You kill your smartphone by yourself. Regardless of whether you do updates or not, in three to four years you can no longer use your smartphone. This is so wanted by the manufacturers and you can't do anything about it...

RingDing, 01 Dec 2024You dont need any Updates. I think I do. That is very stupid to say.
You see in my opinion these updates by companies are a double-edged sword. And poses many questions. How fast will the updates be? Like for example Xiaomi and OnePlus have started pushing Android 15 on their devices whereas Samsung still be "early next year".
Also, Realistically will you be using a phone for more than five years? And if so, i do not think future updates will run smoothly on a 5-7 year old device. And there will be update fragmentation i.e. some features may not be available on much older devices. It's good to have updates. But for me 3 years of OS and 4 years of security is the very basic I would be expecting.

Xiaomi on the other hand is the same with slow updates (even if its a flagship like the 14) and the presence of a separate app store, bloatware and ads/
Pixel also has it's fair share of issues like overheating (leading to poorer performance and battery life), display issues and so on.

If you need flagship performance in a relatively compact device for a more reasonable price, you might want to consider Sony Xperia 1 V or Pixel 8 Pro or even Xiaomi 14.

Naturally, Moto's Edge 50 Neo will charge way faster.
I'd only choose the Mark VI over Neo if you need/want the following three features: SD card support, wired headphones/headset support (without an adapter), and front-facing speakers.
Otherwise, Neo is a better choice in terms of price vs performance & feature set.

I'm interested with this Moto Edge 50 Neo phone until i've seen this.
The Xperia 10 vi comes to mind and has some advantages over the Moto in particular it's compact size (easier to grip), far better glass protection (Gorilla Glass Victus), somewhat better chipset (Snapdragon 6 Gen 1), faster UFS storage (3.1), support for aptX HD & Adaptive and a higher battery capacity overall.
Another thing to add is Motorola seems to silently insert apps (albeit a lack of an actual app store) asking you to install unlike the Sony's.
The reviews here states inconsistencies with the Edge 50 Neo's cameras (focusing, noise level, HDR, etc.), the camera app itself is laggy and the typical Motorola photo processing is frustratingly slow. Photo quality is another discussion as well.
If we focus on the issues I have raised does the Sony sound a more compelling choice?

This may be a daft question, looking into the future - as a prediction : if the Xperia 5 v doesn't get android 15 or 16 upgrades - if I were to get an Xperia 10 vi when it has Android 16 upgrade available - would the 10 Vi's chipset actually be able to handle Android 16 properly?
