I think that's what Apple did before (slowing the phone down on purpose). Otherwise in general, it's good to reset the phone once in a while, because the storage gets fragmented as time goes by.

That's shocking isn't it. So, long updates are just a marketing ploy to entice you with buying their phones. For the uninitiated they won't know that. But for us who are familiar we won't get tempted by it.
