call it..
