chris, 17 Feb 2009This goes 4 the people that curently use this phone.
Does ... moreHi Chris,
Yes, X1 does have handwriting recognition and it works fine. It's the standard Winmo feature.
I dont understand what you mean by 'real GPS'. Yes, it does have GPS. However, you do not get any navigation software pre-installed on it. You can install TomTom (which is what I did, and it works fine). Or you can try WayFinder (You get a month's free trial). I think you can get some sort of navigation on Google Maps too using the built-in GPS, but you wont get voice commands.
The battery is rated at 1500mAH. That's the highest I've seen in any mobile phone. But I'm not sure how much of wifi and camera you use per day. I'm assuming wifi is not kept on all day... 'coz if you did that on the X1, I think it wont take too long to drain the battery completely. But otherwise, I find it adequate. I do a lot of txt'ing and emailing and listening to the radio while at work, so mine lasts only a day. If I use it only for voice calls for an hour each day, I think it'll last for 4 days.
Anyway, it's a good idea to keep a car charger or a spare mains charger at work. Maybe smartphone manufacturers should include two chargers in their retail pack :-)

Thor, 17 Feb 2009well the facts still show pro2 has much bigger screen(couse... moreYes, I would give you that - just 7mm extra width on this widescreen display actually does add quite a bit in terms of area. 34sq.cm compared to the existing 24sq.cm. That's about 40% more.
The angular X1 or the curvy TP2? This is your choice to make.

Ray UK, 17 Feb 2009Thor,
Agreed that the Touch Pro 2 is the same thickness ... morewell the facts still show pro2 has much bigger screen(couse screen size you notice the space in mm^2), so only 7mm wider screen giver 50% more screen space. So i say a little bigger phone, for much bigger screen.
And before you bash me, i am thinking again of buying X1, not pro2. Will be abaut a week when i make final decision. Couse i agreen wih you it depend on user, somone wan't bigger screen with bigger phonw, and some want it smaller.
I much prefer wider screen like E90, so you have 4" screen which is muuuch wider than 3.6" of pro2, even though it is only little bigger. So i can see more web page.
But wm only support 16:10 and not wider...
The thing is in almost all tasks screen size doesn't matter, but it doen in browsing.
Quite hard chic for me actualy, but see X1 is square, while pro2 is quite oval, so actualy pro2 mihgh yust be less bulky, to have in pocket. I realy don't want it to look like now with E90 in my pcket, which is 21mm thoc, so X1/pro2 are only 4mm thinnerr... I realy must find someone with X1 finaly and put it in pocket, hell i am used to walk without any bags oround, so i must have it in pocket. Imagine me with E90 in disco :P, but noone realy notices if they on't look closely, so i still cal Nokia E90 pockatable :P
If pro2 had any new feature from X1, i would w8 it, but now it has even worsa camera, realy if it had like nvoidoia APX 2500 procesor inside i would buy it without a thought.
But i am not some rich kid that has every mobile, i but it every 2 years, so i rely hate how nvidia tegra just hasn't arived yet....

This goes 4 the people that curently use this phone.
Does the x1 recognise hand writing, for example when u text a sms instead of using the digits write the words down on the touch screen with the stilus. I ve seen this feature on an older model of SE.
Does it have a real gps feature, or u have to pay like when using nokia maps?
And one other thing, tell me about the battery. I currently use nokia N95 8G, but if u use wi fi, camera and u speak about 1, 1 and 1/2 hour per charge, it will not last more than 2 days. I would like to leave the charger at home from time to time when i go out 4 a few days.
Thanx in advance.

Thor, 17 Feb 2009lool, haven't you time to look touch pro 2 specs before you... moreThor,
Agreed that the Touch Pro 2 is the same thickness as X1, but where did you find that the length is the same? X1 is 110mm where as the TP2 is 116mm. So it's 6mm longer. I did check out the specs before I wrote my previous comment. Did you?
And as you say it's 7mm wider.
Now, do you remember the Pythogoras Theorem from early school years? Do your math before you post your comments. May you've forgotten basic mathematics, so lemme just tell you this... a 16x9 widescreen 3" screen will have a width of about 37mm, and that of a 3.6" widescreen display will be 44mm. So that's 7mm - the difference between the width of the X1 and the TP2. So what's the big deal? TP2 has a put in bigger screen in a chasis that is wider & longer than the X1's.
So as I suggested before, why dont you wait for a 5" display on a 70mm wide phone?
Or if you prefer a 3.4" screen on a phone smaller than X1, take my other suggestion... design your own phone - 'coz the poor people at SE are not capable enough. Maybe you are!
Bottomline - I think the X1 is an excellent device. Different people have different reasons for not liking it. But your's seems the most ridiculous and unjustified 'coz on one hand you'd like 3.4" screen on a phone smaller than X1, but u're still happy to carry around a heavier device that is 6mm longer & 7mm wider than the X1. Seems like you're just trying to find excuses not to buy the X1, for whatever reasons (Maybe it's a case of "sour grapes"). Anyway, do yourself a favour - Dont buy it. I dont own SE, in fact I dont even have their stocks. So I dont really care.

