No, without rooting, you can have only Eclair (2.1).
But i have a custom ROM 2.3.5 and it's working a lot better than Sonys 2.1. It has also better battery life.

this phone is good but better to go for d xperia mini pro than x10 mini pro.. coz d latter does not hav a front facing camera and will not get 2.3 update so better 2 go for xperia mini pro,even if it costs a lil more..

archie, 31 Aug 2011can sum1 plz... tell me... is dis cell phone has a long bat... moreBattery life is an issue. I knew that when I bought the phone, though. It's an excellent phone, though. It is what it is. I wanted a small smartphone, easy to slip into my pocket and less vulnerable to damage than a big one. I send many texts and emails, and didn't want to type with a touchscreen, so the mini keyboard sold me the phone. Plus the 5mp camera, which is good, not excellent. I spent another £20 and bought a separate battery charger, and carry a spare battery with me (£5) which has solved the battery life problem for me. 4 stars. Hope this helps.
