I just contacted the ACCC about Sony's battery capacity claims. They need to hear complaints from multiple people, to determine that it's not a one-off issue. I therefore urge Australian users with battery issues to call the ACCC on 1300-302-502 to lodge a complaint. (I also mentioned this website, so "hi" to the new ACCC visitors)

In other news, my replacement handset is now behaving like the first... lasting less than 2 days on standby. But I don't think I could tolerate stuffing around with virginmobile again to get it looked at :/

I've had this phone for a week and it's already started playing up - the sound died then came back again a few hours later.
Also the battery only lasts for about 2 1/2 days with no calls. I wonder if that's grounds for a replacement or if it's "normal"...?
Other than this the picture is bad, even compared to ther low-end phones. What a dud.

No you can't lock features like that. You can lock the whole phone so it needs a code when you start it up, but thats about the extent of this phone, or any other sony ericsson phone's security features.

Does anyone know anything about the security features on the phone? Like if you can lock certain areas of the phone such as messages, phonebook etc. I'm considering buying one and I'm curious about that feature.

                  Hi Bear76
I just posted my phone back to Virgin, together with a letter of complaint to Sony about their misleading/false advertising. I will post here if i do receive a response. Im ticked off because i was going to buy the nokia 5070 instead, but noticed the nokia only had 3.5 hours talk time, compared to sony's 7hrs. I think the bottom line is that the z310i would be a good phone for the price, if it wasnt for the battery issue. And if the battery is so crap and its brand new, imagine how much worse it will get over time.

Hi tAU. I bought the phone for the style/design factor, and it had just the right mix of features for me. The battery life was a consideration, but not the deciding factor.

I've reached the pessimistic conclusion (based on comments here) that the handset/battery performance will be average at best, and the real problem is with SE's false advertising claims :(

I really don't mind having to charge the phone every other day. What bothers me is being misled to expect better performance. Sony should just change their website and marketing material, in my opinion

Good luck with your replacement :)

Oops i need to amend my previous message to say:
" I bought this phone because it was advertised as having one of the longest lasting batteries for a phone in that price range currently on the market."

bear76 thanks for the update. That is disappointing that Virgin took so long to replace your phone. I will be very angry if they dont replace mine.
I still think 3 days on standby is not good enough. I bought this phone because it was advertised as having one of the longest lasting batteries for a phone on the market. Up to 300 hrs standby and 7hrs talktime. I dont even get a quarter of that amount. Seems like there are alot of bad z310i's out there, and I hope Sony does something about it. Its a pity because this does look like a nice phone.

Just a few more comments regarding the battery life:

I rang the Sony Ericsson repair centre. The guy told me that the problems may be caused by a dodgy battery, or by a flaw in the software causing a battery drain. From my own testing, I concluded that mine was handset/software issue. The battery and charger were fine, but there was something in my phone that was depleting the battery.

When I sent my phone back to Virgin Australia, they replaced the battery with a cheap lower capacity battery, and "upgraded" the software by removing the battery status indicator. After a lot of yelling, and talking to Consumer Affairs, they finally replaced my phone :P

The new handset allows me to actually *use* the phone without draining the battery. It will now last a few days between charging with moderate use (including games, WAP browsing etc). I'd suggest to anyone experiencing bad battery issues to request a replacement from their retailer. I'm also looking at buying a spare battery from ebay as an emergency backup :)

Sorry for the late reply. Virgin took 9 weeks to replace my handset >:(

The new phone now charges to 100%. The battery still doesn't last as long as I expected, but I now get 3 days on standby (twice what I orginally was getting). I'm happy enough with that.

Apart from the initial issues, I'm really happy with it. It's a really nice phone for the price - good looking, easy to use, and has a great feel to it

Hi I wrote previously about the problems with my battery. Well Virgn (the company i bought it from) have agreed for me to return the phone, and they will send it to Sony Ericsson for testing. This will take up to 14 days, so i will write back then to let you all know what the outcome is. My battery only lasts 2-3 days on standby, and much less if i make the occasional call. This is not acceptable considering that Sony have been advertising this phone as having a very good battery (up to 300hrs standby). I would be happy if my phone lasted for even half that time!

Hi apart from the low life on the battery I think the phone is great. I was wondering who we contact to discuss the battery issues? Is there an alternate battery that suits this phone and has a longer life? Its very annoying to put it on charge everyday!!