What do YOU personally think about the X1? Would you recommend it to a man or women? And have you hade any problems with your X1?
Thanks,
LYNETTE
Hi Lynette,
You already have a quick response to your query from Tasha. Now, are you ready for my detailed opinion...
I have to admit that there are shortcomings in X1 (just like there are on any other phone). But while it's not perfect (and I guess no phone can be), it is, in my opinion, the best overall package (at least for me)
You have to bear in mind that any particular phone can not be the most suited, the best phone for everyone out there. Otherwise, you'll only see that model of the phone in all shops, no other :-)
My point is that everyone has different reasons to buy a phone - different features, looks, cost, ease of use. The iPhone 3G is supposed to be one of the best smartphones today. But there are problems with it too like you cant cut-paste text and I think you cant have multiple apps running at the same time (which is strange to me, but that's what I read somewhere). Also I write emails and sms quite a bit, so the lack of a hardware keyboard was an issue - in fact the main issue. I liked the specs on the Samsung Omnia and checked it at a store before getting the X1, just to try out the on-screen keyboard, but I wasn't impressed. Otherwise the Omnia was a good choice with it's bigger screen and good built-in memory. Actually, I wasn't too keen on getting the X1 before, thinking that with a slide-open qwerty keyboard, it's gonna be very big. But at the store, I found how wrong I was. The X1 is more compact than my previous P1i, it's actually about the same size as a Nokia N82, and only slightly bigger than the K800i. And my silver version looks very posh and suave :-)
Regarding the ease of use, again iPhone is supposed to be quite good. Nokia phones using Symbian S60 are not bad either. My wife has the Nokia N82 which is a great phone - good features esp the camera with xenon flash. But she feels quite lost when trying to use my X1. I have to admit, Winmo isn't all that user friendly. But the panels on X1 make it somewhat finger friendly and easy to use (for common tasks).
Continuing on the ease of use - If you wanted to do something quickly without sliding open the hardware keyboard, you would feel that the standard Winmo on-screen keyboard is quite small, so you'd have to use the stylus. But I installed the Resco keyboard and that's solved the issue. It's very nice and responsive, and has bigger keys that can be used with fingers (much like iPhone's). Of course I prefer the hardware keyboard if I'm writing a long-ish sms/email.
Now, about problems I've had with my X1. Only one really. Soon after getting my X1, I installed the TouchFlo 3D interface (which is the standard interface on HTC Touch Diamond and some other recent HTC phones). While I quite liked the interface, it made my phone really unstable. It would hang every now and then, and I couldn't use the power button to switch it off. Only way was to take out the battery or press the microswitch to reset (which was also hidden under the back cover). So anyway, after a few days of trial, I removed the TF3D and all was well again. I did install another version of TF3D after a few weeks (Thanks to Indra to point me to the 'good' files), and now this panel works fine. If you dont wanna mess around too much, I'd recommend you stay with the standard panels that SE provides on the X1 or the other officially supported ones that you can download from their website - like SPB Mobile, Facebook, etc. I also installed PointUI Home 2 last weekend, and that's a nice one too - good speed and touch response.
So to sum up... If you've had some experience with Winmo (or Windows Pocket PC), either on a smartphone or on a PDA - and found it alright... you'll definitely like the X1. If this will be your first time using Winmo/PPC, maybe it'll be a good idea to play around a little bit at a store (better even if some friend has the X1) before you decide to buy one. But on the flip side, if you're not scared of technology and dont mind experimenting to learn your ways on this Winmo device, go for it.
Hope this helps

Ray UK, 16 Feb 2009So Thor, you want a 3.6" screen on your mobile? Alright! Bu... morelool, haven't you time to look touch pro 2 specs before you comment. X1 has too much space left on all side of the screen. Look at the size of touch pro2, same thikkness as x1, same lenght, only 7 mm wider! Touch pro 1 is thicker than 2.
So hell yeah i want 3.6" on a phone as big as xperia, w8 that is touch pro2! Finely, they made phpne whose almost all size is used for the screen.
They could put 3.2-3.3" on X1, but with 7mm bigger width and no optical yostick, you get 3.6" on touch pro 2.
Actualy i would prefer phpnhe with somethoing like 3.4" and a little smaller than x1, it is personal choice there.
But hey, i got nokie E90 now, everything i buy will be smalle than that monster!! :P
